Hysteria

This is a neurological condition involving psychological syndromes caused by mental

depression and mental distress due to the stagnation of qi.

Differential diagnosis: Patients with stagnation of liver qi may suffer from mental
depression, emotional distress, frequent sighing, distension and pain in chest and flank,
sense of obstruction in throat and difficulty in swallowing, white and greasy tongue
coating, and wiry and rolling pulse. Patients with mental distress due to worry may
suffer from mental confusion and unsteadiness, crying, pale tongue
with white coating, and wiry and thready pulse. And patients with deficiency of Yin
and excessive Yang may suffer from vertigo, insomnia, annoyance or emission of
semen, soreness of waist, irregular menstruation, red tongue, and wiry, thready and
rapid pulse. Neurasthenia and menopausal syndrome recognized by modem medicine
may be treated by the following methods.

Treatment:

Foot massage: The massage may be applied to head (1), pituitary gland (4), spleen
(34), stomach (15), liver (18), kidney (22), heart (33) and lung (14) refleeting areas
(Fig. 44).

Foot acupuncture:

1) Meridianal acupoints: Bilateral Xingjian (LR 2) or Taichong (LR 3) are used for
liver qi stagnation by a lifting, thrusting and twisting stimulation for 10 times, with
5-minute intervals between, and the needles retained for 20 minutes.
2) Extra acupoints: At Neizhiyin (EX-F 20) and Nuxi (EX-F 6) acupoints, a strong
reducing technique is applied and the needles are retained for 20 minutes.
3) Foot acupoints: At Epilepsy (FA-M 4) and Anmian (FA-P 2) acupoints, a moderate
twisting stimulation is applied and the needles are retained for 20 minutes, and Liver
(FA-P 9) acupoint is used for liver qi stagnation.
