M
arita was married at
age 32 and has three
very bright children. She
is happy with her family.
But she recounts that after
five years of her marriage,
all turned into a seeming
nightmare. Her husband
always came home drunk,
abused her verbally, and had
another woman. Her parents
did not like her husband from
the beginning and so they
blamed her for the failure.
All of this she bore silently
for the sake of her family. She
told me apologetically, But I
dont feel like being a martyr
much less humiliated. It is
just because I have already
been prepared for all that
would happen. I know from
our seminars on marriage
before our wedding that there
are so many problems and
trials in married life. But all
these had to pass. And now
I must say I am very happy.
My children have fnished
their courses, and have works
and promising careers; my
parents apologized to me and
treat me with love and my
husband left all his vices and
became a very responsible
and l ovi ng f at her and
husband. Whatever happens
I just hold on to the Lord.
To be a disciple is to be a
follower of Jesus and to walk
with him. To follow Jesus is
to choose to live a fuller life
although it involves foregoing
what is appealing to human
nature. A disciple practices
self-denial and renunciation
that brings him or her joy.
To be a disciple is to love the
Lord above all. This means to
have the love of Martha and
Mary (10:38-42), of Jerusalem
women (23:27-32), of the
women at Calvary (23:49), of
the daring women who visit
the tomb (23:55-56).These
women followed the Lord
where men dared not go.
Hating ones father or
mother, wife and children,
brothers and sisters, and even
ones life to follow the Lord
means that God comes frst
in ones life. Giving God frst
place in our life means to love
others the way the Lord loves
them. The Lord sacrifices
himself. The Masters painful
experiences must not be
different from the disciples
life.This a disciple must
know and be convinced.
Jesus does not fool us. When
Fr. Joemarie decided to be
a religious priest, he was
aware of what kind of life
he was joining. It is a life of
self-denial and renunciation.
It is a life of simplicity and
humility and at the same
time it is a life of service and
sacrifice. He knew he had
to give his life to something
more important than himself.
And he is eager to pay the
price. Jesus does not promise
an easy life. But he assures
us of the great reward if we
persevere in following him.
A disciple holds on to Jesus
with tenacity and conviction
when trials come because he
becomes prudent like a man
in the Gospel who plans and
has the resources to finish
it (v.28) or like a king who
would not fght if he believes
that it would just be a losing
move (vv. 31-32). He is wise.
He renounces his pride. A
disciple likewise renounces
all that hinder him or her from
following the Lord. Marita
loves her family more than
herself. For her, there is a
higher thing to live for than
to wallow in self-pity. She is
prudent, realistic, and she did
not rush-in her marriage;
she pl anned, consul t ed
the right persons, attended
seminars on marriage, she
prayed. She was not blind to
the hardships and diffculties
whi ch marri age bri ngs.
She knows her married life
demands total commitment
and promises joy.

THE INTRODUCTORY
RITES
Entrance Antiphon
[Ps 119 (118):137, 124]
(Recited when there is no opening song)
You are just, O Lord, and your
judgment is right; treat your
ser vant in accord with your
merciful love.
Greeting
(The sign of the cross is made here)
P The Lord calls us to follow
him without conditions. May
you heed his call and may his
comforting Spirit be always
with you.
All And with your spirit.
Introduction
(May be read using these or other similar
words)
P Jesus reminds us today
that the Gospel is not merely
a preaching to be accepted but
a choice that must be lived in
concrete situations. If we accept
Christ into our lives, then he
must be given priority over our
other loves and commitments.
And his teachings are to be
applied both when convenient
and when inconvenient.
Penitential Act
P Brethren (brothers and
sisters), let us acknowledge our
sins, and so prepare ourselves to
celebrate the sacred mysteries.
(Pause)
All I confess to almighty God
and to you, my brothers and
sisters, that I have greatly sinned,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what
I have failed to do, (strike your
breast) through my fault, through
my f aul t, through my most
grievous fault; therefore I ask
blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the
Angels and Saints, and you, my
brothers and sisters, to pray for
me to the Lord our God.
P May almighty God have
mercy on us, forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
All Amen.
P Lord, have mercy.
All Lord, have mercy.
P Christ, have mercy.
All Christ, have mercy.
P Lord, have mercy.
All Lord, have mercy.
Gloria
All Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to people of
good will. We praise you, we bless
you, we adore you, we glorify you,
we give you thanks for your great
glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O
God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus
Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord
God, Lamb of God, Son of the
Father, you take away the sins of
the world, have mercy on us; you
take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer; you are seated
at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us. For you alone
are the Holy One, you alone are
the Lord, you alone are the Most
High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy
Spirit, in the glory of God the
Father. Amen.
Collect
P Let us pray. (Pause)
O God, by whom we are
redeemed and receive adoption,
look graciously upon your
beloved sons and daughters,
that those who believe in Christ
may receive true freedom and
an everlasting inheritance.
Through our Lord Jesus
Christ, your Son, who lives and
reigns with you in the unity
of the Holy Spirit, one God,
forever and ever.
All Amen.
THE LITURGY
OF THE WORD
First Reading [Wis 9:13-18b]
(Sit)
Human knowledge is limited,
e s p e c i al l y i n r e g ar d t o
discovering Gods will and plan.
Men and women ought to pray
for the Spirit of wisdom, which
is Gods gift.
A reading from the Book of
Wisdom
WHO CAN KNOW God s
counsel, or who can conceive
what the LORD intends? For
the deliberations of mortals
are timid, and unsure are our
plans. For the cor r uptible
body burdens the soul and
the ear then shelter weighs
down the mind that has many
concerns.
And scarce do we guess the
things on earth, and what is
within our grasp we fnd with
diffculty; but when things are
in heaven, who can search
them out? Or who ever knew
your counsel, except you had
given wisdom and sent your
holy spirit from on high? And
thus were the paths of those on
earth made straight.
The word of the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm (Ps 90)
R In every age, O Lord,
you have been our refuge.
1. You turn man back to dust,/
saying, Return, O children of
men./ For a thousand years
in your sight/ are as yesterday,
now that it is past, or as a watch
of the night. (R)
2. You make an end of them in
their sleep;/ the next morning
they are like the changing
grass,/ which at dawn springs
up anew,/ but by evening wilts
and fades. (R)
3. Teach us to number our
days aright,/ that we may gain
wisdom of heart./ Return, O
LORD! How long?/ Have pity on
your servants! (R)
4. Fill us at daybreak with your
kindness,/ that we may shout
for joy and gladness all our
days./ And may the gracious
care of the LORD our God be
ours;/ prosper the work of our
hands for us! Prosper the work
of our hands! (R)
Second Reading (Phlm 9-10,
12-17)
Paul sends back to Philemon
his runaway slave, but asks the
Christian master to treat his
servant as a brother. The salvation
of Christ obliterates the division
between the slave and the free, the
poor and the rich.
A reading from the Letter of
Saint Paul to Philemon

also a prisoner for Christ Jesus,

Onesimus, whose father I have
become in my imprisonment;
I am sending him, that is, my
own heart, back to you.
I should have liked to retain
him for myself, so that he
might serve me on your behalf
in my imprisonment for the
gospel, but I did not want to do
anything without your consent,
so that the good you do might
not be forced but voluntary.
Perhaps this is why he was
away from you for a while,
that you might have him back
forever, no longer as a slave but
more than a slave, a brother,
beloved especially to me, but
even more so to you, as a man
and in the Lord.
So if you regard me as a
partner, welcome him as you
would me.
The Word of the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.
Alleluia [Ps 119:135] (Stand)
All Alleluia, alleluia. Let
your face shine upon your
servant; and teach me your
laws. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel (Lk 14:25-33)
P The Lord be with you.
All And with your spirit.
P A reading from the holy
Gospel according to Luke.
All Glory to you, O Lord.
GREAT CROWDS we r e
traveling with Jesus, and he
turned and addressed them,
If anyone comes to me without
hating his father and mother,
wife and children, brothers and
sisters, and even his own life, he
cannot be my disciple. Whoever
does not carry his own cross
and come after me cannot be
my disciple.
Which of you wishing to
construct a tower does not
frst sit down and calculate the
cost to see if there is enough
for its completion? Otherwise,
after laying the foundation and
fnding himself unable to fnish
the work the onlookers should
laugh at him and say, This one
began to build but did not have
the resources to fnish.
Or what king marching
into battle would not first sit
down and decide whether with
ten thousand troops he can
successfully oppose another
king advancing upon him with
twenty thousand troops? But if
not, while he is still far away, he
will send a delegation to ask for
peace terms.
In the same way, anyone of
you who does not renounce all
his possessions cannot be my
disciple.
The Gospel of the Lord.
All Praise to you, Lord
Jesus Christ.
Homily (Sit)
Profession of Faith (Stand)
All I believe in one God,
the Father almighty, maker of
heaven and earth, of all things
visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus
Christ, the Only Begotten Son
of God, born of the Father
before all ages. God from God,
Light from Light, true God from
true God, begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were
made. For us men and for our
salvation he came down from
heaven,
(At the words that follow, up to
and including and became man,
all bow)

and by the Holy Spirit was
incarnate of the Virgin Mary
and became man.
For our sake he was crucifed
under Pont i us Pi l at e, he
suf fered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third
day in accordance with the
Scriptures. He ascended into
heaven and is seated at the
right hand of the Father. He
will come again in glory to judge
the living and the dead and his
kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life, who
proceeds from the Father and
the Son, who with the Father
and the Son is adored and
glorified, who has spoken
through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic
and apostolic Church. I confess
one Baptism for the forgiveness
of sins and I look forward to the
resurrection of the dead and
the life of the world to come.
Amen.
Prayer of the Faithful
P We want to be faithful
followers of Jesus not only in
words but also in deeds. May
the Lord grant us courage and
perseverance as we pray:
R Lord, be our light and
our strength.
C May the Church, the
community of believers, be
not ashamed of the cross of
Jesus, which is the sublime
expression of Gods power,
wisdom, and love. We pray: (R)
C May our religious and
political leaders be endowed
with the wisdom to know what
is truly good for the people and
the courage and perseverance
to bring their work to fruition.
We pray: (R)
C May those who have taken
the challenge of promoting
t he Gospel val ues be not
discouraged when faced with
adversi ty, antagoni sm, or
outright persecution. We pray:
(R)
C May those who proudly
profess the Cathol i c fai th
but who engage in acts of
corruption, violence, injustice,
and sexual abuses see the
contradiction in their lives and
ask the Lord for the grace to
reform. We pray: (R)
C May we not remai n
nominal Catholics or good-
feeling Catholics, but believers
who are aware of the demands
of the faith and who allow it to
color deeply our daily life. We
pray: (R)
P Lord, we hear your call
but we fear our inconstancy
and weakness. Teach us always
to follow you with courage and
hope.
Through Christ our Lord.
All Amen.

integral faith formation:
A Year of Faith Catechesis
fr. James h. Kroeger, mm

St. Josephine Bakhita (1869-1947) was kidnapped at
age nine by slave traders, beaten until she bled, and sold
five times in the slave markets of Sudan. Finally, she was
bought by an Italian merchant and brought to Italy, where
she received religious instruction, was baptized, and joined
the Canossian Sisters. Written in later life, her first-person
narrative is a remarkable testimony of faith.
Bakhita described her excruciating ordeal of tattooing:My
face was spared, but six patterns were designed on my breasts
and sixty more on my belly and arms. I thought I would die,
especially when salt was poured in the woundsIt was by a
miracle of God I didnt die. He had destined me for better things.
I enjoyed the opportunity [in Italy] to be instructed in the
Christian faith The saintly sisters helped me know God,
whom I had experienced in my heart since childhood
Now at last I knew Him I am defnitely loved and whatever
happens to meI am awaited by this Love. And so my life is
good. A remarkable faith-journey: from slavery to sanctity!
and, by partaking of the sacred
mystery, we may be faithfully
united in mind and heart.
Through Christ our Lord.
All Amen.
