Learning Objectives: Analysing the electrolysis of aqueous solution.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of the class, students should be able to: i. Identify cations and anions in an aqueous solution ii. Identify cations and anions that are selectively discharge based on position of ion in electrochemical series iii. Write half equations for the discharge of ions at the anode and the cathode and the overall equation iv. Write the electrochemical series

Content: i. Electrolytic cell ii. Electrolysis of aqueous solution iii. Electrochemical series

Students Prior Knowledge: Students have learnt about electrolysis of molten compound

Noble Values: Responsibility, cooperation, appreciating

Materials: Mahjung paper, colourful paper and worksheet.

Set Induction (5 minutes): Teacher shows salt and asks students a few question. What is this? if students cannot answer, teacher asks students to try the salt. Can you give the chemical name for this salt? What are the state of the salt? If I dissolve the salt into water, what will happen?

After that, teacher dissolves the salt into water and explain to students that when solid is dissolved into water, it will form an aqueous solution. Teacher introduce the topic that will be learn electrolysis of aqueous solution.

Teaching Materials

Step 1 (10 minutes)

Electrolytic cell

Teacher shows the diagram of simple electrolytic cell and ask students to label the diagram by using the colourful paper that is given to each group.

Mahjung paper Colourful paper

Step 2 (30 minutes)

Electrolysis of Aqueous Sodium Chloride, (NaCl)

Teacher asks students what are the ions present in the solution.

Mahjung paper Worksheet

Teacher asks students to stick the ions that will move to anode and cathode. Teacher asks students which ion that will be selectively discharge at anode and cathode.

Electrochemical series chart

Teacher state that there are 3 factors that will determine the selective discharge of ions at the electrode

Position of ions in the electrochemical series Concentration of ions in the solution Types of electrode use

Teacher only discuss the first factor which is position of ions in the electrochemical series and the other factors will be discussed on next class.

Teacher shows to the students the electrochemical series and explain to them the ions are arranged based on their electropositivity or the tendency of elements to discharge. Teacher tells to students that the lower the position of ion in the electrochemical series, the higher tendency of the ions to discharge

Teacher discuss the half equation at both electrode and the overall equation.

Half equation Anode: 4 OH + 2 H2O + O2 + 4e Cathode: 2H + 2e H2 Overall equation: 4 OH + 4 H 2 H2O + O2 + 2 H2 Students need to complete the worksheet during discussion.

Step 3 ( 20 minutes)

Electrochemical series

Teacher divides the students into 6 groups and asks them to try doing the mnemonic to remember the electrochemical series. Students need to write the mnemonic in the whiteboard.

Mahjung paper

Teacher shows example of the mnemonic and tells students that they can choose which mnemonic they want to remember.

Evaluation (10 minutes): Teacher asks students to work on the practice questions given in printed worksheet. Electrolysis of Aqueous Copper (II) Sulphate, (CuSO4). Students are called to give their answers.

Conclusion (5 minutes): Teacher draw mind map on the whiteboard and asks students a few question.

Ions that will be selectively discharge are the ions that is located at the lower position in the electrochemical series

4 ions present 2 from dissociation of salt 2 from dissociation of water

ELECTROLYSIS OF AQUEOUS SOLUTION

Process occur at Anode: donate electron Cathode: accept electron

Assignments: Students need to complete the practice questions given in printed worksheets. Electrolysis of Aqueous Potassium Iodide, (KI) and Aqueous Argentum Nitrate, (AgN03) Remark:
