In addition to CO2, sulfur is also an issue. Sulfur removal is crucial because it also poisons catalysts during petroleum refining processes. The new regulations will likely limit S to low ppm (almost zero) levels in fuels. We previously reported synthesis of unsupported nano-phase MoS2 catalysts using sonolysis (Mahajan et al., Appl. Catal. A: General 258, 83-91 (2004)). We are now further investigating this reaction. The sonolysis of Mo(CO)6, slurried in hexadecane, at ~50oC produced Mo nano particles in >90% yield in 35 hours. The resultant MoS2 was characterized for particle size, shape and crystalline structure using SEM, XRD and Computed Microtomography (CMT) techniques. The EDAX elemental analysis of product confirmed the presence of Mo, S, C and trace O in variable concentrations. The XRD pattern shows broad lines. The Computed Microtomography (CMT) technique was used, for the first time, to show 2-D and 3-D images of the material. Both techniques are consistent with the presence of a nanophase material. 1 2 1
