2013 CITY COUNCIL HUMAN RIGHTS QUESTIONNAIRE

1. Many in the United States think of international affairs when they think of human rights. Our work emphasizes the applicability of the human rights framework here in the United States. Please share your thoughts on the domestic applicability of human rights, and discuss why human rights are important to you in the context of New York City and the City Council. As a City Council Member, I will see to it that every human be given the rights of good decent housing, full employment (a job for every adult who wants a job), fair wages, fair taxes, good decent healthcare 100% free-ofcharge, free public colleges, improve the quality of education for the children, free childcare for all 7AM-7PM, social justice, the implementation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as Law & more. See milesforcouncil.wordpress.com for more info. 2. How have you used current or previous professional positions to advance human rights? As a community activist, I am fighting tirelessly for a clean environment, social justice, a good economy for all, human rights, the elimination of cancer (i.e. the Cancer Elimination Act), better health, longer life, Medicaid for All, 100% free-of-charge healthcare for 100% of the people 100% of the time, free childcare centers at every elementary school, improving the quality of education for the children, free public colleges, animal rights, a guaranteed minimum standard of living, fair taxes, sales tax on Wall Street too, a $50,000 income tax standard deduction, stop stop and frisk, end endless war, restore the Bill of Rights & more. See milesforcouncil.wordpress.com for more info & for details on how you can pitch in & help out to make a clean environment, social justice & a good economy for all happen. 3. What will your top 3 legislative priorities be in your first term as Council Member? 1. Clean environment 2. Social justice 3. A good economy for all. 4. What will your top 3 budget priorities be in your first term as Council Member? 1. Clean environment 2. Social justice

3. A good economy for all. 5. Do you plan to use participatory budgeting to allocate your discretionary funds? Why or why not? Eliminating government pork is the best way to go. If taxpayers want their money to go to particular organizations then the taxpayers should make that decision. 6. Please provide examples of recent legislation in Council that you believe promotes human rights. There is no legislation from New York City Council Members that significantly promotes human rights. They serve themselves and their corporate masters. 7. Legislation is only one of many ways in which Council Members can work to advance human rights. What ways other than through legislation will you advance the human rights of New Yorkers as a City Council Member? Court actions, ballot initiatives, recruiting good candidates, pitching in and helping out good candidates, encouraging the media to report on bad things (e.g. bad bills, bad budget decisions and bad oversight) by bad politicians, shine a light on bad things and encourage voters in all districts to get rid of bad politicians & to elect good candidates instead. Bills & funding to make more grassroots democracy & more participatory democracy (e.g. voters able to vote electronically on issues directly, budget choices and candidates). Lower the threshold for a ballot initiative to 0.1% of the registered voters. Have courts open from 7AM to 11PM to facilitate court action on the part of all New Yorkers, so that all New Yorkers can see court actions completed from start to finish at times that work with their schedules. Of the people, by the people & for the people. 8. Some advocates contend that the position of the Council Speaker has too much power over the progression of legislation. Please use this space to respond to that critique. No more pork. Not for the City Council Speaker. Not for anyone in the government. If people want to donate to charities, or to any group, then they should make that decision for themselves free of the government. Fair taxes also means no more tax loopholes, no more itemized deductions; just one $50,000 income tax deduction per person, an annual cost-of-living increase to the standard deduction & a flat tax on income above $50,000 a year. Committee Chairs should be elected by Committee Members. Every Council Member should be free to introduce their bills directly to the Committee of their choice & each Committee should be vote when (within 365 days time max) received bills will be scheduled. (No more scheduling bills indefinitely.) The City Council should be equal partners with the Mayor in writing, voting on and approving the Citys $70,000,000,000 budget.
