Georgia Tech Midline Option

Al “Buzz” Preston
Wide Receiver Coach
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

• Play is designed to be given to B, but it depends on the 3 technique

• If 3 technique crashes in hard the QB pulls the ball and carries out the option
• Great play for when the 3 technique is hard to block
• Playside Tackle dips shoulder down to rip through to the next level
• BS OL scoops

Georgia Tech Two Way Option
Al “Buzz” Preston
Wide Receiver Coach
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

• B gets frontside backer

• Looks just like the triple option but the QB never gives it to B
• Make sure QB doesn’t give up too much depth
• B needs to run through the backer and not break down to block him
• Cadence is “Ready, Set, Hike” – A back is in motion on “Ready”
• When drilling this make the pitch read attack at all different angles
• Start all drills going to the QB’s non-dominant hand
• BS OL scoops

Georgia Tech Triple Option
Al “Buzz” Preston
Wide Receiver Coach
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

• Center needs to be the best lineman – has to be quick

• Guards need to be big & strong and able to pull
• Tackles are quick & linear with good feet
• The line splits are three feet
• The wide receivers line up on the numbers
• Wingbacks or A Backs are fast and shifty and line up in a one foot by one foot ratio from
the tackles
• Fullback or B Back is more of a downhill runner and lines up in a 3 point stance with his
heels 5 yards from the ball

• B back aims at inside hip of the 3 technique

• PST has a slight angle step to combo instead of a lateral step
• Backside OL scoops
• If backside DE crashes in hard, reverse to him
• Playside A back has open step to see the D & then arc upfield to block the first threat
between the corner and the safety
• Backside A back opens up & runs his option path through the point where the B back
was lined up
• If the pitch read makes even on step of depth before closing in it is an automatic give to
the B back
• QB attacks the inside shoulder of the option read to keep him pinched in
Triple Option Play Action

• When running a fake to the left, a right handed QB fakes to B back then does a left
handed drop then flips to a right handed set at the end of his drop
• Usually a 3-step drop
• 5-step drop for the verticals off of PA
• Open & throw on X-Hit
