When You Arrive at the Hospital: Go DIRECTLY to the emergency room, which is BUILDING 3. The emergency room is marked with a small sign that says Emergency Room or . Once inside, check in with the Nurse Triage desk. If the nurse on duty determines that your childs case is non-life threatening, you may be asked to take a number or gua hao, in which case you would make a payment to be seen by a doctor. 3 Payment Methods: You can pay with a Chinese debit card (China Unionpay system), a Chinese credit card (not a foreign credit card), or with cash. Contrary to what you may think, the Childrens Hospital of Shanghai will not delay treatment for your child if you cannot demonstrate in advance that you have the ability to pay for services in full (e.g., have Chinese debit card, or Chinese credit card, or your insurance is accepted by the hospital). That means that it does NOT have the medical doctors to deal with trauma emergencies and does not have a pediatric surgeon who can operate on children, if needed. (Trauma emergencies include anything that deals with bleeding or requires the child to undergo surgery, such as a serious fall, broken bones, major accidents, loss of consciousness, head trauma, seizures, etc.) If the child has a trauma emergency and you take him to Shanghai United Family Hospital, they will send you to Childrens Hospital of Shanghai (and you will have wasted valuable time).
