Capital Campaign

September 8, 2013

Dear Friends and Faithful of St John of the Ladder Orthodox Church, Twenty years ago many of you embarked on a journey of faith and a labor of love the refounding of St John of the Ladder Orthodox Church. Your efforts and the efforts of many others who have participated in and have been joined to this holy labor have been richly rewarded. By Gods grace, the beauty of Christs love has been made manifest through this communitymany have been received into the Church through Baptism and Chrismation, the faithful nourished by His Body and Blood, feasts celebrated, beloved family and friends remembered, suffering relieved, lives given direction and meaning, and enduring friendships formed. From humble beginnings in a parishioners dining room to the mill house on Allen Street to our present location in a former Methodist church building near the Donaldson Center to our newly acquired church property on Roper Mountain Road Extension, we have grown and matured as a community. Today we begin an ambitious effort and ask God to bless our 2013-2016 Capital Campaign. This Capital Campaign will help fund the construction of a 4600 sq. ft. new church building and a 3200 sq. ft. parish hall. Additionally, both buildings, connected by a mostly wrap around porch and walkway, will form a level courtyard, the centerpiece of which will be an outdoor baptistery. This new church building will allow us to easily accommodate at least 250 worshippers, and the new parish hall will have indoor seating for 168, effectively doubling the capacity of our present facility in both respects. The Parish Council and Building Committee have exercised good stewardship in planning for a total project cost that is estimated at $1.5 million. Taking into consideration our available funds, the equity we have in our present property, and our potential enrollment in the Diocese of the Souths Managed Debt Program, our goal is to raise $480k through the Capital Campaign. To reach this goal we are asking every parish family and individual to make a sacrificial gift. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to dramatically equip St John of the Ladder Orthodox Church to continue its mission in the Upstate of South Carolina. Before you decide on the amount of your gift, please prayerfully consider the generosity that God has shown you, the importance of the mission we have been given, and the staggering returns that God promises to the cheerful giver. Enclosed with this brochure is a pledge card. When completed, please return it in the collection basket in the vestibule or mail it to the church. Finally, when we began this process several years ago, our building committee set the following goals: 1. That our new church building should be an icon of Christ in the community--visible, and visibly Orthodox; 2. That our Church should honor and hallow Gods creation in its design and construction; 3. That, while remaining faithful to the Great Commission, seeking to draw others to Christ, we should build a church that serves the needs of our Parish as it presently exists; and 4. That we should be audacious in our hopes for the future of our worship community. As you look through this brochure, I am sure you will be delighted by the design and scope of the project. We are not merely constructing a new building; we are hoping to transform the experience of worship at St John of the Ladder Orthodox Church. May God make this audacious hope a reality! Sincerely yours in Christ,

VRev. Fr. Marcus C Burch, Rector

THE DESIGN After carefully analyzing the Roper Mountain Road Extension property and evaluating several proposals, and after having received the recommendation of the Building Committtee, the St John of the Ladder Parish Council chose designer Andrew Gould of New World Byzantine Studios to develop plans for the new church building and the parish hall. The results speak for themselves!

THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN St John of the Ladder Orthodox Church has been planning a building project so that our facilities can accommodate the needs of our parish and position us for further growth. In order to assess and prioritize the various needs of the parish the Growth Team and Building Committee have worked over the last several years to find suitable property and to help in the design of the new church building and parish hall. To make this a reality, it is imperative to launch a capital campaign with a goal of raising $480,000. The most effective way of doing this is to appeal to you the members, friends, and benefactors of our parish. Each parishioner, family, friend, or supporter is asked to prayerfully consider his gifts from God and then express their love and gratitude by making a commitment to St John of the Ladder Orthodox Churchs Capital Campaign. It is vitally important that everyone in our parish become involved in this campaign through making a commitment. The general Capital Campaign will start on September 8, 2013, with a presentation by Fr. Marcus and Bill Wamboldt, the capital campaign chair. Every family will be given or mailed a packet containing a brochure and pledge card. We ask that these pledge cards be returned to the church by Sunday, October 9, 2013, either in the collection basket in the vestibule or by mail. A spirit of Christian community and charity will surely be realized as we place the expansion of parish facilities at the top of our common priorities for the next few years. St John of the Ladders Capital Campaign recognizes the past generosity of its members, friends, and benefactors, and challenges each of us to greater sacrifice. Just as our present facilities have served us for many years, our new church building and parish hall will serve us for generations to come. SUGGESTIONS FOR GIVING The suggested giving plan encourages financial commitments over a three-year (36 month) period. The Pledge Card provides space for you to designate your total pledge, initial offering (paid by December 31, 2013) and payment interval that best fits your circumstances. An initial offering of 10%-25% of your total gift is suggested at the time of your gift plan selection. Commitment to a suggested gift plan offers the donor a giving program that is most convenient and tax-advantaged. Spreading the payment period over several years allows for a charitable deduction to be claimed in years when the tax liability is the greatest. It also enables donors to consider more significant contributions to the Capital Campaign than would otherwise be possible. YOUR COMMITMENT You are probably thinking: How much should I or my family pledge? No one can answer this for you; each person or familys circumstance is different. We do ask you to reflect on how much God has given to you and prayerfully respond with great love and generosity. Every parishioner has an opportunity to express his love of God and return to Him a measure of the blessings He has bestowed. Regardless, please consider your commitment to this Capital Campaign as additional support for the church. Regular tithes (General Fund) and offerings are still needed to ensure that the day-today services and operation of the church are maintained.

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES In-Kind Gifts These gifts will count toward the $1.5 million total project cost and may contribute directly to the reduction of cost and completion of the planned construction. Some examples are donations of professional materials and labor, furnishings, fixtures and equipment. They could also include such things as site clearing, landscape design, or other aspects of the project not included in this initial project. Matching Gifts If you work for a company that matches gifts, you can double your gift by following your employers matching contribution procedures. Please contact your human resources office for eligibility information and to obtain a matching gift form. Planned Giving Planned giving options can be powerful tools that impact both the giver and the beneficiary. If you are interested in learning more about retirement/IRA gifts, charitable remainder trusts, wills, gifts that provide ongoing income or other estate planning techniques that can help leave a legacy gift to St John of the Ladder Orthodox Church and your family, please contact Fr. Marcus or Bill Wamboldt. Underwritten Gifts Individuals or organizations will be given the opportunity to help cover the cost of items needed with the new church building, parish hall, and baptistery. Below are some examples. If you are interested in discussing underwriting options for any of these or other needs, please contact Fr. Marcus or Bill Wamboldt, Campaign Chair. Church-Friendly Loans In addition to ones pledge there may be those who have monies that he or she might not be able to give outright to the St. John of the Ladder Capital Campaign, but that might be put to use in the form of friendly loans which would be used to fund a portion of the projected $1.5 million construction cost and would be guaranteed by the Diocese of the South. If you would like more information about this possibility, please contact Fr. Marcus or Bill Wamboldt, Campaign Chair, for details. Gift Acceptance Although pledge commitments may be paid over a three-year period, there is need to collect as much of the funding as possible in the remainder of 2013. It will be necessary to have a significant portion of funds in hand before beginning construction. Our plan will be to put our 701 Augusta Arbor Way property on the market only when we have met our target of $480,000 in pledges and $240,000 of that target has been received. We hope that you are able to structure your gift to help us meet the proposed construction target start date of July 2014. Gifts may be given in the form of cash, checks, credit, and stocks or other easily liquidated property (e.g., unused gold jewelry or silverware, coin or stamp collections, other collectibles, etc.) All gifts to the Capital Campaign are deductible as a charitable contribution to the full extent of the law. PLEDGE CARD (Please fill out, sign, and return your Capital Campaign Pledge Card to the collection basket or by mail to the church by October 9, 2013.)
