MISSIONS EDITION

Dear Friends,

DOROTHY UHLIG'S REPORT FROM THAILAND

JANUARY 24, 2000

Praise the Lord the dire predictions for Y2K didn't materialize.
Looking back we can see the faithfulness: More people are coming to the Lord. Four students are in Bible college and want to serve the Lord. Two Mien churches have built meeting halls.

We did make a minimum

of preparation -- to have some food, water and candles on hand. The missionaries gathered together for a time of fellowship and prayer on New Year's Eve to greet the new century.

A Mong and a Mien church are planning to start building. Christians have a burden for sharing the gospel both in Thailand and across
the borders.

The dorm students had an overnight retreat -- the boys to Puchifa mountain and the girls to a waterfall. School will be out for summer vacation mid-March to mid-May.

Clinic was granted permission to sell medicines until the end of January. The Baptist clinic in Nan bought a lot and we've sold some to others. I may send the remainder to those working among refugees on the Burma border. There is continual fighting between the

rebels (tribal people in the north seeking self rule) and the communist government troops.
Perhaps I will have a chance to visit some of the camps. Most of the refugees are innocent people caught in the cross-fire. Their villages have been burned by government troops.
LEADERSHIP TRAINING

Mike Phillips and his family have just returned from a 6 months furlough. He started his leadership training classes Jan. 18 and will have a 4 day session each month. We saw the Lord's leading when a group of students missed the noon bus home and had, to spend an other night. They attended a prayer meeting and when requests for prayer were made PISANU asked for prayer. He said he couldn't understand the Bible or the teaching. Each time he'd
try to read the Bible or pray, a picture of his initiation in a demon service came to mind

and he'd see the idol and picture of demons and the demon priest making a mark on his fore head dedicating him to the demons. Satan was keeping him from understanding the Bible or praying. As the Christians began to pray for him he started to shake and cry out. Then the demons left and he was free and began praising the Lord. "Thank you Lord that we missed the bus today. Thank you, Jesus. I'm free." The leader then asked him if he had any charms or things used in demon worship at his home. Yes, but he would destroy them as soon as he got home. John and a Thai pastor will be visiting several Mien villages next week and will see him and encourage him. He has a 6th grade education and is a leader in his village,
His deliverance will bring others to the Lord. PRAY FOR HIM AND THE OTHER 12 MEN THAT THEY
WILL RETURN TO STUDY EACH MONTH AND GROW IN THE LORD.
COMING EVENTS

A team of Christian doctors will be coming to hold clinics in 3 Aka villages in the

province north of us.

The Phillips and I have been asked to go as interpreters (from

English to Thai).

They will also have Aka to interpret from Aka to Thai.

Sounds compli

cated. Hopefully quite a few of the Aka will know Thai. It should be an interesting ex perience and may give me a better idea of how effective such efforts are. A lot depends on the national evangelist who visits with the people and holds evangelistic meetings at
night. The villages where the clinics will be held are located in the mountains far from government hospitals. This coincides with my clinic closing the end of January so I am looking forward to what the Lord has for me in the future. Loon, the woman working for me, has asked me to start a Bible class in February for her and others.

The first of January I started teaching English to a Thai preacher so he can avail him self of the English Christian books. In return he is repainting some large ply-board figures of the nativity that I have used for years. He's an. artist and is making chrono logical charts of the Bible in Thai, Mien and Mong for use among the churches. Actually he came with his family to be in charge of an orphanage for children whose parents have died of AIDS; but due to problems it will be built elsewhere. He is staying here so his children won't have to transfer schools again until after the school year ends in March, The Lord has opened up a position for his wife to teach in a private school, but he is free so is doing the art work for us and preaching in different churches on the weekends, Man's plans and God's plans aren't always the same. We must be flexible and follow where
God leads and seek to glorify Him, PRAY FOR THE LORD'S LEADING FOR WIMON.

DANG is working in Bangkok.

TAO is having many problems and needs much prayer. He left home Jan. 18. CHAO is still working in Taiwan but will have 10 days vacation in Thailand during Chinese New Year which begins Feb. 5th. ALL THREE BOYS NEED MUCH PRAYER THAT THEY WILL
MAKE CHRIST LORD OF THEIR LIVES.

KWAN was home at New Years for 2 days. He is still working for Honda but is thinking of changing jobs if he can find another. He only has an occasional Sunday off and his spiritual life is suffering. Thank you for all your faithfulness in prayer, encouragement and support. Without your faithfulness little could be accomplished and without God's faithfulness we would be
doomed to failure. As Jesus said, "Without me you can do nothing." Only as we are united to Him and He is working through us can the lost be reached for Christ and Christians
built up. CONTINUE TO UPHOLD US IN PRAYER.

Rejoicing in His faithfulness.

Dear Friends;

July 2000

When I went to Pepper village (Mien) on Sunday I met Granny LaiGuang and her grandson,

helped them take off the strings tied around the.r wrists that had to do with demon worship. Grandfather KuiWun brought them but he didn't want to become a Christian. When I asked why they believed he said granny had been very ill last year and doing demon worship didn't help so they went to the hospital and eventually she got well. He was afraid she'd get sick

Dear Friands,

DOROTHY UHLIG'S REPORT FROM THAILAND

NOVEMBER 18, 2000

The Lord changes and transforms lives and makes those that are of no value to have worth

and to be to the praise of His glory. One such young man is SOMCHM, an orphan of unltnown descent who was enticed to leave his village in Burma or Laos when he \\ras about 10 years old. He was brought to the mountains in Nan Province and was a water boy for the Chinese

soldiers used by the Thai government to fight the communists. He was 10 or 11 years old at the time. After several months he ran away and was finally befriended by an old granny in the Refugee camp of Nam Yao. Later he went to Peace village (Santipap) and worked for and lived with many different families. He learned the Mien language and also their vices drugs, gambling, drinking, etc. The years went by and then he heard about Jesus when some Mien Christians visited his

village.

I work with him some on reading Thai.

He is over 35 years old.

On Nov. 19 he, and three others who were in our dorm last year, will be going to a Tribal

Bible school in Chiengrai for 2 months. John Goddard will be taking them. The parents of the 2 girls from Pleasantville are not yet Christians so are not willing to help their
daughters, but they haven't forbidden them. PRAY FOR ITIEIR FAMILIES.

A group of young people from Malaysia will be here on Nov. 24 to present a program to our dorm students, the girls from the Home of Refuge and other young people the kids invite. It is good to see Christian young people from nearby countries sharing the gospel.

The Mong at Development village have decided to hold their Christmas meeting at the end
of Mong New Year celebration Dec. 30th.
NEW AREAS OF SERVICE

With the closing of clinic the Lord has been directing me into other areas of service. I'll still be assisting the church at Development village, but during tha week will be doing more visitation, letter writing to encourage church leaders and college students, helping with accounts as well as starting on the history of the work in Chiengkam. LOON, who works for me, became a Christian last January. She enjoys going with me to visit in

the hospital and homes.

(She's the chauffeur as we go on her moirorbike.)

She is very

concerned about reaching the people in her village.

Last Christmas she and her husband

had a program at their house and invited neighbors. Their church helped with the program and some financing for food and sweets. This year the church is going to have a bigger
outreach at the village school and should have 500 people or more.
