e r g i n g the High level talks aimed at m American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA) and the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), though termed preliminary by spokesmen from each side, took place recently in a two-hour meeting at NADA's McLean, Va., headquarters. The NADA forces were rewsented by Executive Vice Resident F& ~ c ~ a ntwo h ~ NADA , dealer directors and another NADA staff member. AIADA brought Resident Robert McEIwaine, Chairman Lee G. Seidman and anAlADA dealw duector. "The talks are in the embryonic stages." said AIADA's Seidman. "We have an interest, but we aren't pushing it." Ron Tonkii, NADA first vice president and the man many say has the inside line to the presidency in 1989, feels that a merger of the two groups would be a g o d tbiog as the difference between import and domestic dealers has emded. "We are just plain and simple dealers now," he said. While the Thundehird's exterior is rermnisfent of a BMW 6-series done properly and the Cougar's is a sleek and pleasing version of what once was an awkward shape, the interiors look like a cheapskate Tempo job. The front ends arc sleek, headlights shallow, hwd lines low, windshields raked, waistline lower, glass flush. 'lhese elements are blended into cars that are 3.4 inches shorter (at 198.7 inches) but with 113-inch wheelbases nearly nine inches longer than their predecessors. This does wonders for interior room,and for the fust time the twodoor is a proper five-seater.

The marathon race, originally billed as the 24 Hours of Chicago, was shortened to 12 hours. but retained some of the Satthe atmosphere with its old-style driver's sprint to the start. How did they accomplish that? By placing the cars on the start line and having the drivers run from the street comer outside Lhc racewayaontmllers in handto the track. 'There was a $200 prize for the f m t lap leader. The LcMans dash, it happens, wasn't to the swiftest, but the smanest. Clylh Van Buggenhoul of Brazil knew he couldn't outsprint the field so he ouunaneuvered them
by taping his controller o his fingers. While the others tried to clip controllers to connectors. he was $200 richer. And his shrewdness paid off as he was the overall winner as well. Racer's tape works no matter the series in which it appears. Other similarities with full-size formula racing included course conml. with s m e gically placed "marshals." responsible for untangling the comer pile-ups and scrutineering-ver the racer's nemesis. In the Group 12 Coupes de Benelux race, t h m cars were penalized for rules infractions: one car was t w low and two were t w wide. And a driver had better watch his language. Lap penalties can be handed out for swearing. Hot tempers keep some drivers from completing a single lap! Many of the 22 races were non-invitational, including the event for non-pmfessional racers which offered a (full-size) 1988 Pontiac Fiero as first prize. Unlike Amcrican races, the World Finals are "invitation only." Several imponant American racers, including three-time World Champion Paul Pfeiffer, P.A. Watson and Jan Lasler, stayed home in protest. But it didn't seem to matter as the Americans continued their winning streak-six victories in seven championships-when Mike Swiss, racing for the Stu Koford team, proved to be tw tough for the competition. Big news nut year is the W I , the v12q h d mupe which will replace the venerable 6-saies.Originally expected to be called the &series, thinking now is that BMW will continue with its &names. It has an aggressive, wscle-cnr look that c a w some disquiet among h p t r i s t s but aims to amaa U.S.buycrs. Designed to fight both 928% and SfXSEC. it probably also will be made evenndy as a convutibk. The top engine will be a 350 hp fourvalves-per-cylinder version of the 5.0-liter V12 from the 7-series. Lesser engines will include a two-valve V12 (300 hp) and 3.0liter and 3.5-liter sixes. The full-house model will have ekcuonically controlled shock absorbvs which raise the tail, lower nose at speed, and limit cornering roll, plus lots of other wizardry. The new 3-series, still the car on which BMW's bealth depends, comes out in 1990. With styling very much in the vein estab lished by he 5-series and 7-series, it will offer much more interior room and bener aerodynamics, but with sleekness and elegance. Munich's job in the meantime is to maintain interest in the existing 3-series. Plans include a cheaper, stripped 3251 (though that might simply hun the costlier

Two new models are due by '91. The fmt is the SL. due for launch (and expon) during 1989, and the second is the S-class sedan. l k SL is--like all new Benzes-evolutionary in styling. PaFked with equipment and plushness, it will use the full range of c m t V8s and a six or two at the bottom end. Gadgets naturally include ABS, elecmnic traction conml and one of M e d e s ' various tram control devices A V12 version is possible, although nci for a while. Having had to hear the burden of hearing superlatives heaped on BMW's 7-series, Mercedes intends to make the new Sclass a great car. The premium edition will have a 6.0liter V12 with 350 hp (a 5.2-liter V12 with 320-330 hp is also likely) and engine choices will reach down through the V8 range to a 3.0-liter six in the most basic versions. Wheelbase, but not the car, will be longer than ever. The drag coefficient is said to go below 0.30. Equipment will include double-pane windows that darken in bright light. The idea is to kill heat and noise in a car which will have a bigger glass area than most. Top models will get a development of the air suspension in current models. There's also talk of a six-speed automatic transmission. electronically controlled. and of an active four-whee-steering system to be introduced a year or two after launch.

A four-seat threedoor, reminiscent of the first Giugiarodesigned Scirocco but drawn entirely within VW's Wolfsburg works, bows in Europe at this fall's Birmingham show and will debut here soon after. The first versions will have a 2.0-liter four making 150 hp with the aid of VW's G-lader supercharger. in 1990, the Corrado will be first to use the RV6. a narrow-angle V6 of 2.4 and 2.8 liters, with four valves per cylinder and outp t s of around 170 and 190 hp. It is thought that the Conado will use only the smaller engine; the bigger will be used for the Passat. VW's big sedan. Late lhis year VW will show the Golf Syncro GT. a precursor of the all-new Golf for 1992. It will have the 2.0-liter G-lader engine and VW's 4wd system to deal with the car's 150 hp on slippery surfaces.
