We reviewed over 250 papers in the family business literature. A list of 21 definitions that touch on the degree or nature of family involvement is presented in Table 1 below. The definitions include three qualifying combinations of ownership and management. (A) family owned and family managed; (B) family owned but not family managed; and (C) family managed but not family owned.

All of the definitions in Table 1 consider combination (A) to be a family business. There is disagreement, however, on the othertwo combinations, although most authors seem to prefer combination (B) over (C).
