About your double barrelled gun

Double-barrelled shotguns and made in two styles, overand-under, so called because the barrels are stacked one on top of the other, and side-by-side, with the barrels lying one next to the other. Two basic mechanisms exist for double-barrelled shotguns. Boxlocks, where the working parts are housed inside the frame of the gun, and sidelocks, where the working parts are mounted on plates let into each side of the frame. Sidelock guns tend to be more expensive due to the amount of precision workmanship that goes into fitting the mechanism into the stock and the engraving which decorates the lockplates. This workmanship is what makes these guns beautiful, finely operating shotguns. There are two basic mechanisms for removing cartridges from shotguns: non-ejector and ejector. In a non-ejector shotgun, the cartridge head is lifted partially clear of the chamber for removal by hand, regardless of whether the gun has been fired. In ejector shotguns, the fired cartridge is kicked out of the chamber by a spring loaded mechanism. Triggers come in three types: double, single non-selective and single selective. With double triggers, each trigger is assigned to one barrel. With a non-selective single trigger, one trigger fires each barrel in a fixed sequence (right / left with side-by-sides and bottom / top in over-and-unders). In the case of a single selective trigger, the firing sequence can be set by the user, normally by means of a selector button somewhere on the action.

Basic rules of firearms safety

1 - Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. 2 - Be sure the firearm is unloaded when not in use and store the firearm and ammunition separately. 3 - Do not rely on your firearms safety catch. Treat your firearm as if it can be fired at any time. 4 - Always ensure you have a clear view of your target and what is beyond it. 5 - Use only the correct ammunition for your firearm. Using improper or incorrect ammunition can destroy a gun and cause serious personal injury. 6 - Check that the barrel is clear of obstructions before firing. Even a slight amount of snow, mud or lubricating oil or grease can cause dangerously increased pressures. 7 - If your gun fails to fire when the trigger is pulled, handle it with care. Unload the misfired cartridge, keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, and dispose of the cartridge in a safe manner. 8 - Be sure to wear eye and ear protection. 9 - Do not interfere with the trigger, safety or other parts of your firearm and have the firearm periodically serviced by a qualified professional.

Assembly
1 - Clean dirt and excess oil from gun especially in the breech area and barrel interior and ends. 2 - Make sure there are no cartridges in the chamber; remove the forend by pulling on the forend release catch or by pushing the forend release button in; the forend will separate from the barrel by allowing the nose of the forend to drop and moving it forward and away from the barrels. (photo 1) 3 - Attach barrels to action by grasping the grip of the stock with right hand and placing the stock under right arm. With your right thumb move the top lever to the right. Now hold the barrels with your free hand and slide the barrels through the slot in the action with the barrel nose pointing down, until the hinge notch engages with the hinge pin. (photo 2) 4 - Keeping the hinge pin notch engaged with the hinge pin, lift the nose of the barrels until the barrels close. Caution: if as you attempt to (photo 1)

close the gun the barrels bind or do not seem to fit, then hinge pin and notch are not engaged. DO NOT FORCE, try again. Release the top lever and barrels will be locked in place. 5 - Replace the forend on the gun by sliding the rear of the forend into the barrel at the same angle in which you removed it; the round rear of the forend should match the round front of the receiver, when it does, lift the nose of the forend until it engages with the barrels with an audible click, if the forend release latch protrudes after the click gently push it in place. (photo 3)

Loading and operating your shotgun

1 - Slide the safety, located on the tang of the receiver, towards the butt of the gun into the safe position. 2 - Check bores for obstructions, dirt and excess oil. Caution: even the smallest obstruction can increase barrel pressure enough to explode. This may result in serious injury to shooter and others in the vicinity: Insert the shells into chamber or chambers you plan to fire. Caution: Make sure the shells are of the proper gauge and chamber length for your gun. 3 - When contemplating firing your gun be sure of the target, background and the location of persons who have accompanied you or may be occupying areas in your vicinity. Pick your target, release the safety by sliding it forward with your thumb and squeeze the trigger with your forefinger. 4 - Push the top lever to right, open the gun. Fired shells will be ejected and unfired shells will be elevated above chamber on models with automatic selective ejectors.

2 - Separate the barrels from the receiver by holding the stock of the gun in your right hand and the barrels in your left. Push the top lever to the right with your thumb. Allow the nose of the barrels to drop and lift the barrels upward out of the receiver. 3 - The gun can now be cleaned and the forend should be reattached to the barrel for storage.

Lock plate removal and maintenance

Should your AYA sidelock have a hand detachable lever on the left lockplate, follow these directions for lock removal. 1 - Make certain gun is unloaded. 2 - Open and re-close gun to make sure that it is cocked. 3 - Turn hand-detaching lever on left lock counterclockwise until it is free of right lock, then gently push on it until right lockplate pops free of the action. 4 - Remove hand detaching lever from left lockplate. 5 - Insert hand detaching lever through hole that is now visible in stock on right side where lockplate has been removed and gently push left lockplate free of action. Lock replacement. 1 - Be sure safety is set on safe, hammers are cocked and the action is closed. 2 - Insert locks carefully. 3 - When both locks are in place, replace hand detaching

Disassembly
1 - Make sure chambers are empty. Close the gun. Place the gun butt on your thigh and remove forend by pulling the forend release latch or pressing the forend release button. While pulling the nose of the forend away from the barrels slide forend forward until separated from the barrels.

lever, turning it clockwise until flush with the surface of the right lockplate. When correctly tightened, the point of hand detachable lever should be pointing in the same direction as the barrels.

Gun maintenance
When cleaning and maintaining your firearm, any reputable cleaning and lubricating tools and agents designed for use on firearms will work fine if used properly. Always remember, as previously pointed out in the Firearms Safety section of this booklet, not to leave excess oil or grease in the barrels as this can lead to excessive pressure when firing the gun. Important lubrication points on your break open AYA are the underlugs (the notched protusions on the underside of the barrels, also known as chopper lumps) the knuckle (the area where the action meets the forend) and the sidelock mechanism. Be sure not to leave excessive oil in the sidelock area as this will, over time, impart weakness to the wood of the stock. Other cleaning and lubrications, wich require disassembly of the gun should be performed only by an experienced, authorised gunsmith.
