Case Analysis 6. The Technical Products Company was formed to manufacture new invention with the trade mark of Freechest. At that time, the company was proceeding on a patent pending -basis. Although completely new, the Freechest was a' comparatively simple article. Basically, it used the cold provided by the cooling unit of any refrigerator to allow. Older model refrigerators too have some freezing units. Below freezing temperatures were obtained by the circulation of cold air between two walls of aluminum. No motor was necessary as the cooling unit of the refrigerator did the work once the portable chest was inserted adjacent to the freezing coil, this insertion could be made by anyone. It was planned to produce Freechests in several sizes, so that they would fit the different sizes and types of refrigerators then on the market. The Freechest could be placed in the refrigerator with ease; no tools or component of any sort were required. When the unit was no longer required, it would be removed until the housewife needed it again. The Freechest has been developed to meet the specific needs for home freezing units that had followed the increased use of frozen foods. There is also increased emphasis that has been placed on economies that could be obtained by buying meat and other items in advance use when prices are lower. New model refrigerators placed great emphasis on the convenience of the Freezer units that they contained. With the addition of the Freechest, older model refrigerators without freezer units were sold at about Rs. 2000/below the price of those that contained freezer units. Freechests could also be used in these models. It was expected, however, that most new refrigerators would be sold with freezer units, and that the primary market would consist of owners of older model refrigerators. The Freechest was the new company's most important product. As the Freechest market was satisfied, other -products not related to the refrigeration were to be substituted. The original plans called for intensive distribution on the northern zone with the possible licensing of other manufacturers in other parts of the county. Total cost, including labor, material, and overhead, amounted to approximately Rs. 40/- for each unit. When volume approached five hundred or more per week, costs would be reduced to Rs. 35/- per unit. These were manufacturing costs and did not include sales expenses and advertising. The sales manager was undecided about pricing and. method of distribution. He felt that the item was too small to be of interest to refrigerator distributors, but that refrigerator servicemen would be interested in handling the Freechest because it would create opportunities to obtain repair and overhaul jobs on older refrigerators. The case of explaining and installing Freechests led to sales manager to consider also the use of coupon advertisements in response to which salesman would call on individuals who had shown interest. Questions : A) B) What should have been the retail price of Freechests and how should they have been marketed? What was the likelihood of success of the enterprise?
