Drill Stem Components

More than 95 years of experience

TAG is a leading drilling contractor and manufacturing plant with more than 500 employees, founded in 1912 by Hermann von Rautenkranz. ITAG is still privately owned and located in Celle, Germany. Today, ITAG is divided in three close cooperating companies, ITAG L&R GmbH, ITAG Valves and Oilfield Products GmbH, and ITAG Tiefbohr GmbH. The main products of ITAG L&R, which stands for long and round, are drill stem components, mandrel bars, propeller shafts, tie rods, high pressure tubes, and truck winches. With a background of almost 100 years of worldwide experience in drilling and workover activities, ITAG puts all of its know-how and engineering expertise into the development of equipment for the oil and gas industry.

Drill Collars
Box end
TAG Drill Collars are high quality products which meet the hardest operating conditions. Each collar undergoes strict quality control, more than one hundred checks are made in the course of manufacturing. All mechanical properties meet or exceed the requirements of API Spec. 7-1 for Drill Collars. ITAG Drill Collars are made of AISI 4145 H modified alloy steel or non-magnetic material. Other grades are available on request. ITAG Drill Collars are used successfully for sour gas wells. After forging or rolling, the bars are peeled, heat treated, stress relieved, ultrasonically inspected and straightened to API specifications, to ensure that each bar will meet the physical properties shown in Table 1.2. Machining and Manufacturing ITAG Drill Collar bars are bored under ultrasonic control and gauged to API specifications with a 10 ft. drift mandrel. The thread connections on AISI 4145 H mod. are protected by manganese phosphatizing to minimize galling during make-up and all threads are coated with API thread compound on copper, zinc or lead base. All Drill Collar end connections are provided with thread protectors.

Inspection After machining each Drill Collar is inspected again by ITAG Quality Control. The most important tests carried out on thread connections are magnetic particle inspection (MT) on AISI 4145 H mod. or liquid-penetrant (PT) testing on non-magnetic material respectively, gauging of thread connections with API gauges, and general dimension checks. The customer will receive certificates with the results of the above tests together with the material certificate stating chemical and physical properties of the used material. Hardbanding Hardbanding will be applied on request on both ends of the Drill Collar and between slip and elevator recess. The available space for future recutting of the threads is not affected, as the tool joint length is increased. The 4 OD is the smallest diameter that can be hardbanded due to thin walls in smaller sizes. Hardbanding material consists of granular tungsten carbide that is fed automatically into the molten weld puddle to obtain uniform distribution of the tungsten carbide particles. The resulting deposit of hardbanding can be flush to the OD of the collar or raised according to customers specification.

Spiral Finish Spiralized Drill Collars are used to prevent differential pressure sticking as they reduce wall contact between the Drill Collar and the well surface. See Table 1.4 and Figure 1.3. The pin and box end of the collar are left uncut to allow recutting of thread connections. Slip and Elevator Recess For safety reasons and faster handling, slip and elevator recesses are cut on request. Slip and elevator recesses are used together or separately. To avoid fatigue failures initiating from sharp notches, emphasis is placed on the machining of smooth radii. The elevator shoulder is cold-worked.

Bend-relief Recess External stress-relief grooves on both ends of the Drill Collars reduce the bending stresses in the thread connections. These stressrelief grooves result in a strong decrease of fatigue damages. Further information on request. Stress-relief Features on Thread Connections The thread connections of ITAG Drill Collars have cold-worked stress-relief features according to API to minimize bending stresses of pin and box. See Table 1.5 and Figure 1.6. Recommended make-up torques see Table 1.8. Cold-worked Thread Roots Drill Collar connection life can be improved by pre-stressing the thread roots of connections by cold working. In this process a hydraulic ram forces the roller into the thread root, and the roller is then moved down the thread spiral. The roller has the same contour as the thread root, and pressure between the two causes a cold working of the metal in the thread root. Cold worked metal surfaces have greater resistance to fatigue failure, because after thread rolling is completed, the fibers in the thread roots remain in compression. As a result, cold rolled thread roots can withstand bending stresses longer without cracking in fatigue.

Heavy Weight Drill Pipes Non-welded

Box end
General ITAG Heavy Weight Drill Pipes (HWDP) are less rigid than Drill Collars, but much heavier in weight than normal Drill Pipes. Therefore they are mainly used for directional drilling, with high deviation angle. Mounted between Drill Collars and Drill Pipes, Heavy Weight Drill Pipes reduce the high bending stresses, thus protecting the thread connections in the transition zone. ITAG Heavy Weight Drill Pipes have the same outside dimensions as Drill Pipes for easy handling. The central upset protects the pipe surface from abrasive wear. The extra long tool joints allow recutting of threads several times. Material ITAG Heavy Weight Drill Pipes are nonwelded. They are made of one solid bar of AISI 4145 H modified alloy steel or nonmagnetic material. They have optimal grain structure and avoid the well-known disadvantages of welding. AISI 4145 H mod. has a yield strength of 120.000 psi, and thus is best suitable for standard operations as well as directional or horizontal drilling. Performance data see Table. 2. 4. Machining and Inspection The accuracy of machining and inspection of ITAG Heavy Weight Drill Pipes is as demanding as in the Drill Collar production. Ultrasonic tests over the entire length, magnetic particle testing of thread connections, gauging of thread connections with API gauges and general dimen sion control are only a few tests of the full inspection program. These inspections and also the chemical and mechanical properties are recorded in test certificates which the customer will receive with each Drill Pipe. Dimensional data see Table 2.2 and - 2.3. The thread connections are treated by a phosphate surface coating to keep the API thread compound on copper, zinc or lead base in place and to minimize galling during make-up and break-out. Pressed steel thread protectors or if desired - steel armed plastic protectors are furnished to all heavy wall Drill Pipe end connections. Hardbanding To improve wear characteristics, Arnco 300 or TITAN hardbanding is used on pin and box connections and central upsets. Hardbanding material consists of granular tungsten carbide that is fed automatically into the molten weld puddle to obtain uniform distribution of the tungsten carbide particles. Standard pads: One 3 wear pad on both pin and box end, plus one 3 pad on taper section of box; Two 3 wear pads on central upsets. For standard one layer completely flush with the OD on both tool joints and center upset is applied. If casing wear is a problem, customers should specify anti-casing wear with an additional cover layer. Stress Relief Features The thread connections of ITAG Heavy Weight Drill Pipes have stress relief features according to API to minimize bending stresses of pin and box. Recommended make-up torques see table 2.5. Stress relief features as well as thread roots are cold-worked. Internal Coating ITAG Heavy Weight Drill Pipes will be provided with internal plastic coating on customers request. However, as there are no critical weldings where corrosion can start, internal plastic coating is normally not required, and therefore such expenses can be saved.

General ITAG Pup Joints are made from heat treated low alloy or nonmagnetic steel with the same specifications as for Drill Collars. All connections are machined and finished according to API specification. Machining and Manufacturing The drill stem subs are manufactured acc. to API Spec. 7-1, Sec. 7. Only certified materials are used. After gauging and magnetic particle testing the thread roots are cold-rolled to improve the performance of the connection. To prevent galling the threads are phosphatized and fully coated with API thread compound. Furthermore all subs are provided with thread protectors.
