1 SCOPE
The program computes the properties of bi-symmetrical elementary welded or rolled steel sections.
Properties include
area,
elastic bending inertia and moduli,
plastic moduli,
torsional and warping inertia.
Sections may either be described in terms of element sizes and thickness (flange, web) or specified as hot-rolled
section. This program contains a database of over 1200 sections complying with the following standards
European (IPE-A, IPE, IPE-O, IPN, HEA, HEB, HEM, HEAA, HE, HL, HD, HP),
British (UB, UC, RSJ, UBP)
American (WF, S, M, HP) including a few specific Canadian wide-flange sections,
Japanese (WJs),
Australian (UB, UC, TFB, UBP),
Indian (ISWB, ISMB, ISLB, ISHB, ISJB, ISMC, ISLC, ISJC),
Southern African,
Russian (?, ? , ? , ? ? a n d ? ? shapes).
This routine can be used on its own, but is more generally called as a subroutine for member code check programs
in accordance with international Rules and Regulations (AISC, API, NORSOK, BS, CM66, etc..)
KEYWORDS

2 ASSUMPTIONS AND METHODOLOGY

The properties of the sections relate to a purely elastic material behaviour.
The system of axes is such that
x-axis is normal to the plan of the cross-section,
y-axis corresponds to the axis of major inertia (parallel to the flanges),
z-axis corresponds to the axis of minor inertia (parallel to the web).

2.1 Elementary Sections

The properties of the following elementary sections derived from Ref./ 33/ are used to compute the exact
characteristics of rolled beam sections when root radius and miscellaneous rounding are included.
The local reference system of sections involving circles is as follows:
origin at the center of the circle,
v-axis pointing towards the middle of the circular arch, separating two equal sectors having the same
subtended angle a.

2.2 I-Beams with Parallel Flanges

An I-beam with parallel flanges is completely defined by
the width b and thickness e of its flanges,
its overall height H and the thickness a of its web
the root radius r at the junction between flange and web.

2.2.3 Additional Properties

The program also computes some dimensional characteristics which pertain to specific codes
the stiff bearing length of the flange defined in ENV 1993 1-1 5.7.2 (Ref./ 19/) corresponds to a 45 deg
diffusion of the stress in the plan of the web through the thickness of the flange tangent to the root radius,
hence

s s = 2e + a + 2 2 2 r
-

[12]

the effective radius of gyration rT of a doubly symmetrical I-section with respect to lateral/torsional buckling
about its major axis is defined in AISC Rules (Ref./1/) as

rT =

2.3 I-Beams with Sloping Flanges

An I-beam with sloping flanges is completely defined by
the flange width b and thickness e at mid width of a half-flange,
its overall height H and the thickness a of its web,
the root radius r at the junction between flange and web,
the toe radius r1 at the flange edges,
the slope tan of the inner face of the flanges.

2.3.1 Axial and Bending Properties

The presence of rounding at angles different from 90 deg complicates somewhat the parametric formulae for the
properties of an I section with sloping flanges. These properties can nevertheless be computed exactly from the
combination of some of the elementary sections described in Section 2.1. A typical decomposition is shown
below

Figure 2-6 Decomposition of an I-Shape With Sloping Flanges [from Ref./14/]

2.3.2 Torsional Properties

The torsional inertia of an I-beam with sloping flanges is computed in accordance with the formulae of Ref./16/.
The following parameters are developed for sections

The figure for 3 is actually valid for flange slopes equal to 1/6. For other slopes it may linearly interpolated
between 3 and 1 as given above for parallel-sided flanges.
The torsional inertia is eventually equal to

where h f represents the distance between the CoGs of the upper and lower flanges, and IfZ their individual bending
inertia with respect to the weak axis Z computed from the decomposition of Section 2.3.1.

2.4 Box
A box consisting of one central and two side webs is defined by
the width b and thickness e of its flanges,
its overall height H and the thickness a of the central web,
the thickness s of the side webs and the distance d between their mid-thickness
the root radii r and r at the connection flange to central web.

2.4.1 Axial and Bending Properties

The axial and bending properties are readily derived from those of an I-section

2.4.2 Torsional Properties

The torsional properties of boxes are several orders of magnitude superior to those of an open I-section

2.5 Standard Hot-Rolled Sections

The following Tables provide the list of hot-rolled sections complying with various national standards that are
recognized by this program.
The User is advised to consult the relevant catalogs of suppliers for more information regarding dimensional data.
As the same geometrical section may be called diversely under different standards, a hierarchical order is
established, namely European, British, American, Japanese, Australian, Indian, South-African and Russian, which
reflects the availability of the same section in Continental Europe under each specific standard.
Non-standard sections that are genuine to one manufacturer in particular are given lower hierarchical ranking.

2.5.1.1 HE Column Sections

Figure 2-9 European HE Section [from Ref./5/]

The sizes of European HE sections defined in accordance with Euronorm 53-62 have the following characteristics
the nominal height of the section is equal to the overall true height of the corresponding HEB section,
the distance between inner flanges of HEA, HEB and HEM having the same nominal height is identical,
the flange width is equal to the nominal height (in mm) for HEs less than 300, and is limited to 300mm for
higher beams.

2.5.1.2.4 IPNs
IPN sections with sloping flanges are defined in accordance with DIN 1025-1 and NF-A-45-209 Specifications.
They are characterized by
a flange slope equal to 14%,
a root radius (r1 on Figure 2-11 equal to the web thickness).
The average thickness e is measured at the middle of the half-flange (at the distance b/4 from the free edge).

2.5.1.3.2 HE Sections
This list regroups all non-standard HE sections (excluding extra-light HEAAs) which are not normalized as either
HEAs, HEBs, HEMs and are hence all identified here as HE H W (height weight).

Figure 2-12 HE Section [from Ref./5/]

All the sections are derived from the EUROPROFIL- ARBED Catalog (Ref./5/) in which the colour of the
nominal weight figure refers to the respective edition

2.5.3 American Sections

2.5.3.1 Wide Flange Sections
North American (US and Canada) wide flange sections are identified by their nominal overall height, width and
weight (metric)
W H B W.

Figure 2-20 American Wide Flange W Shape [from Ref./5/]

Because of the considerable variety of these profiles, their provenance is identified by the colour in which their
nominal weight is shown in the following Tables.

AISC Steel Construction Manual (Ref./1/),

AISC Steel Rehabilitation Guide (Ref./12/),
AISC W Shapes Availability (Ref./2/); sizes estimated by reference to similar shapes,
CISC W Shapes Availability (Ref./ 14/); see Refs./5/ and /26/ for sizes,
CISC Handbook (Ref./13/) (with a few root radii from Ref./44/),
CORUS Catalog (Ref./17/),
SKYLINE Steel Catalog (Ref./ 31/),
BRITISH STEEL Construction Manual On-Line (Ref./ 11/).

The following Tables list in particular a few heavy jumbo W-shapes that may have been used in the past but are
no longer produced. Their properties can hence be compared to those of existent shapes in the case of revamping
of older installations.

2.5.3.2 Standard S-Shapes

The sizes of standard American S-shapes with sloping

flanges comply with Spec. ASTM A6/A6M (Ref./4/).
S shapes are characterized by a inner flange slope equal
to 1/6.
The average thickness e is measured at the middle of
the clear half-flange at the distance(b-a)/4 from the free
edge.

2.5.3.3 M Shapes
The letter M designates shapes that cannot be classified as W, HP or S shapes and are only available from a
limited number of producers, or are infrequently rolled.
Since the slope on their inner flange surfaces may vary for each producer, this program assumes that the profile
has parallel flanges with constant thickness equal to the average thickness.

2.5.5 Australian Sections

Standard Australian sections are essentially equivalent to their British counterpart from which they may differ by
no more than a tenth of a millimeter.
A few specific sections are however produced locally.
Australian parallel flange sections are identified by their overall height and weight (metric) as either
UBA H W (universal beams),
UCA H W (universal columns).
where the letter A is used in this program to distinguish them from their British counterpart.
The dimensions in the metric system of all Australian shapes listed in the Tables below are obtained from the
ONESTEEL Catalog (Ref./29/).

Standard parallel flange Southern-African sections are identical to their British UB counterpart (though only
embracing a narrower range), and to a lesser extent include also small European IPEs or IPAs.
The only few specific sections listed in the Table below consist of tapered flange I-shapes recognized in this
program as TSA. The sizes are obtained from the SAISC spreadsheet (Ref./32/) plus two additions from Ref./ 6/.

2.5.7 Indian Sections

The dimensions of Indian shapes comply with Ref./22/ in terms of flange and web sizes.
The root radius is approximated by comparison to international profiles having similar sizes in order to best match
the area and elastic modulus of the section shown in the Tables of Ref./23/.

2.7 Characteristic Buckling Resistance

2.7.1 Buckling Curve
The characteristic buckling resistance of a compression member is given by most codes (NPD, DnV, NS) as a
function of the reduced slenderness = F / E , where E is the elastic buckling resistance for the buckling
mode under consideration.
A compression member is defined as "stocky" if the reduced slenderness with respect to the critical column
buckling mode is less than 0.2.
The non-dimensional expression of the buckling curves is given by Ayrton-Perrys formula
2
cr 1 + ( 0 ) +
=
F

[1 + ( ) + ]

2 2

2 2

[17]

where 0 =0.2 for beam sections.

2.7.2 Cross-Section Types

The value of the coefficient depends on the type of cross-section and its fabrication procedure.
The three most common types (A, B and C) refer to the following cross-sections
Section

tubes, hollow sections
rolled I and H profiles
welded I and H profiles
rolled I and H profiles
stress-relieved I and H profiles
box sections

4 OPERATING LIMITS AND WARNINGS

4.1 Selection of Standard Shapes
In the event that nominal sizes are specified at random by the User, the program always selects the standard shape
with sizes equal or lesser that best suit the description.
W 380 400 173
W 356 368 162

For example an American wide flange specified as

will automatically be corrected by the program to

4.2 Interface with GTSTRUDL

This routine generates as file SECELEM.GTS the section properties of I-beams exclusively (rolled or welded) in
a format compatible with the GTTABLE pre-processor to the mainframe program GTSTRUDL.
Under these circumstances the dimensions of the section in SECELEM must imperatively be input in meters, in
order that the GTTABLE output is provided in centimeters.
The format of the GTTABLE output is as follows
