January 1st saw us up at the stroke of midnight for the watch night service, then at 11 a.m. a baptizing service after a special breakfast at 7 a.m. In the afternoon we got ready to reopen our reading room in Madrapakkam, which now has three rooms instead of one. We had crepe paper decorations, and welcome signs all over, as well as a new white-washing job. This reading room is bringing in many, many people and they, oat of sheer boredom, many times, re -.d the Bible and related books
plus New Testament stories from Tamil. There are many Christian articles in the

bookstore, and they are beginning to get a glimpse of whab Christianity could mean to thera. We must constantly remember that these are people (I could say men, as

no women come) from the strictest Hinduism who have no concept of Christianity,
no idea of Christ, and know nothing of the saving love of Jesus. One of our hardest problems is how to reach into the very heart of these people, and show them the love that God had for them, and bring them along the Christian road.

At the opening we had peanuts for the children and pencils for the adults (thanks, Ralph), and played Tamil and Telugu records of the Life and Death of Jesus, It was a real success. Wearily, but happily at 8 p.m. that night we entertained a

Our hospital has been recognized by the Mission to lepers and we now have a prepared place for 16 in-patients. With this recognization and the Christian Medical Association, we now have the highest recommendation possible to do medical
work,

We have been thrilled at the lovely parcels, cards, letters that have come to us this year. It is true that if we but trust the Lord, he will open the windows of heaven, and we shall receive many blessings.

WHAT IS LEPROSY?
To many leprosy is a disease going around in the guise of a man, but it is noc so. Ic is simply a man with a curable disease who needs help. Leprosy is one of the oldest dis
eases known to mankind and was

prominent in the early days of the Old Testament about 4,000 years ago. It was so important 3.500 years ago in the days of Mosss that God gave special provision for those with leprosy. They had to shout. "Un clean, unclean." It is thought the d-sease started in the Nile Valley and spread across Asia Minor and into the Far East. It is very pre valent in India, China, Malaya, and Central Africa, but almost non-exist- j
ant in the colder countries. In all the
