Continuous wastewater treatment plant monitoring in copper processing

Stamolys CA71CU with Stamoclean CAT430 in an outdoor cabinet

Wieland-Werke AG produces a wide range of copper and copper-alloy semifinished goods. With some 6,500 employees working at over 30 centers worldwide, the company nets annual revenues of approx. 2.9 billion. Challenge Wastewater is generated in the production of semifinished goods. This wastewater has to be treated to reduce the residual copper contents to a level below 0.5 mg/l Cu. By means of a neutralization process, dissolved copper is precipitated and the undissolved copper is then filtered out using a fabric filter. Up to now, only manual samples were measured, where quick measurements were taken in the wastewater treatment process every three hours, and measurements were made in the laboratory once a day for self-monitoring purposes. To achieve a higher degree of safety and reliability in the treatment process, the measurement should be performed continuously by means of automatic sampling and measurement. Solution used At the end of 2007, a test measurement system was installed for a month. This test system was supplied with samples directly from the pressure pipeline, i.e. sample con-

ditioning was not connected in series upstream. The results prompted the company to install a Stamolys CA71CU unit with Stamoclean CAT430 sample conditioning for direct analysis onsite. To facilitate installation in the field, the analyzer CA71CU and the control unit of the CAT430 sample conditioning system were integrated in an outdoor housing. In this way, the sample conditioning and measurement can take place directly on site at the outlet basin. As a result, monitoring can also take place with minimum time loss when the wastewater treatment system is not manned, and more than just one measured value is obtained over the course of the day. Customer benefit By measuring with the Stamolys CA71CU unit, Wieland-Werke AG has a continuous measuring system for determining the copper content in the wastewater. The onsite installation of Endress+Hauser measuring technology in the robust outdoor housing ensures that the limit values are no longer exceeded.
