Welcome to the Hypnosis Motivation Institute (HMI),
celebrating our 45th year as the country's premier College
and Clinic of Hypnotherapy.
HMI was founded in 1968 by Dr. J ohn Kappas. Dr. Kappas
literally defined the profession of Hypnotherapy in 1973, when
he wrote and defined the profession of a "Hypnotherapist" in
the Federal Dictionary of Occupational Titles. That definition
remains in force and unchanged today.
HMI has earned the distinction of being America's first
hypnotherapy training school to become nationally accredited,
by an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department
of Education, in Washington, D.C.
HMI's Hypnotherapy Clinic is home to over 50 Certified Hypnotherapists. HMI estimates that it has provided

Volume 2-1 Hypnotic Modalities

Alcohol and drug abuse is perhaps the most pervasive problem in society today. Most us have been

Volume 7-4 Habit Control
When the average person thinks of Hypnosis they think of two areas; quitting smoking and losing
weight. Many Hypnotherapists make a comfortable living from these two areas alone.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Therapeutic Imagery with Instructor, Cheryl O'Neil. Cheryl is
Certified as a Therapeutic Imagery Trainer and has 10+years of Hypnotherapy practice experience.
This is an introductory class where you begin the discovery of Imagery in relationship to Hypnosis.
You will learn and understand about the differences and connectedness of Visualization and Imagery,
explore the many uses of Imagery, and learn how to create Imagery constructs for use in Hypnotherapeutic
practice. This class is Part 1 of a two part series.
Volume 8-5 Imagery 2
This lesson is Part 2 of the Imagery Series and takes you further with Imagery, as we explore the
mind/body connection and the uses of Imagery in health.
Cheryl also explores images and symbols from the subconscious and demonstrates how the Imagery
processes can provide important messages for discovery, for insight, and also, are rich material from
which to build suggestions.
Under Dr. Kappas' guidance, the students conduct the clinical interview then with the client out of the
room, discuss the interview and choose a therapeutic strategy. Then the client is brought back in and
presented with the therapeutic plan, given a suggestibility test, hypnotized and given the first session's
suggestions. All the clinical case presentations provide the student with a unique and insightful look
into the expertise and artful style of Dr. J ohn Kappas.
During these presentations Dr. Kappas illustrates how to integrate the use of personality profiles,
handwriting analysis, clinical common denominators, dream therapy and conversion induction into the hypnotherapy session.

Presented by Elaine Perliss
In the first of this six part series, Senior Staff Instructor, Elaine Perliss, will introduce you to the
wonderful world of Handwriting Analysis. She will explore how understanding and analysis of the traits
in their clients writing can provide the Hypnotherapist with a valuable tool for their practice.
In this first lesson, Elaine covers the basic foundations of Handwriting Analysis including the basic
rules and guidelines. In addition this class will give you an in-depth coverage of several traits including
margins, page and letter zones, baseline slant, letter slant and pressure in writing.
In the second of six classes, Elaine Perliss begins with a review of the traits covered in the first class. Then, building on
this foundation, she covers several additional traits including the spacing between letters, words and lines, the size of the
handwriting, the significance of loops, importance of capitals and finishing with the most important capital letter of all;
the capital I.
Also in this class Elaine gives a brief history of how we came to utilize the style of writing that is used and taught in schools
as well as the different variations of form that we currently see.

Elaine Perliss combines the brilliance of Kappasinian Hypnotherapy with the benefits of Handwriting Analysis in this fourth
class in the six-part series. In this class, youll discover the writers Sexuality and Suggestibility. In addition, youll
learn how the writer learns, as well as the significance of the speed of the writers writing.
As with all other classes, Elaine reviews the materials covered in previous classes and, when applicable, ties the new traits
with the older lessons to complete the learning process for each trait.
In class 5 of 6 in this series, Elaine Perliss adds to the now solid foundation of traits covered in the previous four classes.
Youll see a review along with coverage of several new traits. As Elaine explains in the class, the new traits covered are, in
many cases, a combination of traits covered in previous classes. She shows how when certain traits are combined, they will
give the Handwriting Analyst a greater in-depth picture of the writers subconscious motivation.
Covered in this class are signatures, dishonesty, frustration in Sexuality (behavior) and frustration in personalities (inborn
tendencies). Also, Ms. Perliss gives you a detailed overview of Professional Handwriting Analysis Profiles.
In this last of the six-part series, Elaine provides an overview of the traits covered in previous classes. Then she ties together
several last traits into the mix including neuroses, fearful and aggressive personalities, physical disorders, paranoia and
finally suicide ideation. The new traits covered in this class also represent a combination of traits covered in previous classes
that will show how certain traits when combined will give the Handwriting Analyst a greater in-depth picture of the writers
subconscious motivation.
With the completion of these six classes, students are well-equipped to provide accurate analyses of their clients
handwriting samples.
In this, the third class, Elaine Perliss begins with an in depth review of the traits covered in the first two classes. Moving
along, Ms. Perliss introduces several new traits, beginning with the most important lower case letter of all; the t. Youll
see how this letter is vital to understanding the writers self esteem and confidence. In addition, she covers the lower case
i and d, ovals and the beginning, ending and connecting strokes.
In each class, Elaine demonstrates how the traits learned in previous classes are connected to the new traits learned in each
new class, aiding in the overall understanding of Handwriting Analysis.

Your Personal HMI Tutor
Every Distance Education student receives their own private Tutor to assist them through their educational
experience. HMI Tutors are graduates of HMIs Certificate program, who are also Certified Union Hypnotherapists
and maintain private Hypnotherapy practices in HMIs clinic.
Each HMI Distance Education student has access to a portrait and biography of their private HMI Tutor to help
foster the close personal relationship that can develop between the student and Tutor.
Your private HMI Tutors education and clinical experience translates to personal attention and assistance for your
assimilation of course material and feedback on your practical and clinical experiences.
Depending on which Advanced Course payment plan you choose, included in your Advanced Course Training
you will receive a number of private tutorial appointments with your personal HMI Tutor. During these tutorials,
youre free to ask any questions you have regarding your understanding of the course materials or your practice
with others.
In addition, your Tutor can provide tips and tools you can use to set up your own private Hypnotherapy practice.
These tutorials can be accumulated to apply toward the supervised experience requirement of both Union
Certification and/or State Registration.
For example, if you spend three and one-half hours preparing for your clients session, see two clients for one
hour each, and then discuss those experiences with your Tutor/Clinical Supervisor for one-half hour, you will have
accumulated six hours of supervised experience.

Awards Union Certification
Education Awards vs. Union Certification
It is important to note that your HMI educational Award, the Diploma in Hypnotherapy and your Hypnotherapists
Union Certification are not one and the same and are in fact each awarded from a different organization.
Your Diploma in Hypnotherapy is awarded from your school, HMI. Certification as a Hypnotherapist is awarded
from an independent organization, The Hypnotherapists Union Hypnotherapists Union Local 472, AFL-CIO, OPEIU.
Earning your Diploma from HMI is what qualifies you to apply for Certification with the Hypnotherapists Union.
Union Certification is not a requirement of HMI nor is it a State Law. Union Certification is an option. Graduates
choose to qualify themselves in the eyes of consumers and other professionals by certifying they have met the
standards of a notable independent agency. This certification
would be in addition to your HMI School Diploma.
HMI Diploma in Hypnotherapy
Students who successfully complete both the Foundations Course
and HMI's Advanced Training program are awarded HMIs
Diploma in Hypnotherapy. This educational award fulfills the
requirements for Certification as "Master Hypnotist" with the
Hypnotherapists Union Local 472, should the student so choose.
Certification as a Hypnotherapist
HMI students are eligible for Certification as a "Hypnotherapist"
with the Hypnotherapists Union Local 472 when they have
completed HMI's Advanced Training, received their Diploma in
Hypnotherapy from HMI and in addition, have completed 200
hours of supervised experience under an authorized supervisor
as defined by the Hypnotherapists Union.
HMI Tutors are qualified as authorized supervisors and can
supervise hours for HMI Advanced Students during their
enrollment period.
HMI tutors supervise students through their Q and A and
during their phone tutorials by discussing the work they are
doing with clients. These hours are documented on the Clinical
Hours Log (PDF).
