General
The RS charger/inverter modules can be used, together with their battery packs, to convert a wide range of single and twin fluorescent luminaires and compact fluorescent luminaires into emergency lighting units. The module and battery pack can be mounted inside existing luminaires or, where inside temperatures and dimensions of the fitting restrict this, in a remote mounting box (RS stock no. 568-118), which may be positioned away from the luminaire, to a maximum distance of 0.5m. The box comes complete with four pre-drilled 20mm conduit entries and four 5mm clearance holes for mounting purposes. A red led is supplied with the module for fitting to the luminaire or box, giving a visual indication of battery charging. The battery pack supplied provides a three-hour emergency light period, depending on the state of charge and battery condition.

Description
The RS conversion kit comprises of a charger/inverter unit, and a two-piece battery pack and polarised plug and socket interconnection. The conversion module houses a constant current battery charger, with charge indication and solid state inverter circuitry controlled by a low battery voltage disconnect circuit, designed to prevent deep discharge of the battery pack. Changeover to emergency mode is achieved by a voltage sensitive internal relay controlled by the permanent mains supply. This ensures rapid switching in the event of partial or momentary failure of the general lighting supply. The two-piece battery pack consists of nickel cadmium cells suitable for high temperatures, which are charged continuously by the conversion unit and are therefore kept at full charge in readiness for an emergency situation. Healthy charging is shown by a red led indicator. In the event of a mains failure the unit automatically connects the battery to the fitting and provides a three-hour duration emergency light output. When the mains supply is restored the battery pack is disconnected and the battery automatically recharges over a maximum 24-hour period.
Mounting
The module and battery pack may be mounted within existing luminaires, however the remote mounting box should be used where any of the following conditions exist. a) A twin lamp or 1200mm luminaire is to be converted. b) The luminaire internal temperature is likely to exceed 50C. Note: Some single semi resonant and quick start fittings have internal space restrictions. If these luminaires are to be converted then the remote mounting box should be used.

* The ballast lumen factors shown above in Table 1 refers to the light output by the fluorescent tube on emergency duty.
For example. An 1800mm 70 watt tube has a ballast lumen factor of 0.12 which means that 12% of the normal running lumens are available for emergency lighting. As the running lumens of this lamp is 5700 (based on 2000 hr output) the light output on emergency duty will be 5700 0.12 = 684 lumens. Below are typical 1000 hr and 2000 hr lumen outputs for the RS range of T8 (1in) white krypton-filled fluorescent tubes. T12 (11/2in) argon filled white tube data is shown in brackets ([ ]) ()Table 2). Typical lumen outputs
