Cause and Effect

A cause is what makes something happens. To find the cause, you need to ask yourself , What happened first?. An effect is what happens because of something else (the cause). To find the effect, you need to ask yourself, What happened second?.

The boy was grounded because he wasnt on green at school.

There are signal words that will help you to identify the two parts of a cause/ effect relationship. The most common signal words are: because, if, when, so, then.

In the sentence above, the word because signals a cause-effect relationship.

Example 1 : 1. It got dark (effect) because the sun went down (cause). 2. My sister was scared of the mouse (cause), so she yelled for help (effect). 3. The dog dug a hole (effect) so it could bury his bone (cause). 4. Mark was tired (cause), so he fell asleep in class (effect). 5. If you study hard (cause), you will pass the test (effect). 6. When the light said, Walk (cause), the man crossed the street (effect). 7. The boy was surprised (effect) when the rocker began to move (cause).

8. My mum was hot, (cause) so she turned on the fan (effect). 9. The player was angry (cause) so he jumped on the referee (effect). 10. When the wolf left (cause), the pig popped his head out of the can (effect).

Example 2 : Effectively managing stress lessens its overall impact on your health, well-being and relationships.
