1. (a) Define free body diagram, Transmissibility of a force and resultant of a force.
(b) Two identical rollers, each of weight 100 N, are supported by an inclined plane and a vertical wall as shown
in Figure1. Assuming smooth surfaces, find the reactions induced at the points of support A, B and C.

2. (a) Define the following:


i. Friction
ii. Angle of friction
iii. Limiting friction
iv. Cone of friction
(b) A ladder 5 m long and of 250 N weight is placed against a vertical wall in a position where its inclination
to the vertical is 300 . A man weighing 800 N climbs the ladder. At what position will he induce slipping?
The co-efficient of friction for both the contact surfaces of the ladder viz. with the wall and the floor is 0.2.

3. (a) Define the terms pertaining to belt drives : Creep, Slip and initial tension.
(b) A shaft which rotates at a constant speed of 150 r.p.m is connected by belting to a parallel shaft 720mm
apart which has to run at 60,80 and 100 r.p.m. The smallest pulley on the driver shafts is 40mm in radius.
Determine the remaining radii of the two stepped pulleys for
i. A crossed belt and
ii. An open belt. [6+10]
4. (a) From the first principles determine product of inertia for right angle triangle of base ‘ b’ and altitude ‘ h’.
(b) State and prove transfer formula for product of inertia. [8+8]
5. A cylinder of diameter 500 mm and height 1200 mm has mass density of 8000 kg/m3 . Find out the mass moment
of inertia of the cylinder
(a) with respect to the axis of the cylinder and
(b) about a line which coincides with an end face of the cylinder and passing through the centre of this face.

6. Determine the mass moment of inertia of a thin equilateral triangular plate of mass ‘m’ and thickness ‘t’ about
the axis perpendicular to the plane of the plate and passing through the mass center. Base width= ‘b’ and height
of vertex above base= ‘h’. Density of material is ‘w’. [16]
7. (a) Define mass moment of inertia and explain Transfer formula for mass moment of inertia.
(b) Derive the expression for the moment of inertia of a homogeneous sphere of radius ‘r’ and mass density ‘w’
with reference to its diameter. [8+8]
8. A weight of 10N attached to a spring oscillates at a frequency of 60 oscillations per minute. If the maximum
amplitude is 30mm, find the tension induced in the spring. Also find the spring constant and the maximum
velocity in the spring. [16]

1. (a) Explain various force systems with neat sketches.


(b) A roller of radius r = 0.3 m and weight Q = 2000 N is to be pulled over a curb of height h = 0.15 m.by
a horizontal force P applied to the end of a string woundaround the circumference of the roller. Find the
magnitude of P required to start the roller over the curb. [6+10]

2. (a) Explain the types of friction with examples.


(b) Two equal bodies A and B of weight ‘W’ each are placed on a rough inclined plane. The bodies are connected
by a light string. If µA = 1/2 and µB = 1/3, show that the bodies will be both on the point of motion
when the plane is inclined at tan−1 (5/12). [6+10]
3. A shaft which rotates at a constant speed of 160 r.p.m is connected by belting to a parallel shaft 1800mm a part,
which has to run at 60, 80 and 100 r.p.m. the smallest pulley on the driver shafts is 150mm in radius. Determine
the remaining radii of the two stepped pulleys for
(a) A crossed belt
(b) An open belt.
Neglect belt thickness and slip form. [16]

6. (a) An airplane is flying horizontally with a velocity of 450 km/hr at an altitude of 1960 m towards a target on
the ground which is to be bombed. Estimate where the bomb must be released in order to hit the target
and the time of travel of the bomb. What is the velocity with which the bomb will hit the target? Also
find the angle made by the line of sight of the pilot when the bomb is released.
(b) The acceleration of a particle is defined by the relation a =kt-4. Knowing that v=4m/s when t=2sec and
v= 1m/s when t=1 sec, determine the constant ‘k’. Write the equations of motion when x=0 at t=3secs.

7. A rectangular parallelopiped has the following dimensions.
Length along x-axis = ‘l’
Height along y-axis = ‘a’
Breadth along z-axis = ‘b’
Density of the material is ‘w’
Determine the mass moment of inertia of the parallelopiped about the centroidal axes. [16]
8. A weight of 10N attached to a spring oscillates at a frequency of 60 oscillations per minute. If the maximum
amplitude is 30mm, find the tension induced in the spring. Also find the spring constant and the maximum

1. Find the reactions Ra and Rb induced at the supports A and B of the right angle bar ACB supported as shown
in Figure1 and subjected to a vertical load P applied at the mid-point of AC. [16]

2. (a) Explain the principles of operation of a screw-jack with a neat sketch.


(b) Outside diameter of a square threaded spindle of a screw Jack is 40 mm. The screw pitch is 10 mm. If the
coefficient of friction between the screw and the nut is 0.15, neglecting friction between the nut and collar,
determine
i. Force required to be applied at the screw to raise a load of 2000N
ii. The efficiency of screw jack
iii. Force required to be applied at pitch radius to lower the same load of 2000 N and
iv. Efficiency while lowering the load
v. What should be the pitch for the maximum efficiency of the screw? and
vi. what should be the value of the maximum efficiency? [6+10]
3. (a) Derive an expression for length of an open belt in standard form.
(b) A belt is running over a pulley of diameter 1200 mm at 200 r.p.m. The angle of contact is 1650 and
coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley is 0.3 If the maximum tension in the belt is 3000 N, find
the power transmitted by the belt. [6+10]
4. An open belt running over two pulleys 1500 mm and 1000 mm diameters connects two parallel shafts 48000 mm
apart. The initial tension in the belt when stationary is 3000N. If the smaller pulley is rotating at 600 r.p.m
and coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley is 0.3. Determine the power transmitted taking centrifugal
tension into account. The mass of belt is given as 0.6703 kg/m length.

5. (a) Define mass moment of inertia and explain Transfer formula for mass moment of inertia.
(b) Derive the expression for the moment of inertia of a homogeneous sphere of radius ‘r’ and mass density ‘w’
with reference to its diameter. [8+8]
6. (a) A baloon is ascending with a velocity of 20m/s above a lake. A stone is dropped to fall from the balloon
and the sound of the splash is heard 6 seconds later. Find the height of the balloon when the stone was
dropped. Velocity of sound is 340 m/s.
(b) The acceleration of a particle in rectilinear motion is defined by the relation a = 25 − 4s2 where ‘a’ is
expressed in m/sec2 and ‘s’ is position coordinate in metres. The particle starts with no initial velocity at
the position s = 0. Determine
i. the velocity when s = 3metres
ii. the position where the velocity is again zero
iii. the position where the velocity is maximum. [8+8]
7. Determine the mass moment of inertia of a thin equilateral triangular plate of mass ‘m’ and thickness ‘t’ about
the axis perpendicular to the plane of the plate and passing through the mass center. Base width= ‘b’ and height

8. A vertical shaft 100mm in diameter and 1m in length has its end fixed to the ceiling. At the other end, it carries
a disc of mass 500kg having a radius of gyration of 450mm. The modulus of rigidity for the material of shaft is
80Gpa. Determine the frequency of torsional vibrations. [16]

1. A bar AB hinged to the foundation at A and supported by a strut CD is subjected to a horizontal 50 kN load
at B, as shown in Figure1. Determine the nature and magnitude of the force in the strut and also the reaction
at A. [16]

3. (a) Distinguish between cone pulley and loose & fast pulley drive.
(b) A shaft rotating at 200 r.p.m drives another shaft at 300 r.p.m and transmits 6KW through a belt, the belt
is 100mm wide and 10mm thick. The distance between the shafts is 4000mm the smaller pulley is 500mm
in diameter calculate the stress in,
i. Open - belt and
ii. Crossed belt. Take µ = 0.3. Neglect centrifugal tension. [6+10]
4. An open belt drive connects two pulleys 1200mm and 500mm diameter on parallel shafts 4000mm apart. The
belt weigh 9N/m length and maximum tension in it is not to exceed 2000N. The coefficient of friction is 0.3. The
1200mm pulley, which is the driver runs at 200r.p.m Due to belt slip on one of the pulleys, the velocity of the
driven shafts is only 450 r.p.m Calculate the torque on each of the two shafts, the power transmitted and power
lost in friction. What is the efficiency of the drive.

5. A cylinder of diameter 400mm and height 1000mm rests vertically. Over this, a cone of base diameter 400mm
and height 500mm is placed such that the axis of the cone coincides with the axis of the cylinder. Find out the
mass moment of inertia of this composite solid about a line which passes through the vertex of the cone and
which is parallel to the base of the cylinder if the mass density is 4000kg/m3 .

6. An enemy ship was located at a distance of 25km in north-west direction by a warship. If the enemy ship is
moving with a velocity of 18kmph N300 E, in which direction the warship must move with a velocity of 36 kmph,
to strike at its earliest. Assume the fire range of warship is 5km. When is the shell to be fired? [16]
7. (a) Prove that the mass moment of inertia of a right circular cone of base radius ‘R’ and height ‘h’, with respect
to a diameter of the base is M (3R2 + 2h2 )/20 where M is the mass of the cone.
(b) Calculate the mass moment of inertia of a circular cone of base radius 300mm and height 600mm about a
line which passes through the mass centre of the cone and which is parallel to the base of the cone. The
mass density of the cone is 2500 kg/m3 . [8+8]
8. (a) A weight of W = 10 KN, with cross sectional area of 1800 mm2 , is attached to a spring of spring constant
0.1 KN/mm, is oscillated in water. Find the period of oscillation.
(b) A connecting rod AB makes 40 small oscillations per minute about a knife edge through the hole at the end
A. The distance of C.G. from ‘A’ is 0.45m. Find the radius of gyration of the rod about the axis through
‘G’ parallel to the knife edge. Also find the number of oscillations per minute which the rod will make if
supported on a knife edge through the hole at ‘B’ if AB =1.5m. [8+8]
