Jun 06, 2010; 11:36pm How to calculate strain energy release Reply rate | Threaded using Cohesive | More zone elements. Hello, I am simulating crack propagation in composite under tensile load.I want to use cohesive zone model to find out the energy release rate of specimen. As far as I know I can use J integral and VCCT method to find out energy release rate. But I have used these methods to find out energy release rate under different applied forces.Does ABAQUS have any feature or method to give energy release rate by using Cohesive elements. How can I use cohesive zone model to predict the crack initiation and crack growth. Please guide me in above matter. Please accept my personal best regards. HI, the fastest way i know, is to create a part with shell shape and planner type attributes in ABAQUS/CAE and then mesh the part in the way you want. In the mesh module, you need to create an orphan mesh from the shell plate your already meshed (From the main menu, select mesh then create mesh part). This will create new part with nodes and elements definition. You could then create 3 solid elements from this shell element by editing the mesh (From the main menu, select mesh then edit. in the edit mesh window selech mesh category and Offset to create solid layers. select all the elements and give zero thickness). You need to create a cohesive material and section and then assign this section to the new part. yours Fahad --- In [hidden email], <zyc8910@...> wrote: > > Hello everyone, > Because i want to use zero thickness cohesive element to simulate the crack between Element interface, is it possible to generate this kind of cohesive element, and if it is possible, how i can do it? Jun 07, 2010; 3:32pm Re: How to generate the Cohesive element Reply | between Threaded Element | More interface hello Fahad, Thank you very much for your kindly reply. It seems that your method for producing the cohesive element is suit for 3D condition(two 3D body interface), it is a very good method. But now, my initial workpiece is 2D condition, it also means that the mesh I want to operate is 2D, i want to insert the zero cohesive element(likes a line) to the 2D mesh interface. Is it possible? thank you very much Sincerely, Redstone

Unless you need to use some feature associated with the cohesive elements, I would recommend using cohesive contact, which doesn't require the generation of any special elements. The user's manual covers different techniques for generating cohesive elements.

When using cohesive elements you need to specify the damage initiation and evolution criteria and constants -- the elements can't be used to

Hi Redstone, Creating a 2-D mesh is no different than creating 3D mesh. When you started building your model, you must have selected 2D option. In order to create zero thickness cohesive element, you need to collapse the nodes on to each other. Firstly, insert a layer cohesive element mesh of a finite thickness e.g. 5mm or so. Then, go to modify mesh and project the nodes of one side of cohesive element onto the opposite face. Hope this makes sense. One thing to consider is that zero thickness cohesive elements are just an approximation. It does not really matter what thickness you have got. But, what is crucial is you understand how STIFFNESS IS SCALED. Therefore, make sure you read the help manual thoroughly, otherwise you will get unrealistic results. Hope this helps. Let me know if it works.
