Syllabus of Ph.D. Course Work Paper I RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Max.

Marks: 100

4 Credits Time Allowed: 3 hours Pass Marks: 40% Total Teaching Hours: 50 Out of 100 marks, internal assessment carries 50 marks (two house test (30%), one assignment(10%) and one seminar (10%) and the final examination at the end of the semester carries 50 marks. INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PAPER-SETTER The question paper will consist of five sections A, B, C, D and E. Sections A, B, C, and D will have two questions from respective sections of the syllabus, and section E will have short answer type questions from the entire syllabus uniformly. All the sections A, B, C, D and E carry equal marks. INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CANDIDATES The candidates are required to attempt one question each from the sections A, B, C and D of the question paper, and the entire section E. Use of Scientific Calculators is allowed. Section A Research Methods: Meaning, Objectives and Motivation of Research, Types of Research, Research Methodology, Research and Scientific Method, Research Process, Criterion of Good Research, Problems encountered in Research in India. Research-Reports Writing: Significance, Steps and Layout, Types of Report, oral presentation, Computer System, Multimedia techniques, Powerpoint presentation: Menus, Navigating and working with Powerpoint. Section B Computer Oriented Numerical Methods:- Numerical Errors Analysis, Solution of Equations: Simple iterative methods, Newton-Raphson Method, Secant Method, Newton Method in 2 dimensions, Solution of Simultaneous equations: Gauss-Jordon Elimination Method, Gauss-Seidel Iteration, Numerical Differential and Integration: Differentiation using forward, backward and central difference methods, Trapezoidal rule, Simpsons Rule. Section C Solution of Differential Equations:- Euler Method, Heuns Method, Runge-Kutta Method, PredictorCorrector Method, Solution of Coupled differential Equations, and Second order differential equations. Statistical Methods:- Interpolation: Lagranges interpolation and Newton Method, linear interpolation and higher degree interpolation, Data fitting: least chi-square straight line fitting, least chi-square parabolic fitting, Monte-Carlo Method: Pseudo-Random Numbers and their generation methods, and properties, Monte-Carlo technique using random numbers. Section D Algorithmic Methods: Development of Algorithms for solving following physics problems:1. Viscous Effects on One Dimensional Motion. 2. Drag Effects on Two Dimensional Motion of Projectiles. 3. Motion of Harmonic and Anharmonic Oscillators. 4. Motion of Damped and Driven Oscillator. 5. Analysis of voltage and currents in Simple Electrical circuits. 6. Analysis of voltage and currents in RC and LR circuits with constant or variable resistance. 7. Analysis of Electromagnetic Oscillations in LCR circuits: Damped and Driven Circuits. 8. Quantum Mechanical Schrodinger Equation for Harmonic Potential (1-dim). 9. Monte-Carlo Method for performing Multi-dimensional Integration. 10. Monte-Carlo Technique for analyzing Nuclear Radioactive Decay.
