Mount Mary to host author R. Clifton Spargo Oct. 8

R. Clifton Spargo, a novelist and cultural critic, will speak on writing about social justice issues on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Mount Mary University, Stiemke Hall, 2900 N. Menomonee River Parkway. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Universitys Master of Arts in English Program and is part of the Writers on Writing series. Spargo writes The HI/LO, a blog for The Huffington Post. His work has appeared in numerous publications including The Chicago Tribune, Commonweal and The Yale Review. Spargo also teaches The Stories We Tell, a healing-focused writing workshop for survivors of sexual violence and trafficking. In conjunction with the awardwinning non-profit The Voices and Faces Project, the workshop has been held for Milwaukee area survivors at Mount Mary. Spargo is a graduate of the doctoral program in literature at Yale University and the Iowa Writers Workshop. Space is limited and reservations are recommended. Today's column is about oral cancer. One of our wonderful patients was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer and is undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation and we send our prayers for a speedy and full recovery! It is important to remind our readership about one of the many important reasons to see their dentist regularly. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation there will be 42,000 Americans that receive a diagnosis of oral or pharyngeal cancer this year and this will result in 8000 deaths. Oral cancer is a group of cancers that involve the head and neck and are found to be squamous cell carcinoma in 90% of cases. Squamous cell carcinomas have a much greater chance of spreading (or metastasizing) in comparison to basal cell carcinomas. The lesion is often asymptomatic which makes oral cancer screenings imperative. It most commonly appears as a reddish skin plaque or ulcer that grows slowly. A cancer cell is one that doesn't turn off and keeps multiplying as a result of a genetic mutation to genes. These cells cannot repair themselves. Where can oral cancer appear in my mouth? Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tongue. It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gums , the roof of one's mouth, or the lips. They may arise from many types of tissue in the mouth including salivary glands and lymph tissue. What should I look for? Keep your eye out for a skin lesion, lump, or ulcer that does not go away for around 2 weeks. This may be a small lesion on the tongue, lip, or other mouth areas. It is usually pale colored, but potentially could be dark or discolored. An early warning sign may be a white patch called a "leukoplakia" or a red patch known as an "erythroplakia" on the soft tissues of the mouth. These lesions are usually painless initially, however, it may develop a burning sensation or pain when the tumor is advanced. Other symptoms to look for are tongue problems, hard time swallowing, and mouth sores. Pain may be a late symptom but most often oral cancers are painless. How can a dentist tell if a lesion is cancerous or not? A dentist can identify a potentially cancerous lesion. However, a biopsy is the only way to know for sure. Benign and malignant lesions can look identical to the eye. A noninvasive brush biopsy can be performed to rule out the presence of cancerous cells. The only definitive method for determining if cancerous or precancerous cells are present is through biopsy. The cells will then undergo microscopic evaluation to determine if they are indeed cancerous. What will happen if a lesion in my mouth is determined to be cancerous? Often times, all that is necessary is for a small sugical

incision to be made to remove the lesion from the area in question. Radiation with or without chemotherapy can also be used in conjunction depending on the severity, stage, and size of the lesion. What puts you at a higher risk for developing cancer? People that are over 50 that drink heavily and smoke are at higher risk for oral cancer. Other risk factors are people that have been diagnosed with HPV or Human Papilloma Virus; which is a sexually transmitted disease which Michael Douglas recently associated with his throat cancer. Patients with poor diets or having had a higher exposure to radiation may also be at higher risk. We hope you will go to your dentist or come to us for your complimentary oral cancer screening. March of Dimes announces three new board members

The March of Dimes Wisconsin Chapter is pleased to announce three new members of the State Chapter Board of Directors. John H. Wink is a shareholder in the law office of Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren. Wink works in the firm's Banking and Finance and Business Law practices. He serves a wide variety of clients, including financial institutions and asset-based lenders, as well as privately held and public companies in all aspects of financing transactions. Prior to law school, Wink studied accounting and passed the CPA exam. Wink received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also earned his law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School. Krisstina Ebner is a Senior Associate at the law firm of Godfrey & Kahn in the Corporate practice group, located in the Milwaukee office. Her team focuses on mergers, acquisitions and other business combinations for companies of all sizes and in various industries. Ebner received her Bachelor of Business Administration degree summa cum laude in Finance with a Global Business minor, as well as her Bachelor of Arts summa cum laude in Spanish, from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Rummage-A-Rama! season kick-off at Wisconsin State Fair Park

After its usual six month summer hiatus, Rummage-ARama! opens its six-show season this weekend, Oct. 5-6 at the State Fair Park Wisconsin Products Pavilion. The new show hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The event boasts over 20 new sellers this weekend, in addition to many regular favorites, with plenty of vintage and antique items and seasonal dcor. Over 100 sellers plan to participate. Rummage-A-Rama! formed a team of four brand ambassadors this season who will be hitting the show floor, on the hunt for the most unique items at Rummage-A-Rama! Follow @RummageARama or "like" it on Facebook to see what they find. Rummage-A-Rama! now offers a Season Pass for said "loyal customers." Each $10 pass is good for five entries to the show, or purchase three passes for $25. Each Season Pass comes with a free eco-friendly Rummage-A-Rama! tote bag. Bike Through Time set for Oct. 12

Registration is now open for Bike Through Time, a guided bicycle tour through Whitnall Park and the surrounding Root River Parkway set for Saturday, Oct. 12, 9 to 11 a.m. The leisurely-paced bike ride presented by Wehr Nature Center offers frequent stops to discover ancient natural features in the landscape, historic landmarks and wildlife Among the features of the landscape are a 400-million-year-old bedrock outcropping with fossilized remains of Paleozoic sea life; Goat Mountain, created by Ice-Age glaciers; and Mangan Woods, with its pre-settlement burr oaks. A stop at Trimborn Farm, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, will give participants the opportunity to walk the grounds, learning about the lime operations and kilns used in the manufacture of Cream City bricks. Structures from the 1850s, used in agriculture, dairying and horse boarding, will also be explored. Another historic landmark on the ride is the Civilian Conservation Corps building at Boerner Botanical Gardens. The building was originally used in the 1930s as a dormitory for the young men who worked to create bridges, dams, and buildings in the park. The Root River Parkway will be used for the return trip to Wehr. Early park planners intentionally left the parkway undeveloped as a means of flood control. This area along the Root River also provides wildlife habitat and, therefore, great wildlife viewing. All participants are required to provide their own bicycles, helmets, and drinking water. The ride is recommended for adults and children age 10 and up. The tour is limited to the first 30 registrants. Preregistration is required by Thursday, Oct. 10. New Catholic Schools Walk to celebrate success set for Nov. 2

A new two-mile walkSoles for Catholic Educationwill be held in on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee. The event will begin at 10 a.m. The walk is being held to celebrate the success of Catholic schools in southeastern Wisconsin while raising money to support tuition assistance at each school, said Archbishop Jerome Listecki, who will be present at the walk in his red high-tops. "This walk was created to raise visibility for the archdiocese's 110 Catholic schools while celebrating the many benefits of a Catholic education, including academic rigor, Christ-centered faith formation and, overall, a holistic approach to education which includes mind, body and spirit, Listecki said.
