Community rallies for the history of Lenola
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
A community within a commu-
nity, Lenola is thought to be a sep-
arate municipality outside of
Moorestown an idea that council
members Victoria Napolitano and
Phil Garwood campaigned to fix.
A clear message we took from
that experience was that my
neighbors feel as I do that
Lenola has unfortunately been let
to fall by the wayside while other
areas of town have been the focus
of improvements over the years,
Napolitano, a Lenola resident,
said in an email.
She said some dont realize
Lenola is a part of Moorestown.
Even residents living in Lenola
have gotten used to saying they
are from Lenola versus
Moorestown.
But that doesnt stop the com-
munity members living in the
Lenola section from bringing the
roots and livelihood of Lenola
back into Moorestown. That was
Megan Booths intention when
she planned the Lenola Elemen-
tary School alumni picnic on Sun-
day, Aug. 4. The Lenola Elemen-
tary School was nestled on New
Albany Road across the street
from Jeff Young Memorial Park
until it closed in 1979. The build-
ing is still standing and is now a
nursing home.

Moorestown Board of Educa-
tion members considered can-
celling their application for grant
funds to help expand and main-
tain career and technical educa-
tion programs, but decided to
table the matter until the board
could look further into the use of
funding.
I am hesitant to give up on
money that we are receiving for
as long as we have been, board
member David Weinstein said,
adding the district has applied to
receive funding from the Carl D.
Perkins Career and Technical Ed-
ucation Improvement Act for 15
to 20 years.
The funding provides in-
creased focus on academic
achievement of career and tech-
nical education students,
strengthens the connections be-
tween secondary and postsec-
ondary education, and improves
state and local accountability,
according to the U.S. Department
of Education.
According to Moorestown
High School Principal Andrew
Seibel, the district receives
$20,000 in grant funds and must
renew the application every five
years. However, as advised by a
guidance advisor, some of the
monies used are not necessarily
intended for the purpose of the
Perkins grants. So we have been
given notice that we have to
change what we do.
This was not something we
considered lightly, Seibel said,
adding he understands why the
board is taking the time to review
the grant before making a final
decision.
The funds are used to maintain
and create curricular programs.
He said the high school is cur-
rently unable to expand pro-
grams due to the lack of staffing.
Proportionality speaking, the
amount of money that we get for
the amount of work we have to
put in is very uneven, Seibel

Lenola, currently living in
Moorestown, said she hopes to
see this event grow next year, at-
tracting people from all over
Moorestown.
Its always been like that.
Lenola tried to make its own
town. We had the fire house, the
school, but didnt have a post of-
fice, Booth said.
Her grandparents grew up in
Moorestown. Her grandmother
went to Lenola school in 1923 and
she still has her mothers kinder-
garten picture.
We have deep roots in Lenola.
My grandfather helped dig
Strawbridge Lake, she said. I
love being from Lenola. There is
no shame here.
She remembers Lenola as a
new neighborhood when she was
younger with a few unpaved
roads and six houses on her
street.
Every house had a kid, she
said.
Steve Levin, now a Voorhees
resident, went to Lenola school
from 1964 to 1966. He said the pic-
nic was a great way to bring the
community back together and
say hello to past classmates and
new friends.
He remembers the same in-
stances of Lenola being recog-
nized as a different community.
When I was in school, there
was the Lenola Little League
baseball team. I was not allowed
to try out for the Little League be-
cause my parents didnt think
that Lenola was a part of
Moorestown, he said, adding he
lived about two miles from the
school.
I think that it was a mindset
even when I was going to school
here. There was a mindset that
Lenola was not the same as
Moorestown. It was accepted by
every kid, Levin said.
Although Booth and Levin no
longer live in Lenola, its not un-
common for people who grew up
in the neighborhood to still be
there.
Ron Schwinn grew up in Leno-
la and now lives in the house his
parents once owned. He was the

rom Day 1 here at Elauwit, we
have yearned to expand the
sports content in the towns we
cover. The youth sports scene is one
that draws a lot of attention and inter-
est from players, parents and commu-
nity members alike, and we have al-
ways known that it was a key area of
coverage for us.
Starting with this weeks issue, we
are excited to announce that your
towns youth sports from Little
Leagues to youth soccer to high school
sports will receive the extra atten-
tion they deserve. Nick Cohen, our for-
mer associate editor for the towns of
Mt. Laurel, Shamong and Tabernacle,
will take the reins as our first-ever
sports reporter, responsible for cover-
ing every one of our towns.
This week, you will see extensive
fall sports previews for each of your
towns public high schools, including a
profile story and full season schedules
for each sport. We will have another
similar preview for the winter and
spring sports seasons in the upcoming
2013-2014 school year.
We are planning regular coverage of
high school sports throughout the sea-
sons, as well as profile stories and pho-
tos of youth sports. After all, high
school sports arent the only games in
town.
Finally, Nick is working on an exten-
sive, multi-part series on safety in
youth sports how it has changed and
its effects on youth sports, from the
professional level all the way down to
the local level. We expect the series to
begin sometime this fall.
If you are a coach, parent, player or
fan who has a story idea, photo or invi-
tation to cover an event, please contact
Nick directly.
While we are greatly increasing our
focus on sports coverage, we still need
your help to keep us in tune and up to
date with all the happenings through-
out town. Please continue to send in
your photos, game roundups and story
ideas. Your help can only make our
coverage even better.

Starting this week, expect a big push in sports coverage

State infringes
on right to bear arms
In the Aug. 7 issue of The Sun, you
make a thoughtful but uninformed argu-
ment in favor of New Jersey's draconian
anti-gun laws.
You state, there isn't much good that
can come from carrying a gun in public
and the law does not infringe a citizen's
right to bear arms. Let me address those
ideas one at a time.
What good comes from law-abiding citi-
zens walking around with concealed
weapons?
John Lott's landmark study of states
which adopted concealed carry laws found
that, in the first five years after adoption,
there was a 30 percent decrease in violent
crime, a 30 percent decrease in murders, a
10 percent decrease in rapes, a 16 percent
decrease in robberies and more (see the
plots on pages 78 and 79 of his book More
Guns Less Crime.)
You suggest that our state's laws don't
infringe upon our right to bear arms.
What does it mean to bear arms?
How was the right to bear arms exer-
cised when it was written into our consti-
tution?
People carried weapons about on the
streets and in the public square.
If the right to bear arms means some-
thing other than that, the restrictionists
need to prove it. Why was the right to bear
arms guaranteed in the first place, when
so many other rights were never written
into our constitution?
The answer is simple. The founders
wanted to protect the kind of rights that a
tyrannical government would want to take
away.
A tyrant would want to suppress free-
dom of speech, assembly, religion, the
press, the right to be armed and so on.
New Jersey's requirement that an appli-
cant for a carry permit show justifiable
need is judge-made laws. Your elected
representatives never voted for such a
thing.
What's more, just because, e.g., a store-
keeper happens to be carrying large
amounts of cash to the bank through a
dangerous neighborhood doesn't mean he
has a justifiable need.
The applicant has to show that he or
she is actually being threatened with bodi-
ly harm.
And by the time a private citizen gets
his request through our court system, that
bodily harm will have come his way.
The constitutional scholars can spin
their theories but where the rubber meets
the road, yes, this state does infringe upon
our right to bear.
For the record, the first draft of this let-
ter wasn't nearly so temperate.

Pedal With A Purpose
Spinathon Sept. 7
Make a difference in the lives of
children while getting great exer-
cise! The YMCA of Burlington
and Camden Counties, a cause-
driven non-profit charitable or-
ganization, will host the inaugu-
ral Pedal With A Purpose
Spinathon in partnership with Re-
constructive Orthopedics on Sat-
urday, Sept. 7 from 8 a.m. until
noon at the Mt. Laurel YMCA.
Proceeds from the four-hour
spinathon will provide children in
local communities with YMCA
Youth Scholarships and access to
programs that will have a lasting
impact helping them learn, grow
and thrive. In addition to Recon-
structive Orthopedics, the
Spinathon is sponsored by Ivy
Rehab.
Reconstructive Orthopedics
has been a member of this com-
munity for 36 years. We ap-
proached the YMCA with this
idea because we knew that their
mission to serve the community
not only in Burlington and Cam-
den counties but throughout all of
southern New Jersey is in align-
ment with ours and we are
thrilled to be partnering in this
worthy endeavor," said Robert
Greenleaf, M.D., spine surgeon
with Reconstructive Orthopedics.
Teams may consist of up to
eight members. The bike must be
occupied for the entire four-hour
event. Cyclists can ride in one or
two 15-minute increments. After a
maximum of 30 minutes on the
bike, the teammate must switch.
The event will feature a DJ and
cycling coach to motivate cyclists
to Pedal with a Purpose.
The teams must meet the mini-
mum fundraising entry fee of
$500, in addition to a $25 team reg-
istration fee. Friends, family and
supporters can donate money to
teams directly or send a Cheer-
Gram to be announced during the
Spinathon by a DJ for $25.
Participants have three ways to
register: online, in person with de-
posit and completed registration
form at the Mt. Laurel YMCA at
59 Centerton Road, Mt. Laurel, NJ
08054, or by phone by contacting
Jen Segelken at (856) 2346200
x243. For more information on the

or YMCA Youth Scholarships,

Save money and make money Very simple

Bringing the communities together
will take more than a picnic
designated barbecue cook at the
picnic and remembers the event-
ful times he had playing at Jeff
Young Park, hanging out at the
New Albany Road recreation cen-
ter and staying out all night play-
ing with friends.
He said he cant remember a
time when Lenola was known as
a part of Moorestown.
I never really saw it as being
that big of a difference,
Schwinn said.
According to Napolitano,
Lenola has its own character.
I dont know if its because
the houses are a little closer to-
gether than some to other parts
of town, or if its because so
many people have their roots
here, or if its something else, but
theres definitely neighborliness
in Lenola, Napolitano said.
Booth might say its because of
all three reasons.
When she was growing up, it
didnt matter who was around. If
an adult told you to do some-
thing, you listened. Comparing
the houses in Lenola to the
homes on the other side of town,
she said it loses the community
feel with the houses spaced so far
apart.
Trying to bring the two com-
munities back together is going
to take more than a yearly picnic.
But Booth believes the annual
event would attract more Moore-
stonians to see the other side of
Moorestown.
Napolitano said she and Gar-
wood decided to form the Lenola
Advisory Commission to fill in
the gaps that were created over
the years. With seven members
on the commission, including
lifelong Lenola resident Jamie
Boren, the commission is not an
official organization, yet its
simply a group of passionate
community members who are in-
terested in improving their
neighborhood, Napolitano said.
She said town council has also
agreed to hold future meetings at
the Lenola Fire Hall, before the
new Town Hall construction is
complete, making it easier for
area residents to get in touch
with elected officials.
I want to make changes that
improve the aesthetics of the
Lenola Town Center and ensure
that my neighbors know that
they are a valued part of our
community, she said.

BOE requests to meet without
mediator to settle contract
said.
We are trying to figure out
how to make it larger and more
productive. Its difficult to do that
from restrictions by the state,
said Carol Butler, the districts di-
rector of curriculum and instruc-
tion.
According to the states gradua-
tion requirements, students must
graduate with a minimum of 120
credits, a 10-credit increase from
the 2008-2009 school year. The
credit total is greater than the
sum of the individual require-
ments listed on the states mini-
mum requirement list to allow
students to take electives.
If the district continues to
apply for the grant in the current
situation, the funding could be de-
creased from year to year.
The only downside to can-
celling the grant is that additional
curricular programs would not be
created.
We still have the programs,
Seibel said. We have utilized the
money to develop some of the pro-
grams we have now. There is an
upside to keep adding if we could.
I think one of the things that
makes us a great high school is
that our students explore such a
variety of subject matter and do
not become overly focused in one
area, and because of that, it al-
lows them to become more suc-
cessful outside of high school.
The deadline to submit the ap-
plication for denial is Aug. 30.
Its a challenge. Its one that we
are willing to accept and take on,
if the board wants to continue to
apply for the grant, Seibel said.
In other news:
Although the BOE and teach-
ers union did not reach a contract
agreement at the Aug. 5 meeting,
BOE members have requested to
meet without a mediator in the
hopes to settle on a contract be-
fore the start of the school year.
The board is committed to ne-
gotiate a contract that is fair and
dedicated to provide a quality edu-
cation for students, vice president
Kathy Goldenberg said. The goal
is to try to reach an agreement
before the beginning of the school
year, which starts on Monday,
Sept. 9. Since there are only three
state mediators, the next available
date is Oct. 2. According to board
member Kevin OSullivan, negoti-
ations on Aug. 5 lasted six hours
and both sides moved a little on
salaries, but did not come to an
agreement.
Contract language, salaries and
health care are the main topics
setting the two sides apart, Gold-
enberg said.
No other comments were made
after the boards proposal to meet
on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
The next Moorestown Board of
Education meeting is on Monday,
Sept. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the media
room at William Allen Middle
School, 801 N. Stanwick Road.

Elizabeth Dunn Mutch
Aug. 15, 2013
Elizabeth Dunn Mutch, 88, died
peacefully on Aug. 15, after a
lengthy but determined battle
against congestive heart failure.
She is predeceased by her loving
husband of 52 years, Dr. John C.
Mutch. She is survived by her
brother and sister-in-law, Janet
and Howard Dunn, of Salem, N.J.;
children, Deborah Olander of
Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; Julia
Marie Mutch of Moorestown;
John C. Mutch Jr., of Nazareth,
Pa.; James Mutch of Moorestown;
and Andrew C. Mutch of Media,
Pa. She will be especially missed
by her 10 grandchildren and step-
grandchildren, to whom she was a
model of grace.
She was a longtime resident of
Moorestown, and Buck Hill Falls,
Pa., where she resided in summer
months. In recent years, she main-
tained a winter residence in Ponte
Vedra Beach, Fla., where she en-
joyed the combination of her
many interests and aptitudes, in-
cluding birds, duplicate bridge
and golf. She was oldest of three
children born to a Quaker family
in Palmyra. In her youth she
spent many happy days at her
familys Salem, cottage beside the
Delaware Bay. An extremely
bright student, she was a gradu-
ate of George School in Newtown,
Pa., at the age of 16. Following
graduation she pursued a nursing
degree first at Guilford College in
Greensboro, N.C., and later at Co-
lumbia Teachers College in Man-
hattan, N.Y. Her love of babies led
to a nursing position in the na-
tions first neonatal intensive care
unit, at Philadelphias Pennsylva-
nia Hospital, while she was con-
currently earning credits at the
University of Pennsylvania.
In the 1950s, through her dedi-
cated work in the groundbreaking
unit, she was featured on the
cover of Philadelphia Magazine.
While at Pennsylvania Hospi-
tal, she met her husband, who was
a physician in residence.
The couple was married in San
Antonio, Texas, prior to Dr.
Mutchs service in World War II,
and later as a MASH surgeon in
Korea.
Eventually settling in
Moorestown, where Dr. Mutch
opened a local medical practice,
she lovingly-raised a family of
five. She became a prominent and
active member of the community,
especially within the Moorestown
Monthly Meeting. She later devel-
oped a second career as a trusted
real estate broker with the firm,
Stockwell Knight Company.
Funeral service was held at
Moorestown Monthly Meeting,
118 E. Main St. in Moorestown, on
Monday, Aug. 19. Internment is
private. In lieu of flowers, dona-
tions can be made in her name to
the Moorestown Monthly Meet-
ing. Condolences may be left at

Keeping Your Grandchildren
Safe program Sept. 6
Keeping Your Grandchildren
Safe will be on Friday, Sept. 6,
from 2 to 4 p.m.
Presenter John Kriger said the
session is intended to assist
grandparents and nonparent
caretakers to better understand
the challenges and risks of behav-
ioral and substance abuse con-
fronting today's children and ado-
lescents.
Often grandparents are the pri-
mary caretakers of their grand-
children due to parental illness or
other circumstances rendering
the parents unable to be the pri-
mary caretakers.
Because of this it is often easy
for young people to take advan-
tage of this relationship without
the grandparents having any idea
of what is happening. In some
cases, the grown children are ac-
cessing their elder parents med-
ication.
Grandparents need to under-
stand the world of prescription
medication abuse, the impact of
over-the-counter substances and
the current availability of infor-
mation, predatory behavior and
the availability of a drug culture
on the Internet.
Attendees will discover how
the media and legitimate compa-
nies are putting our children at
risk.
Learn how the drug trade has
changed since you were in school;
and with it the climate and cul-
ture of drug distribution. See
how highly psychoactive sub-
stances are now being sold "legal-
ly" in convenience stores and gas
stations.
Uncover concrete steps you can
take today to minimize their risk
and increase your knowledge of
what many children already
know.
For more information, Kriger
can be contacted at (609) 387-5226
or john@krigerconsulting.com
