INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Tomatoes are widely used around the Philippine country.

Tomatoes have greatly influenced our daily lives with its different uses Tomatoes give different taste on different delicacies; depending on how it is used or cooked. Either ways, tomatoes can be eaten raw or cooked. Tomatoes are healthy; that's why it is always been a part of Pilipino's daily diet. Tomatoes are often put on salads, sauces and beverages. Mexico is known for making delicious salads because tomatoes originated there. Tomatoes have a really big part of Philippine's country and also in the Pilipino's daily lives. It have been cultivated for many years and until today, tomatoes are still productive. Tomatoes are not only used in agriculture, but also in beauty care products; such as a moisturizing ingredient. Tomatoes have been and always will be a part of the Philippine agriculture. As constituents of the Philippines, these are the reasons why the researchers chose this study.

B. Statement of Problem The researchers will investigate the growth rate of different varieties of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Specifically this study would answer these questions: 1. How long will it take to produce tomatoes of different varieties?

2. Which of these varieties will have faster growth rate? 3. What are the possible causes of having the faster/slower period of growth from each variety?

C. Statement of the Hypothesis The hybrid-type tomato will have slower growth rate and the ordinary breed will have faster growth period.

D. Significance of the Study Tomato, as one of the common ingredients in cooking used by the country of Philippines, plays a big role in continuously showcasing the nature and skills of Pilipinos in serving great dishes. Its abundant production in this country is just a small percent of uses Philippines are needing to supply the whole country. Thus, knowing which variety will have a faster growth rate adds up to the Philippines tomato production rate. Higher production rate of the plant will therefore support the wider aim of Philippines which is to supply also neighbouring countries the healthy plant of Tomato.

E. Scope and Limitations

This study will focus on the varieties of tomatoes in the set-up. Since, the researchers will use an ordinary breed of tomato and a hybrid tomato, the growth of the plants will be thoroughly observed. During the experiment, proper soil structure and proper amount of fertilizer and water will be used on the plants. In the latter part will determine which type of tomato has the fastest growth. The study will be done from July 2013-August 2013 in the locality of Pangpang, Sorsogon City. This study will only be involving the varieties of tomatoes during and after the experiment.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND RELATED STUDIES Tomato is globally cultivated for its fleshy fruits and known as protective food because of its special nutritive value and its wide spread production. It is the worlds largest vegetable crop after potato and it tops the list of canned vegetables. Tomatoes are eaten directly as raw vegetable or consumed in a variety of processed products like catsup, sauce, juice, soup, paste, etc. It is a rich source of vitamin A and C, and also contains minerals like iron, phosphorus (Kalloo, 1991). Furthermore tomato is the richest source of nutrients, dietary fibers antioxidant like lycopene and beta-carotene, the compounds that protect cells from cancer (Hobson, 1993). Tomato has a short generation time of about three to four months. It is well fitted in different cropping systems of cereals grains, pulses and oilseeds. Hence, it is the most widely grown solanaceous vegetable crops grown worldwide under outdoor and indoor conditions.

METHODOLOGY

Materials and Equipment

Seeds of tomatoes (hybrid & ordinary breed) Fertilizer Space/Lot for planting Loam Soil Water Gloves Shovel

General Procedure The researchers will prepare the materials for the experiment. The proponents will test the seeds if they are perfect for planting by placing the seeds in different containers with water. One for the ordinary breed and one for the hybrid. All seeds that will sink are best for planting and the seeds that will float will be discarded. The researchers will proceed to the garden for planting wherein each seeds will be placed with equal spaces, two rows for hybrid and two rows for the ordinary breed to conserve space. All seeds will be planted at the same time and will be cultured until the plants are ready for harvesting. Fertilizers will also be used by the researchers and the growth rate will be observed. The

speed of the growth of the plants will be measured by the researchers for the entire experiment to test which breed of tomato is best for culturing and exporting. If the plants will bear fruits, it will be harvested and sold. A. Data Gathering Procedure The data to be gathered will mainly focus on: 1. The fastest breed to grow and bear fruits 2. The number of fruit per breed 3. The comparison between the fruits of each breed 4. The number of fruits sold B. Duration and Schedule of Activities WEEKS 1 A___ B___________________________________________________ C________ Legend: A- Preparation of seeds and plots B- Planting and cultivating C- Harvesting and Selling 2 3 4 5 6 7 8etc.
