ACTION PLAN FOR CYCLONE ON THE JOB

Precautions to be taken before cyclone Check for the loose, hanging electric cables and get these dressed-up if required. Clear plants/offices of loose items that may become airborne under high winds. Check for foreign objects on tanks, roofs, etc. that may carried away by strong winds and remove them. Remove or keep all the temporary sheds secure. Check for temporarily erected structure, column, chimney, etc. and get these tightened with ropes securely. Safeguard windows and doors of manned centers, offices, etc. Ensure availability and workability of diesel sets. Keep adequate stock of diesel for diesel set. Ensure availability and workability of adequate number of de-watering pumps. Keep the vehicles full of fuel. Keep adequate stock of working torches, batteries, etc. Assemble stock of safety equipment at ECCs. Ensure the readiness of satellite communication system. Confirm by test run ready for use condition of emergency equipment. Shift valuable equipment/instrument lying in open areas to a safer and protected place. Wrap, safeguard and store all plant logs, files, and vital data at safe and protected place. Keep fire-fighting equipment secured. Keep the gas cylinders covered with their respective caps and secured. Flush drainage system in plants to check any choking. Inspect and clean rainwater, sewer and cooling water discharge system. Place roof drain of floating roof tanks in open position. Close manholes of tanks out of services. Inspect tank farm drains and keep them in open condition. Park cranes hydra, pallodars, forklifts, etc. at designated place with their forks, booms and arms down. Keep boats and tugs well secured. Anchor ships and vessels properly. Stop loading/unloading operations. Lower loading arms/hoses and secure them. Remove or cover electric motors of open areas. Safeguard power distribution boards and shutdown if not required. Identify the temporary shelters to accommodate affected persons, if any. Release personnel not required. Ensure availability and workability of adequate number of ambulances. Keep adequate stock of food, snacks and medicine. Ensure the availability of Doctors and Nursing staff. Ensure the adequate stock of drinking water tankers.

Precautions to be taken during cyclone Dont allow persons to go outdoors. Keep a window or door to your office open on the side opposite to the wind. Shutdown all PCs without UPS and disconnect their power supply. Cover them with tarpaulin if kept in temporary offices. Stop all works at height. Warn people working in open areas through PA system. Keep close watch on process parameters.

Precautions to be taken after cyclone has passed Communicate information to and from the media, local authorities and the public. Collect information from various plants/offices regarding any damage to equipment/ machinery, accident, property damage, if any. Make a list of all damages. Keep close communication with local clinics for availability of beds, doctors, etc. Inform local authorities, media and public of damage/injuries sustained, if required. Check and evaluate injured personnel and arrange for immediate attention. Restrict/disconnect access to the complex by visitors, media and other third parties. Patrol and inspect roads for safe passages and setting of roadblocks and evacuation routes. Distribute food, water containers and other emergency items, wherever required. Start cleaning of trash and debris left by storm. Release personnel groups to go back to normal operation mode. Implement internal emergency procedure, if required. Check out tanks, vessels, waste storage, roads, sites for any spills. Set priorities of repairs and ready all systems and facilities for start up. Confirm that allsafeguarding system for operations are activated. Initiate clearing of dangerous contaminated debris and trash, if any. Prepare final damage and cost report for management. Prepare report for taking more precautions next time to minimize the loss. AT HOME

Precautions to be taken before Cyclone Keep calm, dont pay attention to rumors. Dont keep telephone engaged by making unnecessary calls. You may miss an important/emergency call. Store in a secure place all loose objects such as garbage, lawn furniture, etc. Store adequate quantity of drinking water and foods that do not require cooking. Secure your personal belongings and valuable documents. Have a first aid kit on hand.

Keep gas lamps, lanterns, candles, torches, batteries, etc. in ready stock. Fill the fuel in vehicles so that can be used for handling emergencies if any. Reinforce your windows, doors and roofs. Check for loose or hanging electric cables. Get these dressed up. In case of electric supply failure, a battery-operated radio is useful to get news about weather conditions.

Precautions to be taken during cyclone Do not go outdoors. Avoid alcoholic drinks. Remain calm. Dont panic. When using lanterns, lamps, candles, etc. take the necessary precautions to prevent fire. The suction created by the difference in atmospheric pressure inside and outside of your house can blow open a window or door or may break the glasses. To avoid the same, do not seal your house completely. Leave a door or window open on the side opposite to the winds. Do not stand near or under glass and other fragile things. Better to put curtains along such materials to avoid the scattering of glass pieces in such cases. Protect yourself by taking position under strong part of your house.

Precautions to be taken after the cyclone has passed In case of sickness or accident, get medical attention immediately. Do not touch the broken or loosened electric lines, if any. Inform the concern authorities to get these repaired. Stay away from disaster areas unless you are qualified to help. Your presence as a sightseer may hamper first aid and rescue work. Use the reserve drinking water and do not dispose of it until you are sure that regular water service has been reestablished. Boil drinking water before consuming. Be careful when driving vehicles on roads, as under pavement could cave in due to the weight of your vehicle Dont eat cooked foods that are not refrigerated or canned foods that have been kept in open for a long time.
