Course Description:
Comp I teaches students to write effectively at the college level and to apply critical analysis in response to readings and student writings. This course will emphasize the purposes for writing and writing as a process. It will require students to write exploratory, expository, and persuasive essays in various steps of planning, revising, and editing. This course will be conducted with lectures, discussion, group work, and workshops in order to provide students with a number of approaches to and methods of writing.

Goals and Outcomes for ENC 1101


Students should be able to: write essays that demonstrate an understanding of the importance of audience and purpose; write out-of-class essays that emphasize the process of writing, including inventing, sustaining, revising, and editing their writing, that leads to effective final written products; write essays that demonstrate basic writing skills: a focused thesis or central idea, unity throughout the essay, coherence between paragraphs and ideas and within the essay as a whole, strong development that supports the thesis, and skill over mechanics; write essays that demonstrate appropriate grammar, mechanics, punctuation, and spelling, and accurate citation and documentation of research using the MLA style; write in-class essays that emphasize the ability to respond to an assignment within a timed framework; analyze texts in order to discern the thesis, the method of development, and the strength of the evidence; evaluate the effectiveness of various rhetorical strategies as applied in different contexts and from different perspectives; build on their critical reading abilities through composing clear and effective summaries of and critical responses to texts from different disciplines; use technology in effective communication, including the use of word processing to develop outof-class essays, e-mail to communicate, and the Internet and database resources for developing research skills.

Assignments and grading:


Over the course of the semester, four essays in a variety of styles and topics will be written and revised. All drafts and final copies of the essays must be typed and double-spaced, and adhere to the MLA format which we will discuss in class. In addition to these essays, there will be assignments and activities that will include responses to reading assignments, online activities, or prewriting for essays. Finally, there will be occasional quizzes on the reading and lectures, group work, speeches, presentations, and in-class writing assignments. Letter grades are based on the following scale. Note, however, that plus and minuses will also be used. ***Students must maintain a 73% minimum average in the course in order to pass it. Receiving a final grade of less than 73% requires retaking the course.*** 93-100% = A 83-92% = B 73-82% = C 62-72% = D 62% and below= F Some assignments and activities will receive a check, check plus, or check minus grade; credit is given for having the assignment completed and submitted on time. Class Policies and Procedures


1. Attendance is required. Missing class detracts from participation grade. Think of class like job training: it is essential to show up for training, even for a job at Taco Bell. Any assignments not turned in due to an absence will receive a zero. Any quizzes, graded activities, or other in-class assignments missed due to an absence may not be made up. Please note that missing six classes will cause you to automatically fail the course. This is a standard policy for the Composition courses here at FGCU. If ongoing health problems, work, family, or other issues prevent class attendance, withdrawing from the course is strongly recommended.

Students must come to class on time. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of class, and those who are late will be marked tardy. Those who are more than ten minutes late will be marked absent. Three tardies will equal one absence. Laptops and cell phones are prohibited in class. Cell phones must be put away out of sight. Any cell phone use of any kind in class, as well as any web surfing, will result in immediate dismissal and a zero for the day. Second offenses will result in a zero for the day and a referral to Student Judicial. Any activities missed will also receive a zero. Take bathroom breaks before or after class, not during class. All assignments must be turned in on the day and time they are due.

Assignments turned in after the class period they are due are lowered a full letter grade each day late after that point. Essays that show no or little revision will receive an F. No extensions on assignments will be given. Please make note of due dates and refer to the course schedule often. As assignments begin immediately, you must acquire textbooks during the first week of class. The Computer Crashed is not a valid excuse for missing assignments. It is the students responsibility to save assignments in multiple places (flash drive, emailed to yourself, etc) to avoid losing them. Keep in mind that waiting until the last minute to print a paper is not a good idea. Participate in class discussion. Not only will class be more interesting if you get involved in discussion, but your level of participation can raise or lower your final grade by a full letter. Courtesy and conduct. Students are expected to conduct themselves courteously. The classroom is a place for open discussions and the free exchange of ideas, but please show consideration for the opinions and feelings of others. Refrain from eating, texting, and otherwise distracting others during class. Please reserve all questions or comments about grades received until after class. It is unfair to the rest of the class when one person's questions about their own work takes away from instruction time. Outbursts, temper tantrums, angry comments, on confrontation will result in immediate dismissal from class and a zero for the day, followed by a referral to Student Judicial. Email or other communication should be professional and courteous. Rude and/or disrespectful communication in any form will result in a referral to Student Judicial. Academic Behavior Standards and Academic Dishonesty All students are expected to demonstrate honesty in their academic pursuits. The university policies regarding issues of honesty can be found in the FGCU Student Guidebook under the Student Code of Conduct and Policies and Procedures sections. Plagiarism- To plagiarize is to present someone else's ideas or work as ones own. Plagiarism results in an F for the assignment or for the entire course, based on the circumstances involved and my discretion. Credit should be given to the source in the following instances: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. When directly quoting someone else. When using someone else's ideas or opinions unless they are common knowledge. When using someone else's examples. When using statistics or facts gathered by someone else. When presenting evidence or testimony taken from someone else's argument.

Neglecting to cite the source where the information was found both in text and on a Works Cited page is plagiarism. All assignments completed for Composition I must be original work that has not been previously submitted for another course.

No research or outside sources is to be used for ANY assignment in Composition I unless specifically instructed otherwise. Claims of submitting the wrong version of an assignment and/or failing to understand what plagiarism is not an acceptable excuse for plagiarism.

10. Individual responsibility: You are responsible for deciding whether or not to attend class, following directions, the quality of the work you turn in, and your performance in class. This includes taking initiative to look up information and seek to improve the quality of your work. As adults, you are free to do as you choose, but you will also have to face the consequences of your decisions. 11. Extra Assistance with Coursework: The FGCU Writing Center can help improve student writing skills, and no appointment is necessary. I am available for questions and feedback during my office 12. Grades: Grades are based solely on the quality of work submitted and whether the assignment guidelines were fulfilled. Low grades are a result of poor quality work or failure to follow directions and guidelines. While revising an essay can improve a grade, an essays grade can go down between drafts as well. Again: You are responsible for figuring out how to approach assignments, and to overcome your writing weaknesses. 13. Note Taking is required. All students are required to take daily notes in class, and must have all materials for note taking each day. 14. Papers and assignments must be stapled, and essays must be submitted in a folder with pockets. I do not have a stapler or any other office supplies.

How to Turn in an Essay for EN 101

Miscellaneous procedures:
Missing a Class There is no need to contact me and let me know you will not be in class If there is an essay or other assignment due, email it to me by the day and period it is due for credit. Then, bring a print copy to the next class session. Contact someone from class to find out what you missed and any assignments due for the next class.
