Summer Reading for Children and Teens @ RPL a Success!

Over 9000 thousand children and parents made RPL's Dig into Reading! summer program a huge success! Programs were held at all three RPL locations and RPL's Western Rowan outreach center located in Cleveland Town Hall. Participating children submitted over 11,000 reading hours this year, and more than 590 books were given away! The festivities began a week after the end of school with RPL's kick-off events. Children ages 1-5 were entertained by staff members telling fun children's stories focused on planting gardens, construction vehicles, and burrowing animals. The school age children were entertained by professional

performers, including a magician, puppets, polka music and variety show. We congratulate the winners of our official 2013 Dig into Reading prize baskets: Danielle Higgins, Jalera Hoskins, Na'Kayra Macon, Montgomery Schneider, Jonathon Therecka, and Chloe Whitley. Beneath the Surface, RPL's seventh Teen Summer Reading Program, included panning for gems, crafts, jeopardy, underground cities, skill toys workshops and a masked ball. The 227 participating teens submitted over 9500 hours of reading, earned over 100 books and were able purchase raffle tickets for great prizes sponsored by the Friends of RPL.

The Rowan Public Library would like to thank all of the sponsors of the Dig into Reading and Beneath the Surface summer reading programs: Cheerwine, ChickFil-A, Krispy Kreme Donuts, NC Zoo, Rowan County, The State Library of North Carolina, Sweet Frogs, Ultimate Sports Apparel, Woodleaf Lanes, and a very special thank you to the Friends of the Rowan Public Library, who generously fund the majority of our children's programming.
