Who can hear this And falls not down and worships? In my fancy Fair-haired Calliope, on her ivory lute But something short of this sung Ceres praises The motion of the spheres are out of time, Her musical notes but heard. So the Roman Emperor Domitian praises the singing of Domitia Longina, his future wife, in Massingers play The Roman Actor. We cant promise to deter the motion of the spheres or excel the performance skill of Calliope. However we can bring you music from a time when, poets and playwrights tell us, singers were better than the muses; lutenists were all like Orpheus; and composers aspired to stop, or at least wound time.

FOR THE LUTES AND VOICES THE ROSARY CYCLE AT ST. MICHAELS COLLEGE
As Ensemble-in-Residence at St. Michaels College in the University of Toronto, The Musicians In Ordinary present Christopher Verrette playing the entire cycle of Bibers Rosary Sonatas for violin and continuo, along with contemporary solo motets. Heinrich Biber worked for the Archbishop of Salzburg. At some time in the 1670s, he composed a rhapsodic sonata on each of the fteen Mysteries that the faithful meditate upon while praying the Rosary. Each sonata has the violin in a special, non-standard tuning so as to match the sonority of the violin to the affect of the Mystery and to facilitate a virtuosic chordal style. Between the sonatas Hallie Fishel sings a 17th century motet on the appropriate theme. Philip Fournier plays organ; John Edwards plays theorbo. 8pm, October 11, 2013 The Glorious Mysteries 8pm, January 24, 2014 The Joyful Mysteries 8pm, March 14, 2014 The Sorrowful Mysteries

Posterity now regards John Dowland one of the greatest English songwriters ever. We think he is the very best, but you should come and judge for yourself. Dowland was

born some time in 1563 and we present our favourite John Dowland songs and lute solos to compete with the anniversary of the second best English songwriter, Benjamin Britten. Hallie Fishel, soprano; John Edwards, Renaissance lute.

8pm, February 15, 2014 Musicke of Sundrie Sorts Songs for Voice and Violins and Lute by Byrd and others A high-prizd noise t to make a mans Ear Glow and ll his brains full of frisks is how the late 17th century music writer and grumpy fogey Thomas Mace characterized the violin. But earlier the stately viola da gamba and the frisky violin family had been largely interchangeable. Hallie Fishel sings and John Edwards plays lute in the consort song repertoire with an ensemble led by Christopher Verrette. The violin band, the main dance band of the Elizabethans and Jacobeans, also play pavans, almans and galliards.

Publisher Francesco Marcolini tells the readers of a book of Intabolatura di liuto that, the suavity of sound that is born of the lute, by making itself heard in the soul, robs the senses of those that hear it. John Edwards plays Italian lute solos by the contemporaries of Titian, da Vinci, Michaelangelo and Caravaggio. Music by Spinacino, dances by Dalza, arrangements of Josquins choral music by Capirola, Fantasias by Francesco da Milano and music by Galileos father, Vincenzo Galilei.
