The ratio of C atoms and H atoms in an alkane is represented by the general formula,
CnH2n+2 , where n represent the number of C atoms and 2n+2 represent the number of
H atoms.
Examples:
n = 2 → C2H6
n = 6 → C6H14
Because alkanes are the group of compound that have the similar properties and also
have the same general formula, then alkanes are classified into homologous series, so
that the naming of alkanes is n-ane.
1 CH4 Methane
2 C2H6 Ethane
3 C3H8 Propane
4 C4H10 Butane
5 C5H12 Pentane
6 C6H14 Hexane
7 C7H16 Heptane
8 C8H18 Oktane
9 C9H20 Nonane
10 C10H22 Dekane
2. C atoms on the main chain are given by the ordering number started from
C atom which nearest to the branch.
3. The name of alkane compound is the number of branch C atom + the name
of alkyl group (branch) + the name of alkane.
Example:
CH3
CH3 CH3
2,2,3-trimethylhexane
The uses of alkanes compounds in everyday life, among other are as fuel, lubricating
oil, the major material for petrochemical industries, organic solvent, the major
material for alcohol and vinegar and other. Alkanes compounds generally are obtained
from the petroleum and natural gas manufactures.
