Abstract: This study analyzed the depiction of homosexuals, the 7.1 Summary issues confronted by these homosexuals, their responses and their use of gay language as seen in the 12 stories in Ladlad: An Anthology of Philippine Gay Writing. The stories were: Red and Luha ni Michael by Jimmy Alcantara, Par by Edzel Cardil, Lucy by Miguel Castro, Pagkatapos Ng Dilim by Rands Catalan, Geyluv by Honorio de Dios, Boys Who Like Boys by Vicente Groyon III, Hedonicus by Jaime Lim, Ang Lalaling Inpinalihi kay Marilyn Monroe by Alfredo Moran, Ang H.P. at si Danny by Earl Navaroo, Simpleng Taytel, Kumpletong Kuwento by Murphy Red, Green Rose by Danton Remoto, and Coming Out by Jerry Torres. There were three approaches used in this study. The psychological approach was used to explore the inner lives of the homosexual characters. The sociological approach was applied to see the conditions of the homosexual characters in the society. The sociolinguistic approach was employed to determine the role of gay language in these short stories. An interview with Danton Remoto, one of the editors of Ladlad, was done by the researcher to gain more information necessary in this study.

ii 7.2 Finding In the 12 short stories, the homosexual characters were depicted as either covert homosexuals or overt homosexuals. The covert homosexuals were afraid to show their real identity to the public. They were hiding in the closet. The homosexuals in Ladlad short stories were hiding because of various reasons. The overt homosexuals where those who were out of the closet. They were known by the public as such. Thus, they were victims of homophobia. Most of these characters regardless whether they were covert or overt homosexuals were involved in homosexual relationships, such as: Open-:Coupled, Close-Coupled and Functionals. Their relationships could either be based on love or sex alone. The conditions of the homosexual characters in the society and their situations with regard to their homosexual relationships led them to face different conflicts in life. The gay language was use only in short stories written in Filipino. The gay language projected the homosexuals happy experiences and flirtatious mannerisms. This study tackled the tensions and the tangled 7.3 Conclusions emotions experienced by both covert and overt homosexual characters. These homosexuals were different from one another in terms of: (1) the way they submit or struggle in a homophobic society, (2) their view on love and sex, (3) their responses toward their homosexuality. Further, gay language was use only to portray the homosexuals happy moments. 7.4 Recommendations The study can be further explored by including the poems, essays, and plays found in the anthology. It can be further developed through a comparative analysis of these short stories, written by homosexuals themselves, to gay short stories, written by Straight authors.
