Optional Activities

Renaissance Charlotte SouthPark: Our host hotel is the Renaissance Charlotte SouthPark, a boutique Marriott property which holds a AAA four diamond rating. Continental breakfast and a lunch buffet will be served at the meeting room Friday and Saturday. Friday evening's reception and dinner will feature a sumptuous buffet of traditional southern foods Located in one of Charlotte's most upscale and thriving areas, the Renaissance is just a few steps from SouthPark Mall which features more than 150 stores, including Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Macy's, as well as a diverse selection of restaurants and specialty shops. Also within walking distance are additional shopping and restaurant centers: Phillips Place (www.phillipsplace.com), Specialty Shops on the Park (www.specialtyshopsonthepark.com) and Piedmont Town Center (www.piedmonttowncenter.com). Friday Optional Activities and Event Sites: Bechtler Museum of Modern Art is only the second in this country designed by the Swiss architect Mario Botta. The collection includes works by the most important and influential artists of the mid 20th century including Mir, Giacometti, Picasso, Calder, Hepworth, Nicholson, and Warhol. Only a handful of these wonderful artworks have been on public view in the United States. Until now, the collection was privately held by the Bechtler family of Switzerland. The Harvey Gantt Museum is dedicated to preserving and celebrating excellence in the art, history and culture of African-Americans. Its new exhibitions include: I Got Freedom Up Over My Head: Portraits by Julie Moos that capture women who have been active citizens, church members and civil rights activists; Jonathan Green's A Spiritual Journey of Life reflecting Gullah culture and the Low Country; and Etched In The Eyes by David Herman, that examines the young, the old, and the lives in between of the unique Gullah/Geechee coastal culture. Charlotte City/Levine Cancer Center Tour: Journey down the busy uptown streets to popular dining spots, entertainment, sports arenas, galleries, museums, shopping and historical buildings. From here we go into historic neighborhoods featuring Victorian and early nineteenth century homes with classical architecture and beautiful tree-lined streets. There will be a 15-minute stop for refreshments at Reid's, Charlotte's original specialty food store. The final stop will be at the Levine Cancer Institute, the newest major cancer institute in the United States. Initiated in 2011 under the leadership of Derek Raghavan, MD PhD, formerly Director of the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute, this entity is comprised of 12 hospital based cancer programs in North and South Carolina and is part of the Carolinas HealthCare System which includes 2600 physicians, a staff of 40,000, more than 35 hospitals and 1 million patient encounters per year. The Levine Cancer Institute has rapidly emerged as a leading cancer center in the USA,

already attaining a place in the Becker List of Top Cancer Hospitals, and is a leading exponent of bringing cancer care closer to home. Unique features include system-wide video conferencing on complex cancers, innovative cancer trials, survivorship programs for cured patients and for those undergoing treatment, and state-of-the-art technologies for diagnosis and treatment. The tour of the Levine Cancer Institute headquarters will include an overview of the program, a view of the unique architectural features, access to the video-conferencing facilities, and a window into the survivorship and patient support facilities. Saturday Optional Activities and Event Sites: Museum of the New South: Levine Museum of the New South is an interactive history museum that provides the nation with the most comprehensive interpretation of post-Civil War southern society featuring men, women and children, black and white, rich and poor, long-time residents and newcomers who have shaped the South since the Civil War. The centerpiece of the Museum is the award-winning exhibition, Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers: Charlotte and the Carolina Piedmont in the New South. Covering 8,000 square feet, the exhibit features Charlotte and its 13 surrounding counties as a case study to illustrate the profound changes in the South since the Civil War. Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden: Part nature preserve, part showcase for the best of Southern horticulture, the Garden has110 acres in cultivation for guests to enjoy including: The 13,500 square foot Robert Lee Stowe Visitor Pavilion topped with a magnificent stained-glass dome 10 acres of manicured, themed gardens: The year-round Four Seasons Garden, the tropically-themed Canal Garden, four distinct Perennial Gardens, the nostalgic Cottage Garden, the fragrant Conifer Garden, the Encore Azalea spring and fall blooming Garden and stately West Gardens 12 delightful fountains Woodland trail The Garden Store stocked with "must-have" unique items, many hand-crafted by local artisans The Orchid Conservatory opened in January 2008 Carolinas Aviation Museum: This museum features a collection of aircraft, helicopters, equipment, gadgets and printed material covering years of aviation history. One of its most popular exhibits, "Miracle on the Hudson" allows you to sit beside the actual aircraft and listen to the passengers describe on video what happened and how they felt as the events unfolded. Founded in 1992, and located at the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, the Carolinas Aviation Museum is the largest aviation museum between Washington, DC and Robbins, GA. Quail Hollow Country Club: Home of the Wells Fargo PGA Championship (formerly the Wachovia Championship), Quail Hollow Country Club is a private member club. Quail Hollow has also hosted the Kemper Open and the PaineWebber Invitational and will host the prestigious PGA Championship in 2017. The course was originally designed by golf course architect George Cobb to capture the beauty and challenging terrain of the Piedmont. Improvements and modifications have been made by such notables as Arnold Palmer and Tom Fazio. Our reception and dinner will be held in the Pavilion, overlooking the course. Sunday Activities: Nascar Hall of Fame: Located in Uptown Charlotte, the 150,000-square-foot NASCAR Hall of Fame is an interactive, entertainment attraction honoring the history and heritage of NASCAR. The high-tech venue, designed to educate and entertain race fans and non-fans alike, opened May 11, 2010 and includes artifacts, interactive exhibits, and a 278-person state-of-the-art theater. Also on the property is Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant and the NASCAR Hall of Fame Gear Shop. The goal of the facility is to honor NASCAR icons and create an enduring tribute to the drivers, crew members, team owners and others that have impacted the sport in the past, present and future. The Charlotte Speedway, located in nearby Concord, brings in more than $400 million annually to our state's economy. As a result, Stock Car Racing is North Carolina's "official state sport," so designated by the senate in 2009. Croquet Teaching Session/Barbecue: If there is sufficient interest, Damon Bidencope, champion croquet player, will provide instruction and a barbecue lunch. The Conference organizing committee will provide transportation. Additional details will be provided directly to those who indicate their interest on the Conference Registration Form

Please note: Pricing for optional activities includes group transportation and in most cases, tour guides. While transportation will be "door to door" we encourage you to wear comfortable walking shoes. If you are unsure as to the amount of walking involved, please contact Jayne King for further information. The Stowe Botanical Garden/Aviation Museum will involve quite a bit of walking, so those with limited mobility may wish to choose other options.
