DESCRIPTION Function
The fuel gas system supplies the necessary fuel for the gas turbine. The flow rate for the EV-burners depends on the power output required and other operational conditions. If the supplied fuel gas is too cold it will be preheated. The system is integrated into the overall plant protection system, i.e.; the trip valve immediately interrupts the fuel supply to the burners whenever an emergency trip is initiated.

1.2

Principle of Operation
General The air for control air system MBX36 (valves of the ignition gas unit and the auxiliary air for the ignition torches) is supplied by control air unit MBX35. The fuel gas is supplied through fuel gas supply MBP01 via fuel gas flow meter MBP01 CF001. Main shut-off valve MBP31 AA001 isolates the fuel gas system MBP31 from the gas supply system MBP01. Main shut-off valve MBP31 AA001 and relief valve MBP31 AA002 are each equipped with both an AC motor and a manual drive. Trip shut-off valve MBP40 AA001, gas control valves MBP41 AA002, MBP42 AA002 and MBP43 AA002, gas relief valve MBP51 AA001 and ignition gas unit MBP60 AA001 are grouped together in the control valve block, (see also Ignition Duel System HTCT 319 611). The positions of control valves MBP41 AA002, MBP42 AA002 and MBP43 AA002 and with it the gas flow in the three supply lines to the EV-burners are set by electro-hydraulic servomotors MBP41 AU001, MBP42 AU001 and MBP43 AU001. Trip valve MBP40 AA001, relief valve MBP51 AA001 are equipped with servomotors. The control oil in system MBX40 operates the servomotors. Strainer MBP31 AT001 installed downstream from the gas relief valve prevents larger foreign objects from damaging the control equipment. Strainers MBP41 AT100, MBP42 AT100 and MBP43 AT100, installed before the gas distribution, prevents foreign objects from entering into the EVburners and clogging it. The fuel gas supplied to the burners through fuel gas control premix 1/3, MBP42, is measured by fuel gas flow meter MBP42 CF004.

1.3.2

Standstill During standstill, main shut-off valve MBP31 AA001, trip valve MBP40 AA001, control valves MBP41 AA002, MBP42 AA002 and MBP43 AA002 are closed. Relief valves MBP31 AA002 and MBP51 AA001 are open. There is no pressure in the lines between the main shut-off valve and the burners MBM11 AV101 to AV118.

1.3.3

Start-Up (Ignition Torches supplied with Fuel Gas) Once "Automatic Start, Gas" has been selected start-up is initiated. Relief valves MBP31 AA002 and MBP51 AA001 close, main shut-off valve MBP31 AA001 opens. Gas flows as far as trip valve MBP40 AA001, which is still closed. The feedback messages, "Main shut-off valve open and relief valves closed" enable continuation of the starting program. When gas ignition speed is reached ignition gas unit MBP60 AA001 (not shown in diagram HTCT 319 610) is put into operation and ignition torches MBM11 AV001 and AV002 are activated. Relief valve MBP60 AA030 closes. Then shut-off valves MBP60 AA010 and AA020 open, the ignition gas, which is supplied by fuel gas system MBP40, flows through ignition gas system MBP60 and MBQ30 into the combustor. Simultaneously, shut-off valve MBX36 AA050 opens, the ignition air supplied by control air system MBX37 flows through ignition air system MBX36 and into the combustor. There the ignition fuel is electrically lit. When the temperature at only one ignition torch exceeds the preset temperature within a preset time, the start-up program sequence is continued. The main ignition sequence is unblocked. Control valve MBP43 AA001 opens to the ignition position (ignition gas flow). After a preset time delay trip valve MBP40 AA001 opens. When it leaves the closed position, the three flame monitors MBM11 CR001, CR002 and CR003 are unblocked. The pilot gas required for main ignition flows through the fuel gas system (pilot) MBP43 and the 18 EV burners into the combustor. There it is ignited by the flames of ignition torches MBM11 AV001 and AV002. When at least two of the three monitors detect the flame within a preset time delay after unblocking, the enable signal is then initiated and the start-up program continues. Ignition gas system MBP60 and ignition air is shut-off. Shut-off valve MBX36 AA050 closes. The valves inside ignition gas unit MBP60 AA001 switch back to their "at rest" position, first shut-off valves MBP60 AA010 and AA020 close and then relief valve MBP60 AA030 opens to relief the line between the shutoff valves over the roof. Control valve MBP43 AA002 closes to minimum ignition gas flow. When the combustion has reached a stable condition, control valve MBP43 AA002 continues to open again. The fuel flow increases and the gas turboset is brought up to nominal speed, synchronization and subsequent loading will occur.

1.3.4

Operation After synchronization control valve MBP43 AA002 continues to open until a preset percentage of nominal load (premix begin load) is reached. In this lower part load range the EV-burners are supplied with fuel gas (pilot) control MBP43, only. When the lower preset percentage of nominal load (premix begin load) is reached, fuel gas control MBP41 (2/3) and MBP42 (1/3) start to supply fuel gas. Control valves MBP41 AA002 and MBP42 AA002 start to open. The pilot gas flow (control valve MBP43 AA002) is kept at about constant burner above the flammability limit for pilot operation. The premix for the 1/3 and 2/3 premix burner groups are about the same. The control valves are controlled in such a way, that the sum of the gas supplied maintains a constant loading gradient of the gas turboset. When the higher preset percentage of nominal load (premix load) is reached, the changeover to pure premix operation is initiated. Control valve MBP43 AA002 (pilot gas) starts to close and control valves MBP41 AA002 and MBP42 AA002 open. After completion of changeover (control valve MBP43 AA003 is closed) the control valves MBP41 AA001 and MBP42 AA001 open according to the operation program and the load required. To get optimized combustion, emissions and pulsations the ratio of fuel gas flow between systems MBP41 and MBP42 (different burner for the 1/3 and 2/3 group) is set during commissioning taking into account the plant specific conditions. The load controller increases fuel flow until TAT (Temperature After Turbine) reaches TATmax. Then TAT remains constant, the load is increased by opening the VIGV (Variable Inlet Guides Vanes) and by increasing fuel gas flow until TIT (Turbine Inlet Temperature) reaches TITpart load. The load controller controls the fuel flow and the VIGV open depending on the load demand. Then TIT remains constant, the VIGV continues to open and the fuel gas flow increases until VIGVopen position is reached. TAT decreases due to the increasing pressure ratio. Then the fuel gas flow is increased until TIT reaches TITbase load. Since the air flow remains constant (VIGV are open) TAT increases also.

HTCT 690 546 Var. 52 B

en

GT8C2

High ambient temperature: the VIGV starts to open at a lower load due to the TAT limit.

F
1.3.5

Extreme high ambient temperature: The TIT limit for part load or base load will not be reached. Low ambient temperature: the VIGV starts to open at a higher load and the limit for TITpart load is reached sooner. If the load reaches GTmaximum power the gas turboset will operate at the highest possible part load point according to the operation concept.

Part-load operation Part load operation is any operation status between minimum load and base load. During part load operation, the gas turboset operates the same as during loading or deloading: The VIGV and control valves open or close, changeover premix / pilot operation will take place at the preset TAT and TIT.

1.3.6

Shut-Down The operator selects GT Stop and initiates with it the shutdown process. The set point for load is automatically set to zero (idle). The load is removed by slowly closing control valves MBP41 AA001 and MBP42 AA001 according to the normal deloading gradient. The VIGV starts to close at the set point and the changeover to pilot combustion is initiated at the set points. Control valve MBP43 AA002 opens and control valves MBP41 AA002 and MBP42 AA002 continue to close. Throughout the change-over, the control valves are controlled in such a way, that the sum of the gas supplied maintains a constant deloading gradient of the gas turboset. After deloading, the machine is disconnected from the grid. In order to reduce thermal stress in the turbine blading and the hot sections, the gas turboset is idling for a preset time (idle cooling time). To allow a quick synchronization and loading during idling generator excitation remains activated. After idling the speed set point is automatically set to 0%, excitation is shut-off. Trip valve MBP40 AA001 and control valve MBP43 AA002 close., . Relief valve MBP51 AA001 opens, thereby relieving the pressure in the line between the trip valve and the control valves. Then main shut-off valve MBP31 AA001 and relief valve MBP31 AA002 open, thereby relieving the pressure in the line between the main shut-off valve and the trip valve. The rotor speed drops rapidly. When rotor barring release speed is reached rotor barring starts.

1.3.7

Load Shedding During a load shedding the load is removed according to the load shedding gradient by closing control valves MBP41 AA001 and MBP42 AA001. The VIGV starts to close at the set point. Changeover to pilot combustion is initiated at the set points. Control valve MBP43 AA002 opens, control valves MBP41 AA002 and MBP42 AA002 continue to close. Throughout the changeover, the control valves are controlled in such a way, that the sum of the gas supplied maintains a constant deloading gradient of the gas turboset. After deloading, the machine is disconnected from the grid and remains idling. Load/ Grid Rejection Load rejection (generator breaker opens), grid rejection (main high voltage breaker opens). After opening of a breaker, control valves MBP41 AA002 and MBP42 AA002 close and, simultaneously control valve MBP43 AA002 for pilot combustion opens. The premix flames ignite the pilot flames. Then control valve MBP41 AA002 and MBP42 AA002 close, the premix flames are shut-off. Closing control valve MBP43 AA002 until idling is reached reduces pilot gas flow. The VIGV close until normal idle operation is achieved. Trip valve MBP40 AA001, and gas shut-off valve MBP31 AA001 remain open. The turboset is held at its rated speed (idling) by the control system. At idle the gas turboset can be synchronized and loaded again. Trip When an emergency trip is initiated, trip valve MBP40 AA001, control valves MBP41 AA002, MBP42 AA002 and MBP43 AA002 close immediately (flames off). Relief valve MBP51 AA001 opens and relieves the system. Continuation of operation is the same as during a normal shutdown, without idling, (refer to 1.3.5 "Shut-Down").
