School-Wide Reading Requirement


Three Cups of Tea
Everyone should enjoy reading, and reading should en-
rich our lives. In an effort to make summer reading into
a school-wide initiative, all students will be required to
read the same book, but may, depending on reading
level, choose between two versions of the book. The
book chosen for this year is Three Cups of Tea by Greg
Mortenson and David Relin.

About the Book:


Some failures lead to phenomenal successes, and this
American nurse's unsuccessful attempt to climb K2, the
world's second tallest mountain, is one of them. Dangerously ill when he finished
his climb in 1993, Mortenson was sheltered for seven weeks by the small Paki-
stani village of Korphe; in return, he promised to build the impoverished town's
first school, a project that grew into the Central Asia Institute, which has since
constructed more than 50 schools across rural Pakistan and Afghanistan. Coau-
thor Relin recounts Mortenson's efforts in fascinating detail, presenting compel-
ling portraits of the village elders, con artists, philanthropists, mujahideen, Tali-
ban officials, ambitious school girls and upright Muslims Mortenson met along
the way. As the book moves into the post-9/11 world, Mortenson and Relin
argue that the United States must fight Islamic extrem-
ism in the region through collaborative efforts to allevi-
ate poverty and improve access to education, especially
for girls. Captivating and suspenseful, with engrossing
accounts of both hostilities and unlikely friendships, this
book will win many readers' hearts. (Mar.)

Three Cups of Tea is available for readers of various
levels. Franklin High School students may elect either
the original version (pictured at the op of the page) or the Young Reader ver-
sion (pictured to the left). Parents are encouraged to help students choose the
most appropriate level of the book.

The Assessment
Not all assessments need to be paper and pencil
tests. Greg Mortenson founded the Central Asia
Institute as a result of his work described in the
book. In turn, the CAI has developed a
program, Pennies for Peace.

“Pennies for Peace educates children


about the world beyond their experience
and shows them that they can make a positive impact on a global scale,
one penny at a time.

Our best hope for a peaceful and prosperous world lies in the education of all
the world’s children. Through cross-cultural understanding and a solution-
oriented approach, Pennies for Peace encourages children, ultimately our fu-
ture leaders, to be active participants in the creation of global peace.”

Next year, the school will participate in this program as a culmination of the
summer reading program. In addition, themes from the book may be inter-
woven into course curricula as appropriate and the school is working to
schedule a guest speaker from the Central Asia Institute to speak with stu-
dents. In addition, students may be asked to write reflections on the reading
and the initiative to be included in writing folders.

Recommended 9th Grade Reading


Developing good habits is critical to success in high
school. That is why for the last three years, Franklin
High School freshmen have all read the 7 Habits of
Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey.

Students planning to attend Franklin High School may


either purchase the book on their own or obtain a copy
by visiting the Franklin High School Main Office during
summer hours. Students should read the book during
the summer in preparation for a great start to 9th grade.

The High School Experience, the one week enrichment program offered to
incoming 9th grade students focuses on concepts from the book each day. In
addition, the ideas presented in the book will help students lay the foundation
for a great freshman year!
