SPECTAcle is the official Volunteer Corps Team of the Department of Speech Communication and Theater Arts headed by the DSCTA Representative. This group, composed only of students from the Department, acts as an arm of DSCTA in promoting its disciplines and in ensuring the growth of its students by forwarding beneficial projects that aim to hone individual skills. For this year, the volunteer team will head the celebration of DSCTA Week by spearheading Speech and Theatre Fest: Retrospect, a series of competitions for majors and non-majors of the department. It aims to: To promote the department within and beyond the college To increase the influence and impact of DSCTA courses by engaging students in the application of the respective disciplines To serve as an avenue for non-majors to hone public speaking skills To celebrate the competence of DSCTA majors in their craft by showcasing their skills to the public To test the majors mastery of their disciplines by setting up an avenue for healthy competition amongst themselves To establish rapport among the students of the department

GUIDELINES: This event is only open to Speech 133 students enrolled for the first semester of academic year 2013-2014. Selected class representatives (chosen via classroom eliminations) would compete for the one round debate. A team captain will be selected by the respective teams. The professor in charge must submit a filled out registration form to the Marketing Team of SPECTAcle on or before the first week of September. Actual competition will take place at C.M. Recto on September 26, 2013 from 4:00pm 7:00pm. UP ID should be presented upon registration. Participants are expected to be at the venue by 3:30pm and will have until 4:15 to arrive. MECHANICS: The debate tournament shall adapt the Modified-Oregon Oxford format. There are 2 sides in this format: the Affirmative and the Negative. The Affirmative proves the validity of the issue or topic called the Proposition while the Negative disproves it. Each team has two speakers and one scribe. A Debate Moderator enforces the rules to ensure the debates smooth conduct. Each speaker shall be tasked to deliver his constructive speech in a minimum of five (5) minutes and a maximum of seven (7) minutes. Unlike other formats of debate, a speaker from the opposite house cannot interrupt the speech to raise a point but instead has to interpolate the speaker after the speech. This shall take five (5) minutes. The rebuttal speeches of the team captains from each side at the end of the debate shall be three (3) minutes long. The flow of speeches would be as follows:
First Affirmative - Constructive Speech (7 minutes) First Negative - Interpellation of the first affirmative Speaker (5 minutes) First Negative - Constructive Speech (7 minutes) First Affirmative - Interpellation of the first negative speaker (5 minutes) Second Affirmative - Constructive Speech (7 minutes) Second Negative - Interpellation of the second affirmative (5 minutes) Second Negative Constructive (7 minutes) Second Affirmative - Interpellation of the second negative (5 minutes) Third Affirmative - Constructive Speech (7 minutes) Third Negative - Interpellation of the third affirmative (5 minutes) Third Negative - Constructive Speech (7 minutes) Third Affirmative - Interpellation of the third negative (5 minutes) Rebuttal of the Team Captain of the Negative Side (3 minutes) Rebuttal of the Team Captain of the Affirmative Side (3 minutes)
