Village approves labor contract with firefighters

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Menomonee Falls Village Board approved a contract Aug. 19 with the labor union that represents the village's fulltime firefighters. The board approved a contract with IAFF Local 3879 that will cover the years 2013 to 2015. The deal was ratified by the union Aug. 12. The agreement calls for a 1 percent increase retroactive to the the start of this year, 1.5 percent in 2014, and 2.5 percent in 2015. Village Manager Mark Fitzgerald said a fire lieutenant position will be created as a rank-and-file union position and the hours of work will be changed to a 24-hour schedule in which firefighters will work a three 24-hour shifts with 24 breaks in between followed by a four-day rest period. There will be an average of 56 hours per week, but there are eight off days placed into the schedule throughout the year, which will reduce the time to 53 hours on average per week. The other major change involves the union agreeing to be part of the normal, non-represented plan design for the village's health insurance. Fitzgerald said the union will pay the full cost of the employee share of the Wisconsin Retirement System, which is the same as what's in place for other employees. Fitzgerald noted that police and fire employees were exempted from the Act 10 which placed limits on what was subject to collective bargaining between government units and the labor unions representing their employees. Falls: Several key starters return

Menomonee Falls football heads into the coming with approximately 60 players on the varsity squad and 140 players in the entire program. With a new season there will be new players in key roles. Only two of 11 starters on defense return this year while six of the starters on offense return, including conference honorable mention quarterback Adam Vechart and conference second team running back Christian Almonte. Other players such as Jack DeWalt, Cody Marienthal and Jason Precia will play both offense and defense. While Menomonee Falls made it to the second round of the playoffs last season, Coach John Baker noted that every year is a new year. Were excited for the guys this year, theyre working really yard weve got great senior leadership, Baker said. Getting ready for the season involved time in the weight room with strength training. Baker noted the majority of players spent time with the off-season program. Baker cited the work of coaches Dan and Kyle Lutz for keeping players motivated with weight room work. By Thomas J. Germantown: Datka returns as assistant

The starting quarterback for Germantown returns for the Warhawks this season, while the coach working with quarterbacks is also very familiar with the program. Phil Datka, who served as Germantowns head coach for 42 seasons, will be an assistant coaching quarterbacks this season. Following his retirement as a head coach, Datka was an assistant at Brookfield Central. Its about time that he comes back to where he belongs, Coach Jake Davis said during a recent practice. There are approximately 58 players on the varsity squad, 38 players in junior varsity and 40 players at the freshmen level. Germantown has several returners on both offense and defense, including starting quarterback Dwayne Lawhorn while Clay Knapp, Hunter Higginbotham and Lincoln Gruber return on defense. Davis said there are familiar faces returning but there are also several positions that are being contested. Following last seasons second-round playoff loss to Arrowhead, Davis said players took a few weeks off before returning to the weight room to prepare for this season. In addition, players participated in seven-on-seven drills. Theyve doing a very nice job and its translating into success right now for us, Davis said. By Thomas J. Hamilton: New faces at key positions for Chargers

New faces will lead Hamilton into the new season, as the Chargers graduated several players that led the team to a second-round playoff appearance last year. We have some new faces, some guys are pretty young, some guys just lack experience, Hamilton Coach John Damato said during a recent practice. What they all have in common is they have great attitudes and theyre putting forth their best effort at this particular time. Its a learning process every day theyre getting a little better and thats all we can ask for. Damato said several starting positions are being contested and players know their roles. They know that every day they have to be accounted for and they need to be counted on to be the next man in, Damato said. Running back Drew Patterson and free safety Brett Buehler return, while Zach Gaatz and Andrew Poenitsch return on the offensive line. Damato said the team has had a tremendous offseason to get ready for the moment. The way that they prepared themselves, I couldnt ask for any more, Damato said. Now its just understanding our offense, understanding our defense, understanding their roles on the team and then finding their fit. Preseason training for the fans

Falls HS student section learn new cheers during fan boot camp
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR At Menomonee Falls High School, preseason training for fall sports included the fans, as the school hosted its inaugural boot camp for the student section Aug. 20. We want you to have fun, Athletic Director Ryan Anderson said at the start of the event. Anderson then said that the schools student section was reprimanded by the WIAA for the worst sportsmanship at the girls state volleyball tournament last fall. We can start fresh, Anderson said. He explained that many of the ideas he was putting forward came from the battle of the fans contest that is regularly held in Michigan. He later added that district parents compared Falls students to student sections in the Hamilton and Germantown districts. We dont fare very well compared to them because they are organized, they know what theyre doing. We just say, Hey Germantown, you (stink) thats all weve got, Anderson said. Its funny, but its not where we want to be for Menomonee Falls High School. After the event, Anderson said the reprimand by the WIAA at the state volleyball tournament was the first indication he received that the culture within the schools student section needed to be changed. Then during the basketball season, he observed the student sections of other schools and their cheers. He added that the schools coaches also did Youtube searches looking for new cheers. Fun is the bottom line, and respectable. I want our kids to be respected by our community (and) by our parents, Anderson said. I hear a lot from the community on what our parents are doing right and wrong, and I want to hear more right than wrong. During the boot camp Anderson then led off with the new cheers with the burgundy sea in which the yell leader waves the school flag back and forth with the student section waving their arms with the flag. The yell leader will then tap the flag pole on the ground twice and then go up into the stands to split the sea. Varsity girls volleyball Coach J.C. Bruns introduced the student section to a volleyball specific cheer for just after the opposing team hits the ball out of the bounds. In response, the school yell leader will yell Was it out? with Falls fans then responding by saying Way out. The yell leader will then say Was there a touch? with Falls fans saying No touch. The yell leader will then say Hows your hair? Purrrr-fect, the student section will say in response. Soccer Coach Scott Stein introduced the student section to the ole chant for soccer matches while girls cross country Coach Dave Gruber introduced the popcorn cheer in which the yell leader says pop the shot with members of the student section jumping up at random like popcorn. Other crowd responses included a yell leader throwing punches in the air with the student section moving in response and a bowling motion, with the student section moving back as if they were pins being knocked down. Anderson also introduced a few new initiatives that he hopes turns into new traditions. Singing the school theme song, chanting Go Falls Go to the Go Pack Go cadence at Green Bay Packers home games were among the new ideas, as is a dance off at halftimes of home games where three volunteers will dance to a song. Also, Anderson said that he wanted to institute a student line, in which the student section would form two lines for Menomonee Falls teams as they leave the football or soccer fields or basketball courts. That is one way to show your classmates that youre behind them win or lose, Anderson said. After the event Anderson recalled the line formed by the Appleton East fan section after East lost a playoff game at Menomonee Falls High School last fall. I thought it was incredible how they supported their kids after a huge loss and I want our kids to be there, Anderson said. He noted that in the past students werent allowed onto the field. That will change slightly as they will be allowed on the field or court as long as they are forming the two student lines. They see them in the classroom and I want them to support in the classroom, on the court, on the field, Anderson said. At the start of the event, the girls soccer team was also recognized for winning a conference title last spring while the softball team was recognized for a state tournament appearance.

After studying Ballet for seven years, she decided to settle on Latin American and Ballroom. As an amateur, Jacqui danced competitively in Europe for ten years seven of those as part of a Latin American Formation team, winning championships in several European countries. After coming to America in 1994, Jacqui decided to turn professional and teach. Certified in both American and International Styles, Jacqui also teaches Salsa and Merengue, and she was the first instructor to introduce "LaReuda" (Salsa wheel) to Milwaukee in 2001. Chilly Fest expansion in works Plans are in the works to make Chilly Fest and bigger event, Dawn Mariscal said in a report from the Village Centre Business Improvement District. The next Chilly Fest will be held from Feb. 7-9, 2014 and will increase from the one-day event which has been held for several years. In addition, Mariscal said there will be a strong music lineup and professional ice carving displays. There will be a professional and amateur chili contest and she said there will be "fun new apparel" that will be created for the event. Etc.: The Village Board approved an amendment to its comprehensive plan to provide a framework for conservation developments. Trustee Steve Raymonds explained that the village has been "stymied" as far as developing properties in areas that do not have sewer and water. Raymonds said that ordinance limited development to properties that were five acres or larger. The change will allow for development on three acres of land in addition to the conservation component. "It was long overdue," Newman said. McDonald's on Appleton Avenue has withdrawn a request to be open 24 hours, Newman said. The board approved a resolution exempting the village from the Waukesha County Library tax for 2013 and 2014. The tax is placed on communities that don't provide library services to their residents. The board approved a contract with Van Straten Construction Co. for the relaying of water main and service laterals on Megal Drive from Cherokee Drive to Tipp Street. The project includes trench restoration. The contract is for a total amount of $474,932.50, which is below the village estimate of $563,000. Trustee Jim Jeskewitz noted that 15 companies bid on the project. "There's a lot of people out there looking for work," he said. Jeskewitz noted there have been nine water main breaks in the last six years. The project will begin this fall. The Salvation Army store in the Colonial Plaza shopping center has closed, Mariscal said earlier in the meeting. The store will not relocate to different space in the mall, which had been under consideration.

The following report was taken from records at the Menomonee Falls Police Department. Drug possession Three Sussex men, ages 22, 22 and 26, were arrested for drug-related reasons at 8:07 p.m. Aug. 16 after contact with police in the W17000 block of White Oak Circle. The 26-year-old initially gave police a false name and was subsequently taken into custody on two warrants; one of the 22-year-olds was arrested for heroin possession and drug paraphernalia and was placed under an order to detain by the Department of Corrections; and the second 22-year-old was arrested after the DOC placed an order to detain on him. All three subjects admitted to using heroin earlier that evening. Operating while intoxicated A male subject was arrested for operating while intoxicated-second offense at 1:31 a.m. Aug. 19 following a traffic stop at SIlver Spring Drive and Williams Place. He was found to have a preliminary blood-alcohol level of .17. A female subject was arrested for operating while intoxicated-first offense at 2:18 a.m. Aug. 18 at Main Street and Highway 41. Police made contact with the woman after stopping to investigate a single-vehicle accident. The womans boyfriend was driving the car that crashed and the woman stopped her own vehicle to see if he was okay. Police spoke to her and determined that she was intoxicated.
