1.a) Find the values of a and b for which the equations

x + ay + z = 3, x + 2y + 2z = b, x + 5y + 3z = 9

are consistent. When will these equations have a unique solution?

b) Investigate for what values of η, µ the simultaneous equations.

x + y + z = 6, x + 2y + 3z = 10, x + 2y + λz = µ

have (i) no solution (ii) a unique solution (iii) an infinite number of solutions.

2.a) If λ is an eigen value of A then prove that the eigen value of B = a 0A2 + a1A + a2I

4x + 2y + z + 3ω = 0, 6x + 3y + 4z + 7ω = 0, 2x + y + ω = 0

b) Show that the system of equations.

2x1 – 2x2 + x3 = λx1

each case.

2.a) Define eigen value and eigen vector of a matrix A. Show that trace of A equals to
