LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

PREREQUISITE : Knowledge of Geography and Geology CORE REQUISITE : Knowledge of basic GIS & Remote Sensing and some basic database knowledge.

OBJECTIVES OF COURSE: Upon completion of this course the learners will develop a clear understanding of GIS & Remote sensing concepts and image processing techniques related to petroleum industry.

SYLLABUS Introduction to GIS: Definition & Uses Historical Development of GIS & Application Domains

Geo-Referencing: Geo-referencing Concepts Projection Systems Recording & Maintaining Position on the Earths Surface, GPS Technology

Computer Mapping: Data Types and Representations Digital Representation of Map data Map Objects, Symbology, Map Generalization

Thematics & Application Areas: Resource Data Management and Network Management

Spatial Data Processing: Storage & Management of Spatial Data Structures Geo-processing

Database Processing: Geospatial Data Production Integration Attribute & Spatial data query

Photogrammetry: Concepts of Photogrammetry

Digital Imagery: Remote Sensing & Scanner Technology Image Processing tools

EVALUATION OF GRADING: Students will be evaluated based on the following 3 stages. 5.1 5.2 5.3 Internal Assessment Mid term Examination End term Examination 30% 20% 50%

5.1.

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT:

WEIGHTAGE 30%

5.1.1 CLASS TESTS/QUIZZES: One Class Test based on descriptive type theoretical questions and One Quiz based on objective type questions will be held in the Mid Term; and One Class Test and One Quiz during the End Term. One home Assignment before the End Semester Examination will be given. Those who do not appear in the class tests and quizzes, and who do not submit their assignments on time shall lose their marks.

5.1.2 GENERAL DISCIPLINE: Based on students regularity, punctuality, sincerity and behaviour in the class.

5.2

MID TERM EXAMINATION:

WEIGHTAGE 20%

Mid Term examination shall be Two Hours duration and shall be a combination of Short and Long theory Questions. Date of showing Mid Term Examination Answer Sheets: Oct. 14- 20 October, 2013

5.3

END TERM EXAMINATION:

WEIGHTAGE 50%

End Term Examination shall be Three Hours duration and shall be a combination of Short and Long theory/numerical Questions. 6.0 GRADING: The overall marks obtained at the end of the semester comprising all the above three mentioned shall be converted to a grade. 7.0. ATTENDANCE: Students are required to have a minimum attendance of 75% in the subject. Students with less than the stipulated percentage shall not be allowed to appear in the End Term Examination. 8.0 DETAILED SESSION PLAN
