N.C.-After 17 years of being the "National Something" (it was the '4M)' for its first six years. lhen a 500miler). the 1977 fall race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway was the NAPA National 500 this year. The National Automotive Parts Association (NAPA) joined with CMS to announce the new sponsorship on theeve of this year's National 500 on Oct. 10. Making the announcement were Paul Rollins, vice president and general manager of NAPA; and Bruton Smith. chairman of the board of the Charlotte Motor Speedway. "This 1s NAPA's first step in a longterm commitment to automobile racing." Rollins said at a Thursday luncheon on the speedway grounds. "Racing people are our kind of people at NAPA-they are car enthusiasts whodomuch of theirown work. They make up the cross-section of Americans that we're hoping to reach." While neither Rollins or Smith would place a dollar amount on NAPA's sponsorship of the NAPA National 500. both men agreed that themoney was"suhstantial." "This weekend we're offering $18,000 in NAPA Charger Awards to the leaders of specific lap segments.'' Rollins added. "We'd like the NAPA National 500 to he equal to the Indy 500 in the eyes of the public. This i s the kind of challenge NAPA likes-going head-on against college and pro football and ihe baseball years, including the 1977. 1878 and 1879 races. Rollins said a more formal announcement regarding NAPA's sponsorship 01 a 4W)-kilometer race at Riverside. Repeated questions about NAPA's role in the National500 brought thisresponse from both Smith and Rollins: "As such. NAPA i s not paying the purse for the race. It is not paying a percentage of the purse. either. NAPA will help us promo1 the race through its 5200 stores in all : states, stores which generate $800.000.WO in business in 1975.
