truly a double edged sword. We live in an age of information overload and people do become numb to getting constantly bombarded with updates and information. News travels faster than it ever has before, yet because we know so much, it doesn't seem to affect us the same way it used to. The secret to taming the technology monster is to set limits, to know when to turn it off. The secret is to let technology assist our lives but not run our lives. Setting boundaries has never been as important as it is today. Remember, there is still something very holy and profound about turning the phone off and taking the time to be still, to be quiet, and to connect with God. When was the last time you took a technology Sabbath, or just a few hours away from your smart phone?
Turn, Turn, Turn by Thom Schuyler, Director of College & Young Adults
Our granddaughter started preschool at Woodmont last month. On her first day Lulah's mother did something worth sharing: she took a picture. For many it will simply be a photo of a little girl on her first day of school. For others it may have a more profound meaning. Here is the picture:
Tom Mathias was a hero of mine. Tom was my hero because he knew how to do things. Tom was my hero because he was humble. Tom was my hero because he treated people with respect. Tom was my hero because "he served the Lord with gladness." In this photograph Lulah is sitting on a sturdy concrete bench that the Woodmont Christian Preschool had constructed in his memory. Someone had the intuition to place her on this bench to etch a lasting memory. Amen! Some day in the not-so-distant future our granddaughter will see this picture. Whenever it is, I hope that Lulah peers beyond her own image and sees the words carved in the stone that is supporting her. Go and do the same, little darling All the love, Dutch
Thank you Woodmont congregation and CWF Circles for the healthy snack donations given to support the Girl Scouts at Ross Elementary. This is only part of what Circle 6 collected!

CWF General Meeting Tuesday, October 1st @ 11:00 a.m. in Room 105
Please join us on Tuesday, October 1st for a program led by guest and Woodmont member, Dennis Beck. Dennis participated in the 2012-2013 Leadership Woodmont program. His ministry project is called Tele-Connect. Tele-Connect involves the coordination of a group of volunteers who provide regular connection or care, usually via a friendly voice over the telephone, to church members who are shut-in, convalescing, grieving, lonely, depressed, temporarily immobilized, etc. This is a special group of volunteers who are caring, committed Christians and are good listeners, with warm understanding hearts. Planning meetings will be scheduled soon in the fall. Join the CWF for October's program and to learn more about Tele-Connect. Lunch will follow the meeting. Reservations may be made through your Circle or by calling the church office (297-8563) by noon on this Friday, September 27th. **CWF Board will meet at 10:00 a.m. in Room 107**
If life is getting you down and you need a Christian friend to listen, that is just what Stephen Ministers are trained to do. Please call Kathy Patten (838-4957) to discuss the possibility of this being the help you need.

Sponsor Spotlight
We have 14 amazing youth sponsors signed up to lead the youth group this year. Please join us in thanking our youth sponsors as they give their time and talents to the 6th-12th grade youth in our church. This week, please take some extra time to celebrate and get to know Rob Cochran. Rob and his wife, Ellen, have been members of Woodmont since they were knee high to a tadpole. Rob and Ellen have two daughters, Lindsey an archeologist in Florida and Rachel a graphic artist in New York City, and a son, Taylor, who is a man about town in Chicago. As an architect and general contractor, Rob draws pictures of buildings and then tries to make the buildings look like the pictures. We all pretty much have a bunch of fun. Amen.
Thanks to the Drury family for hosting our first small group night at their house on September 11th. We had 7 youth small groups who discussed deep issues such as "What is a Christian Response in Syria?" and "Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?"

Everyone is welcome!
The Bridge
Baked Goods for The Bridge Service
If there are any groups, or individuals, who love to bake and don't have anyone to bake for we have you covered. The Bridge service offers snacks and coffee for their 15 minute social time prior to the beginning of each service. We are in need of goodies, homemade or not. The favorites are cookies, sweet breads, brownies, doughnuts, chips, salsas, crackers, dips, pretzels and nuts, although don't limit your talents to this list! We all know that people congregate where the food is. What better way to welcome new faces than a homemade sweet or savory. Any donations may be left on the WCC kitchen counter. Please mark them as "The Bridge." Questions, please contact Kim Sheridan at kcsheridan@comcast.net or 500-3401.

Info Meeting for Fall 2014 Mission Awareness Trip to Guatemala - October 2nd Following 5-Star Dinner
Have you ever wanted to go on an international mission awareness trip? Were you inspired by Woodmont's trip with Heart for Africa? The Woodmont Mission Trip Committee is planning a trip to Guatemala in Fall, 2014. If you think you may be interested in experiencing another culture, meeting Woodmont's sponsored friends, and stretching your soul, please plan to attend an introductory meeting immediately following the 5-Star dinner on Wednesday, October 2nd in the Gathering Hall. Emmie Thomas will be sharing experiences from previous trips, and provide info on how to begin to prepare, what to expect, and approximate costs. In the meantime, if you'd like to learn more about our host organization, check out www.cfcausa.org and like CFCA on facebook. This trip is open to all and will follow the high school youth trip that is planned for June, 2014. We look forward to seeing you and sharing info about this unique Woodmont opportunity! If you cannot attend and would like more information, contact Emmie at 587-8149 or edthomas5@comcast.net.
LOCAL MISSION PROJECT OPPORTUNITY... If you are unable to travel on the Morgan Scott Mission Trip (see below), then mark your calendar to serve here at home on Saturday, October 19th, as we offer assistance to Salama Urban Ministries, one of our designated mission outreach recipients. You can learn more about Salama on the Woodmont website under "Urban Ministries" on the Mission & Outreach tab. Salama needs our help in cataloging their stage costumes and props and also with some landscape maintenance. Please contact Tom Patten at william.t.patten@gmail.com to sign up.
