ROBO-SMILE as Audio Visual Stimulator for Decreasing Anxiety in Pediatry Dental Treatment

Target Audience: The audience of this research were pediatry patient, in dental hospital faculty of dental medicine Surabaya, with range of age 5-10th. Because anxiety is the major problem in treatment patient of this age. Abstract:

Introduction and Rationale Over recent decades, the daily clinical practice in dentistry has its benefit from mayor advances in technique, technologies and materials, as well as in infection control procedures. Nowdays, public awarness of oral health has improved. Despite to dental treatments is a problem sufferend by many patients world wide. Dental treatment anxiety and subsequent avoidance of dental care and deterioration of oral health pose a significant problem for the dental profession. In attempt to elucidate prevalence of anxious dental patients, based on ADA survey from 121 persons in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States showed a result that 66 percent of responden attributed to anxiety in dental treatment (Bare,2007). Evidence data in China also showed that prevalence of dental anxiety among 5-10 years old was about 20,6 percent. Anxiety is an emotional state in individuals to defend themselves, this term of defense expressed with anxiety which influence in dental treatment. Anxiety can decreasing cooperation of patient, increasing pain sensation during dental treatment, and may decreasing success in dental treatment. Objective: The research of Robo Smile stimulation has a major objective to observed the

anxiety in children patient during dental treatment. This program was aimed to decrease anxiety of children patient in dental treatment, increasing patient cooperation, and dental care through an effective method. Method:
The research was done on 40 children and divided into 2 groups, one control group and one treated group of Robo-smile stimulation during dental treatment. Robo-smile is a robot doll that different with dolls or robot in general, the media is equipped with audio and visual stimuli capabilities and devoted to reduce anxiety during dental treatment. Audio stimuli in robo-smile is able to provide sound stimuli like relaxe music so it can give comfortable feeling during dental care. A cute character in Robo-smile that known by children is able to provide visual stimuli for Tell-show-do technique and can be influence in children perspective as their dolls friend during dental treatment . Parameter to determine this research was using blood pressure and Frankls index (index emotion of anxiety in dental patient). Then the data was analyze with independent t-test.

Result:
The positive result of the use of Robo Smile stimulation showed with a normal or decreased blood pressure and positive emotion according to Frankls index.

Evaluation: Based on the analysis of the sample groups pre and post-test index values, there was a significant improvement that shown in the result of the test values. It can be assume that the patient anxiety were decreased as the rate of blood pressure showed with normal or slightly decreased and the Frankls index also presented a positive result. Based on physiology aspect, it has known that anxiety related closely to the steroid metabolism that influence with blood pressure, heart rate, and emotion. From both factors, ie: blood pressure and anxiety factor, it can be evaluated that Robo-smile has positive influenced to reduce anxiety during dental treatment. Conclusion: Robo-smile is an effective media for decreasing anxiety in dental treatment. Keywords: anxiety, audio visual stimulator, dental treatment
