Abstract
This paper is a simplified model to explain how dowsing works, based on a plethora of experimental evidence. Although not yet totally accepted by main stream science, the mind is a conceptual entity existing in a quantum physics world between the brain and the structure of the universe. The mind and its interaction with the cosmos are paramount to understanding dowsing and associated phenomena. Coupled with this concept is that local and astronomical forces significantly affect the mind-cosmos relationship resulting in what is being perceived. This model of how dowsing works explains, in principle, most forms of dowsing and associated techniques.

Introduction
For thousands of years people have wondered how dowsing works. We are fortunate in living at a time when the answer is imminent: thanks in part to being in the Information Age, the appreciation of the importance of geometry in the structure of the cosmos, the ascendency of ancient Eastern philosophy, and after 100 years still not understanding the weird effects of quantum mechanics, science is beginning to accept the non-orthodox. This paper is a simplified model to explain how dowsing works, based on experimental evidence.

The Importance of Visualisation and Geometry

As is well known, it is not the rods or pendulums that produce the dowsing response; they only amplify the sensation. The mind and its interaction with the cosmos are paramount. Coupled with this concept is that local and astronomical forces significantly affect the mind-cosmos relationship resulting in what is being perceived. Dowsing pure geometrical shapes is a powerful technique in simplifying scientific research into dowsing. For example, the effects of gravity, magnetism, photons, spin, and orientation have been quantified experimentally. It has also been proven that these forces do not affect the dowser, only what is being dowsed. (References to the authors relevant published research are given at the end of this article together with an Appendix detailing specific examples). This model applies to all types of dowsing and associated techniques, such as information dowsing (including health, and searching for objects, minerals, or water), earth energies, map dowsing, dowsing photographs, archaeological dowsing, telepathy and remote viewing.

The Optical Model

The first step in some forms of dowsing requires seeing an image. For example, without visualising a map or photograph when map or remote dowsing, or the local topology when archaeological or earth energies dowsing, or when searching for minerals or objects, or investigating the colours and structure of a persons aura, it is

difficult to connect the dowsed perception to physical reality. Some aspects of consciousness and dowsing, therefore, involve vision. Stereo information is communicated via the eyes, retina, rods and cones, and along the optic nerve to the brain. A 3-dimensional optical model is created in the brain cells. It is important to stress that one does not see a physical image on a retina. These concepts are paramount later when explaining dowsing, reality, and perception. This conceptual input phase is depicted in Figure 1. Creating an Optical Model in the Brain

Via intent, the relevant optical model and associated information is transferred to the mind the greater brain which can link to the structure of the cosmos. This is depicted in Figure 2. The Brain, Intent, and the Mind

not via the eye. Examples include dowsing Earth Energy but not possessing the ability to see energy lines, or when Information Dowsing abstract concepts, or dowsing subtle energies, or visualising intent.

The Information Field

The conceptual logic of the next phase is shown in Figure 3. The mind transmits the intent and relevant information to the Information Field, which is postulated as part of the structure of the universe. For example, the dowsed object has a specific orientation, and may be immersed in local gravity, electromagnetism, or the earths spin on its axis or around the sun. Conceptually, for physical objects, communicating this information is easy as the relevant part of the Information Field is in the centre of, surrounds, and creates the dowsed subject. For dowsing intangibles, it seems that the information is communicated by standing waves to a relevant part of the Information Field. The Mind Communicates to the Information Field

Figure 3 The postulation is that dowsed information is sent down to the Planck level, which is the smallest level of physical and quantum reality. However, this mechanism is currently the great unknown, and is subject to much research. For example, there are at least 5 steps in the brain involved in producing speech, starting in an area of the brain dealing with initial non verbal thoughts. The author published in a BSD Earth Energy Group 2001 Newsletter detail of experiments showing that when dowsing auras of crystals, the back of the brain at forehead level was involved. Experiments by the author in January 2010 demonstrated that dowsing enables the communication of information across the solar system not only to be faster than the speed of light, but it is instantaneous. Some current suggestions as to the mechanism for the brain interacting with the Information Field, but currently without solid scientific evidence, include brain waves and Electrocorticography, or the involvement of the pineal or pituitary glands. As

communication speeds greater than the speed of light are involved, electromagnetic waves, limited to the speed of light, cannot be the entire story. The brain, like all matter in the universe, is made up from relevant constituents of the cosmos starting at the Planck level. Conceptually, the brains neuron system has both a macro and sub microscopic component giving access to the quantum world. This combination gives rise to consciousness. It is not possible, therefore, to completely distinguish between the mind, matter, and consciousness. Present developments suggest that the structure of space-time incorporates a holographic storage of information in at least 5-dimensions. Dowsing could involve these higher dimensions. Is Fractal Geometry involved in converting the brains macro visualised intent to micro quantum information? Could the Information Field even be involved with the brains initial non-verbal thoughts? There is obviously an opportunity for the BSD or Dowsing Research Group to initiate research with establishments having appropriate technology for brain scans, and using dowsers who are experts in pro-active information dowsing, telepathy, or remote dowsing. The brain may not be involved in, say, passive earth energy dowsing.

Download Information
The mind then accesses the Information Field, and downloads the relevant information possibly in a geometric form. The latter could incorporate a transformation of the source geometry into a version based on the structure of space time, plus the effects of local forces. This is illustrated in Figure 4, with some examples in the Appendix. Download Information to the Mind

Field is not always a 100% certainty. Dowsers may be better at different types of dowsing, with varying success rates, but practice can increase hit rates.

Dowsing Model
The brain having built a dowsing model of the received information, interprets it and superimposes it onto the brains optical model. For example, when archaeological dowsing or dowsing energy lines and using a measuring device, the mind needs to superimpose the perceived dowsed geometry on to a tape measure. This is illustrated conceptually in Figure 5. People perceive dowsed images slightly differently, which partially is explained by this personal superimposition process, together with the uncertainties of the quantum world. Conclusions
This model of how dowsing works explains, in principle, all forms of dowsing and associated techniques. It is compatible with a plethora of experimental evidence. The mind is a conceptual entity existing between the brain and the structure of the cosmos.
The latter is believed to comprise at least a 5-dimension, holographic, quantum universe that is based on information, geometry and fractals, ratios including harmonics, irrational numbers such as phi (), chaos theory, and yin-yang properties (e.g. male/female, positive/negative, dipoles, abstract/physical, matter/anti-matter, etc. Are these different manifestations of the same basic structure?). This mix, together with free-will and intent creates consciousness and dowsing.

APPENDIX
This paper is a simplified model to explain how dowsing works based on 1. The authors 25 years of relevant research. 2. About 40 published papers detailing the authors original experiments, some of which are listed in the Reference section following this Appendix. 3. Work undertaken by the Dowsing Research Group (DRG). 4. Inputs from the extensive Bibliography that follows this Appendix. Many experiments have contributed to the justification of the model described here. The following arbitrary examples have been selected as they not only give vivid visual explanations, but also illustrate the importance of dowsing geometry, and the effects on dowsing of local factors and astronomical forces such as earth energy lines, gravity, magnetism, photons, spin, and orientation. Dowsing geometry also enables the projection of known patterns and their sizes to remote locations where they can be detected and measured by other dowsers. Even if dowsing the auras of crystals geometry is important, as the shape of the aura is significantly affected by the shape of the source object and the micro-topology of its surface. Orientation A simple example of the importance of the orientation of an object being dowsed (and not the orientation of the dowser which is usually irrelevant) is illustrated in Figure 6, which is the shape of the aura of a circle or disc. The size and shape of the aura depends on the orientation and direction of the measurement. Aura maxima occur at 0, 135, and 270. i.e. north, south-east, and west. This suggests that the earths magnetic field extends auras towards the North Pole; the earths rotation on its axis from west to east extends auras to the west; whilst a Coriolis Effect could be the vector force causing the south-east maxima. Figure 6 Gravity One of many examples of the effects of gravity is dowsing a vertical cross, as in figure 7, where a strong horizontal beam emanates from the centre. If the cross is rotated slightly so the vertical line is no longer aligned with the gravitational force vector, this beam disappears.

Figure 7 Tetrahedral Geometry A shape incorporating universal angles such as those found in vesica pices and tetrahedral geometry (also known as Bobs Geometry in recognition of the discoverer Bob Sephton), is an excellent example of numerous cosmic factors affecting dowsing. The shape is shown in Figure 8. Bobs Geometry

Figure 8 When this shape is physical made, say, from wire, with the long axis pointing north, the very complex observed dowsed pattern (comprising vortices, lines and subtle energies) is shown in Figure 9. Dowsed Pattern on the Ground with Solid Source Geometry and N-S Orientation

This suggests that the earths magnetic field is involved, possibly together with the earths west to east spin. If the Figure 8 source is drawn on paper as an abstract shape, the pattern in Figure 9 becomes a mirror image. This suggests that the Information Field automatically stores abstract information differently from physical matter. If this shape is turned through 90 the dowsed pattern collapses dramatically as shown in Figure 10. This shows not just the involvement of the earths magnetic field and spin, but they are vital in creating the vortices and subtle energies, but not necessarily the lines. Many other experiments can be performed on this shape with artificial magnetism and changes in orientation, all giving a different dowsing response. This proves that the cosmos is part of and actually creates the local forces and astronomical factors being dowsed, not the dowser. The latter will obtain the same dowsing response wherever he is located. Because the dowsed pattern extends over tens of metres, the dowser can be far removed from the small source of only a few centimetres around which the experiments are being performed.
