How to train a dog!

People keep dogs for various reasons. Some for company while others just for the pure happiness pets bring with their cuteness and loyalty. But whatever the reason be, one thing that we all want from our pets is to adapt to our environment and our social circle. If you aren't worrying about this at the very beginning of owning a dog then you are perhaps inviting a lifelong discomfort and social seclusion for your dog. But there is nothing to worry about, as dogs are the friendliest and most adaptive pet one can ask for and a little bit of training can make them the best friend you ever wished for. Here are a few important and helpful tips that will help you with how to train your dog: Tip 1: It is very important that you understand the instincts, natural behaviour and ancestry of your dog. Today's domesticated dogs have descended from wolves and therefore many of wolves' instincts are present in your pet. For e.g. Barking at strangers is normal as the rule is to protect the pack against potential threat. Your isn't barking to annoy you, your dog is barking to alert you about the potential threat and to ward off what ever he/she thinks is dangerous for his pack. The idea is to direct their instincts into useful skill through training. Your role is to set achievable limits for him at the same time respecting his instincts. While some instincts are common across all breeds, some are specific to your dog's breed and it is important for you to be aware of these specific traits based on the breed of your dog to help you know them better. Tip 2: Dogs are very social, just like wolves, their ancestors. Therefore they love to live in a pack. Owing to this instinct, dogs like hierarchy in their pack (or family they live with). Its very important for a dog to know its place in the family. Most importantly they need to know the "leader" of the pack (or family). To ascertain yourself as the pack leader, you must gently create that authority. This can be done by making your dog do certain tasks or basic actions such as like "sit" or "rollover" etc. on your command. Some dogs do not submit easily and are stubborn, but that can be because they have been let go easily after a bad behaviour in they past i.e. the pack leader hasn't been consistent enough. Therefore it is very important for a pack leader (in this case you) to maintain that consistency: Punish for a bad behaviour; praise for good. Tip 3: Timing is of utmost importance while training a dog. You cannot explain to a dog what is a good or a bad behaviour. They do not easily understand this concept, unless off course you train them by rewarding or punishing them. But the important part is when you treat them or correct them. If you treat a dog for a good behaviour after 30 seconds of the incident, he wouldn't know why or if he is even being appreciated. You have to set a pattern for such things. Appreciate or disapprove for his behaviour but do it at that very instant. Tip 4: Another most important aspect to training dogs is that you exhibit compassion and a lot of patience. Break your training in to shorter sessions so that you and your dog doesn't get bored. A training session can be 10-15 mins long and you can have many of such sessions throughout the day. Don't lose your temper during these sessions and always end your trainings on a positive note. Appreciate him for his efforts by patting him or treating him. This is because your dog shouldn't get bored of these training sessions. He should look forward to these sessions and this will get him excited towards learning your commands. Another most important aspect of training is that it should be repetitive and consistent. You will have to repeat your commands again and again to your dog; not at once but over a period of time. Also, the commands you set should be used the same way by all your family members to avoid getting your dog confused. You can also read more on the basics of dog training here

Tip 5: Mix a little! The trainings should be repetitive but no one said that they should be in the same pattern. Change your routine by making them do newer tasks or changing the sequence of the activities. This will get them to be more proactive and learn faster and respond to your commands at any given time, even in front of new company. Tip 6: Socialisation and exposing dogs to external environment is of utmost importance to avoid them becoming a social recluse. Dogs should be repeatedly exposed to newer environment. Take them out on trips, to the market etc. This helps them get less anxious and equips them to perform their tasks or for that matter just remain calm in crowded or noisy environment. Tip 7: Punishment is another important aspect of training your dog. Punishment doesn't mean any physical abuse, infact it is discouraged to use any kind of physical punishments with dogs. Best is to not give him any attention after a bad behaviour. Dogs crave for attention and ignoring them can re-instate your point that they have done something wrong. Another way is to hold Dog muzzle or move it gently in one direction and softly yet sternly tell them "No" or "Don't". But most importantly NEVER end your training on a negative note. Remember, as explained earlier, your dog should come to love these sessions so that he is eager to do it again!

Labrador Training: Fun and Easy

If you want to go about Labrador training effectively, you should begin with understanding the breed. Labradors are extremely cute dogs. They are very attentive, very friendly, very lively, and carefree pets. They love playing around and they love it even more when their master pampers them and showers his affection on them. They work very hard to please their master and this makes these dogs even more lovable. Alongside, these dogs are known to be very intelligent. The icing on the cake is that they are considerably easy to train. While some breeds are very hard to train because they are so stubborn, Labs can be trained very easily. On your part, you just have to dedicate yourself to the training. If yours is an adventurous family that loves the outdoors, you will love having a Labrador around because just like you, Labs love the outdoors. They are highly energetic and every time you take them out, they will wag their tails in evident delight. When trained, they make the most wonderful pets but when untrained, they can wreck havoc and never listen to you. They will do what they want and make your life hell. Trained dogs are disciplined and livelier and thus, you should learn Labrador training for the welfare of your dog as well as your family. Since they are active dogs, they need a lot of exercise. One huge mistake that many Lab owners make is not giving them enough exercise. As a result, Labs will become uncontrollable in the house. You have to take your dog outdoors to let him channelize his energy right. Another mistake is not giving enough time. Honestly, if you didnt have the time, what prompted you into adopting a dog in the first place? It is imperative that you spend quality time with your dog. If you cant do that, dont adopt a dog at all to begin with. The third mistake is losing your temper. You HAVE to be patient with your dog or he will never learn. If you lose your temper and yell, he will get scared and subdued. Not cool. These are the basics to keep in mind. Explained below is Labrador training in detail: As aforementioned, training a Lab may not be tough but that doesnt mean it is a breeze. You should know how to go on about it and go through with successfully. Many people fail to train their dogs because they dont know how to start. Others start but leave it in the middle because it is exhausting and they are very impatient. Ignorance and lack of

patience will take you nowhere. Training will take time. You should learn how to do it and give it all the time. Listed here are a few great tips that will help you out for sure: Start with housebreaking No matter what breed you choose to buy, you have to start off with housebreaking. Otherwise, he will make your home his potty station and poop all over the place. Right from the time he enters your house, he should be taught that his bathroom is not inside the Dog house but outside. Especially in the case of a Lab, you should start right away! Here are the two main steps for potty training: 1. Your dog will show certain signs that he needs to do his business such as sniffing the same spot over and over, and circling. If you notice such signs, you should take him out immediately. You should be extra careful about this during the first nine weeks because this is the time duration in which he will learn where his bathroom is. It might be hard work for you in the start because you will have to take him out once in an hour and after every activity such as eating, sleeping, playing, walking, and so on. 2. When he listens to you and goes potty where he is supposed to, praise him as much as you can. Pet him and smile at him, say words like Good Boy or Good Doggie so that he knows he did the right thing. If you praise him, he will be more likely to go to the same spot the next time he has to pee or poop. Be very consistent You have to be consistent for a very long time if you want your dog to learn. Also, you cant change your commands every now and then. If it is NO for you, all your family members should stick to NO and not other variations such as DONT or something else in your mother tongue. You have to keep repeating the same commands for your dog to learn. Also make sure your Dog training sessions are not strenuous. They should be fun and engaging for your dog because dogs tend to get distracted very soon. Be extremely patient Along with being consistent, you should be patient. It is not about teaching him something for a couple of days and letting go after that. Labs are a lot of fun but at some point even these lovable dogs can get onto your nerves. Dont ever punish him or beat him. EVER! Teach him with your tone. If he does something wrong, look at him straight and say NO very firmly. When he does what you want him to, praise him, and give him a treat. Be positive Instead of being bad to him when he does wrong, be good to him when he does right. A positive approach is a better way of teaching your dog. At the same time, being nice to your dog will help you strengthen your bond. He will love you even more and be willing to do whatever you ask him to. Dogs that are punished usually become scared, subdued, and lonely. Some dogs even suffer with serious depression. You dont want to do that now, do you? Thus, you should adopt a positive approach for Labrador training and that will help you a lot! Follow these tips and your Lab will be the BEST dog in the world.

Things to know about vaccinations

So you gave your dog his/ her vaccination? Do you know what was given. Best is to do a little research on the brand used. Some vaccines can be given every 2 years, some every 3 years, some annually. Then you get the 3 in 1, 5 in 1, 7 in 1 vaccines, which work well but remember which age group these vaccines are meant for. If you give a adult vaccine for a puppy less than 3 months old, the vaccine won't be so effective as it should be because of mother's natural immunity been already passed down to the puppy via the milk. Some vets may decide to give vaccines together to save time. This is not good too as vaccines can clash with each other if given together and most probably you would get a infective vaccine. Only vaccines modified or made compaitible should be given the same day. Puppy vaccination is the most important. Your vet should ideally give vaccines made for puppy. These vaccines such as PUPPY DP has the word puppy written on the bile. These vaccines are made so that they do not clash with the mother's immunity that had already been passed down. Vaccines takes about 2 weeks to take effect. Some breed such as Rottweilers and dobermanns may need additional parvo vaccines as they are naturally weak for this virus. Rabies is given annually for your legal reasons. Vaccinations are 95% effective. It is also very important that vaccines are stored properly. If there is a power cut, vaccines could get spoilt especially during transport.
