PBAEAST REGION
Continued from Page One
"This is one of the most exciting initiatives for the PBA Regional program ever and shows the PBA's commitment to developing great players on the regional level, said PBA Commissioner Tom Clark. It made the races for the RPI spots in each region even more compelling and the resulting Xtra Frame and TV exposure for the regional program will shed more light on one of the most important foundations of the PBA." Bowling fans can watch the exclusive live start-tofinish coverage of each RPI event on Xtra Frame on Saturdays and Sundays. A full-year subscription is $64.99 and will include not only the RPI events, but the hundreds of hours of coverage from WSOB-V from Las Vegas, qualifying and match play rounds for many of the PBAs 2014 tournaments and more. To sign up, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame logo. iPhone, iPad and Android users can also download an Xtra Frame app to their mobile devices to catch all the action. Visit the Apple App store and search for PBA Xtra Frame. Android users need to search Google Play or, using a mobile device Play Store, search PBA or Xtra Frame. During the World Series at South Point Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center in early November, the top three RPI champions, based upon their finishing position in the PBA World Championship standings, will compete in a one-game RPI Finals shootout event that will air as part of the PBA Chameleon Championships on ESPN. The winner of the RPI Finals will earn a berth in the 2014 PBA Tournament of Champions. Too often bowling has been depicted as an activity that has overcome a sordid past. As a youngster I sort of reluctantly accepted the oft repeated tales of drinking and gambling and assorted other ills as the main lure of the game, and not the thrill of rolling a ball and knocking down more pins than the other bowlers. Early in my writing career I met some people who were involved with the early days of the sport and others who were related to or knew some of the pioneers of the game. One day a fellow sportswriter handed me a package, told me that an older woman had dropped it off for me and if I didn't want it to just throw it away. It was a scrapbook of bowling articles that appeared from 1900 to 1905. I was surprised, fascinated, and proud, and eagerly devoured every
word. It was all positive, maybe by design, maybe because that's the way it was. It had many a piece about women's bowling, informative, educational, and illustrative of a larger role women played than ever imagined. Serving on various Hall of Fame and other committees I had the opportunity to peruse long ago publications and articles about the sport plus much of the research done by bowling scholars such as Al Matzelle, Bruce Pluckhahn and Herm Weiskopf. Sure there was some gambling, drinking, plenty of needling, lip action, equipment tampering and all the rest that goes with the building of a sport, but there also was the touch of class given by builders, engineers, women, churches, athletic and social clubs and people from every walk of life.

Marcus Huart
Marcus Huart, 12 years-old and bowling since he was 5, bowled his personal best 179 game this past summer while rolling at Eagle Rock Lanes. Marcus represents what the sport of bowling needs to reinforce its future. He has been instrumental in promoting bowling by encouraging friends to bowl in their spare time. He also enjoys other sports like swimming but bowling is definitely his favorite because it encourages, fun times, friendly competitiveness if they choose and just a great way to enjoy a Saturday morning or an afternoon with friends and families.
