School Speech Finals

Well done to the students from each team who made it into the school speech finals last Friday. The talent on show was of a very high standard. Students were asked to present a three minute speech on the subject of Choices. The finalists included: Connar Brunton, Arnika Ruegg, Eva Simmonds, Mark Haddock, Caitlin Li Calsi, Chelsea Haakma, Mackenzie Higham, Vincent Green, Zoe Williams and Jack Devane. Each student spoke extremely well, convincing the audience of their point of view and exhibited a variety of well rehearsed speech devices to get their message across. The judges had a very difficult task to choose the top three speakers. Congratulations to Jack Devane who placed first, Chelsea Haakma, who placed second and joint third place was awarded to Connar Brunton and Caitlin Li Calsi. Thanks to our wonderful judges Jocelyn Mitchell, Jane Thomas and Katie Murrell. Thank you also to the parents who came along to watch the speech finals. Chelsea, Connar and Caitlin went on to compete in the Rotary speech competition on Monday night where Caitlin was presented with the Rotary cup for coming first in this competition. Well done Caitlin, Connar and Chelsea for an amazing performance.

ASB Spelling Bee

Last week the following MIS students were selected to go to the Great Waikato Spelling Bee on Saturday at the Sacred Hearts Girls College in Hamilton: Mark Haddock (Yr. 8), Kristie Chong (Yr. 7), Ruby Stevens (Yr. 7), Ethan OSullivan (Yr. 7), Sarah Jopson (Yr. 8) and Bobby Howie (yr.8) who, unfortunately, wasnt able to make it on the day. When we arrived we were given a number to wear and a muesli bar in case we got hungry. The competition began and the Year 7s and Year 8s were split up. The year 8s went two rows at a time to complete a written test where they were given 20 words to spell (10 from a list they had already been given to learn and 10 from a dictionary) before returning to the hall to wait.

Meanwhile the Year 7s were being taken row by row up on stage to spell a word (also taken from their practised lists) to three judges in front of the stage. After all the Year 8s had taken their written test and all the Year 7s had spelt their words they swapped roles.

When this was done all the students were given points, one for every word spelt right in the written test and three points for getting your word right on stage with a tally to reach a total possible score of 23. They then had a final round on stage made up of all the students who scored 20 points or higher and students took turns spelling a word out loud given to them from the dictionary until there was only one Year 7 and Year 8 left. From our school, the only person who made the final stage was Ethan OSullivan who made it to the third round. The winners were given $100 in an A.S.B. account and a medal and the runners up got $50. The school with the highest combined score for Year 7 & 8 won a trophy. Report by Ethan O'Sullivan

On 26th of August a group of 40 students represented Morrinsville Intermediate School at the annual Coast to Coast Sports Camp. It all started with a waiata from our school Kapa Haka. Day 1 at camp kicked off with cross country. Our team put their best foot forward as they ran a 3km run around the campus. They placed 2nd overall in the teams event. Next up, was swimming; the team was great in the water and we finished with many individual placings including 3rd in the team relay. To top off the day we won the kayaking and the shooting. Many other sporting codes were played over the next two days including netball, rugby, basketball, volleyball, hockey, mixed touch, softball, soccer, wall ball, tennis, chess, draughts, shooting, archery, croquet and petanque. We experienced highs and lows which brought us together as a team. Thursday was semi-finals and finals day, and we did well making finals in most of the major sports codes. We finished up winning the shooting, girls table tennis, petanque, tennis, croquet and kayaking. And we were runners-up in cross country, boys volleyball, boys basketball, boys table tennis, golf, bowls, scramball and quality living. On Thursday night it was chant night! We were all a bit nervous but stayed strong for the performance of our lives. After a tiring and exciting week full of many highlights, we headed back to school to tell many stories about sports camp. Thanks to Mrs Taylor for all the behind the scenes organisation leading up to camp. Thanks to Mr Higgins and Mr Hume, who were the teachers in charge at camp and ensured the students were at the right sport at the right time and gave us heaps of support. We would also like to thank all the parents that provided transport to and from camp. Special thanks must also go to Ian Hauraki, Wayne Green, Sara Hutchings, Kirsty McCartney and Adele Alsemgeest for giving up their time to look after all us crazy kids throughout the week. Without the help of these parents and teachers, our week away at camp would not have been possible. So Year 7s make sure you take hold of all the sporting opportunities that come your way if you have goals of experiencing this amazing camp next year!! Report by Emele and Connar.

The Aranui Disco is the last disco for 2013! It is on Wednesday 25th September from 7.00pm to 9.00pm. The theme will be Masquerade. Students must receive an invitation from school to be able to purchase a ticket, which will be $3.00 each. Students with excessive demerit points for term three will not receive an invitation as part of our Choices programme. Tickets will be on sale before school and at interval in the foyer next week. Food and drinks will be available for purchase at the disco. No child will leave the hall during the time of the disco. Children must be collected from the school hall by an adult at 9.00pm.
