Applied Theatre It is a term used for performance practices that fall outside mainstream theatre performance and take place "in non-traditional settings and/or with marginalized communities."[2] They are most often in spaces "that are not usually defined as theatre buildings, with participants who may or may not be skilled in theatre arts and to audiences who have a vested interest in the issue taken up by the performance or are members of the community addressed by the performance."[3]

"Traditional mainstream theatre is most often centered in the interpretation of a pre-written script, applied theatre, in contrast, involves both the generation and the interpretation of a theatre piece that in performance may or may not be scripted in the traditional manner."[4]

Applied theatre is not drama therapy, although there are commonalities between both areas. Geese Theatre Company Applied theatre, is a term used to describe a type of performance, which is conducted the mainstream theatre performance circuit, instead performances are conducted in non-traditional settings with marginalized communities, often in spaces which mainstream theatre performances would not take place. They often take place with partakers who could or could not be as skilled as conventional theatre performers to an audience who have a particular interest on the issue which is displayed during the performance. Applied theatre is described as dramatic activity that primarily exists outside conventional mainstream theatre institutions, which are specifically intended to benefit individuals , communities and societies..theatre practises are diverse as, for example drama education and theatre in education, theatre in health education, theatre development, theatre in prisons, community theatre, heritage theatre and reminiscence theatre. (Taken from, applied drama, the gift of theatre, by Helen Nicholson). I have chosen to base my essay on the Geese theatre company, a theatre company based in the midlands, originally founded in the USA in 1980 by British director John Bergman, I have chosen to focus on the UK branch of this theatre company which was established in 1987 by former US company member Clark Baim (website) . The geese theatre company has a global status for their work with offenders and young people in danger, work with professionals who work with their targeted client groups and have been so ever since they were established, and this is done within the criminal justice system through interactive drama, and conducting workshops, staff training, and consultation. The company is formed of a collective of numerous actors and group workers who construct these procedures, since the beginning of the establishment, he company has worked in 150 custodial institutions and with 42 probation areas, and within this period they have managed to work with over 150,000 offenders and 30,000 individuals.

This company undergoes several projects, as part of their applied theatre experience , such as

issue based performances groupwork inputs into a range of probation, prison, secure hospital and youth offending programmes workshops and residencies staff training events performances for Criminal Justice conferences

The company believes that drama is a powerful and effective vehicle for inviting individuals to examine their own behaviour and as a catalyst for promoting personal development and change.
