NIGHT of August 30, 1998, I found my-
self around fascinating people at the lobby
of the Cultural Center. I had just witnessed
the presentation ceremonies of the 40th
Ramón Magsaysay Awards. I just learned
a
that the Nobel Prize of Asia has been
awarded to names such as The Dalai
Lama, Mother Teresa and Akira Kurosawa
among others; great or small, I look up to
all of them, but no Magsaysay Awardee has
inspired and affected me much, that she
changed the course of the history of a coun-
try and changed my destiny forever. And
she’s my kababayan too.
Then, I saw her, up at the staircase. She
wasn’t wearing a yellow dress though, like
she usually does when I see her on TV. I

the lottery thrice on Internet.
And that excludes the seven
times I hit the jackpot last month.
So, how come I can’t toss tycoon

My e-mail box is crammed
with felicitation letters for strik-

that’s a hefty P24.1 million. Can
anybody tell me how I squeezed
into the company of the moneyed
few, like the “penniless” Imelda
Marcos?
Over 300,000 e-mail addresses
were churned through a com-

I forget now.
But that’s nothing compared

IF we are interested in keeping
our humanity, or at least our san-
ity, it may be good to be reminded
about the need for us to develop,
keep and strengthen our simplic-
ity and spiritual childhood. This
integral part of Christian asceti-

With our neck-breaking pace
of development, with its unavoid-
able dust cloud of complications,
we need to realize more deeply
that the way to go is not by being
quixotic, tilting at windmills and
grappling with phantoms, but by

The temptation to be quixotic
can be strong, since we always
feel we can handle things by our-
selves. Our sense of freedom and
responsibility often blind us to

Simplicity is the way to objec-
tivity, and to all the other values
connected with objectivity. It
keeps us in touch with reality, the
one meant for us. We have to say
this, because as human beings,
we are capable of creating paral-
lel realities. That’s our abiding
problem.
Of course, our subjective
world will always vary from per-
son to person. But at least this
variety can still be linked to an
objective reality. Our predica-
ment is that we can have a sub-
jective perception of things that
has nothing to do with the objec-
tive reality anymore. It can be
propped up merely by a system
of rationalizations.
In fact, even at this juncture,
some of us can already question
what this objective reality really
is. This is the likely question of
those who believe more in them-
selves than in God, of those who
rely on reason while neglecting
the faith.

‘The deformers’
choosing our planet. One would
be to help us see its beauty and
rich resources being squandered
by these machines. Another
would be our role — yup, yours
and mine — to take care of this
lovely green globe and if we have
to, to be ready to protect it. Third,
that it takes machines to teach
humans how to act — oh, the ro-
bots acted a whole lot better than
the cued-in automatic rendering
of Megan Fox and female com-
panions with their obviously use-
less silicon accessories — like de-
cent human beings.
In reality, the robots were do-
ing what they were “pro-
grammed” to do. The good ones
were out to save the day and ob-
viously the bad ones were out to
ruin it. Parallel to these two op-
posing forces, however, were the
persons who gave a very bad pic-
ture of human life and relation-

stakes look like peanuts. “You are

At this rate, don’t you think I

if all he had were good inten-
tions,” former UK prime minis-
ter Margaret Tatcher once said.
“He had money as well.”
By the time Loteria de la Pri-
mitiva in Madrid and Holland’s
Paragon Promo tell of sums, wait-
ing for my go-signal, I’m wary.
What’s the catch? “A fool and his
money are soon parted.”
All the letters are phrased
identically, down to the gram-
matical errors. Only the amounts
vary. Keep it confidential, they

For those who have faith, they
can manage to escape the grip of
their rational and sentimental
subjectivity to go into an objec-
tive world outside of themselves.
Without faith, one opens himself
to the possibility of being invin-
cibly imprisoned in his own
world.
Simplicity helps us accept and
live the faith. It’s what makes us
children who accept things first,
who allow ourselves to be guided
and taught, before asking ques-
tions, not out of unbelief but
rather for greater understanding.
Remember what our Lord said
about the kingdom of heaven. He
went as far as to say that it is for
little children precisely because
of their simplicity: “Suffer the
little children, and forbid them
not to come to me. For the king-
dom of heaven is for such.” (Mt
19,14)
We need to devise an interior
mechanism, more spiritual than
material, to keep ourselves like
children even as we grow in
worldly knowledge and skills, and
prone to thinking that we can al-

Carrots for your health’s sake
“THE art of medicine consists of
amusing the patient while Na-
ture cures the disease,” Voltaire
wrote a long, long time ago. To-
day, as someone adds, “The medi-
cine of the future will no longer
be remedial; it will be preventive;
not based on drugs but on the
best diet for health.”
One of those that should be a
part of a healthful diet is the car-
rot, known in the science world
as Daucus carota. It was well-
known to the ancients and is
mentioned by Greek and Latin
writers. British playwright Will-
iam Shakespeare highly regarded
the carrot in one of his plays, The
Merry Wives of Windsor.
Medicinally, the carrot was
used as a diuretic, stimulant, in
the treatment of dropsy, flatu-
lence, chronic coughs, dysentery,
windy colic, chronic renal dis-
eases and a host of other uses.
Old writers wrote of a carrot
poultice which had been found to
mitigate the pain of cancerous
ulcers.
Eating the carrot is also good
for allergies, anemia, rheuma-
tism and a tonic for the nervous
system. In addition, it is good for
diarrhea, constipation (very high
in fiber), intestinal inflammation,
and cleansing the blood (a liver
tonic). Traditionally, the carrot is
recommended to weak, sickly or
rickety children, to convalescents
or pregnant women, its anti-ane-
mic properties having been fa-
mous for a long time. Applied
with honey, the leaves cleanse
running sores or ulcers.
Tea made with the seeds can
promote the onset of menstrua-
tion. It is effective on skin prob-
lems including broken veins/cap-
illaries, burns, creeping impetigo,
wrinkles and sun damage. Car-
rots also help in stimulating milk
flow during lactation. What most
people don’t know is that the car-
rot is also effective against round-
worms and dandruff. Pureed car-
rots are good for babies with di-
arrhea, providing essential nutri-

ventors who are trying to build
prototypes with their limited
budgets? It’s already hard for
them to raise the money to build
these prototypes. Let us not make
it even harder for them to put
into form the ideas in their
minds.
And why not subsidize the
costs of patenting these inven-
tions worldwide? No single Fili-
pino inventor has the resources
to patent his invention in key glo-
bal markets. The only way they
could do this is if they get some
government support.
There could be more investors
here if the “investment” highway
is faster. The first step is to set
up “Business One Stop Shops” at
the local government unit (LGU)
level.
An idea came up in my show,
to put up “investment clubs” for
young start-up professionals.
This idea is a perfect match for a
new law that gives tax breaks to
young investors who want to buy
from the stock exchange.
Another idea came up, to of-
fer entry level stock options to
anyone who is just starting to buy
stocks, young or old. The idea is
to come up with a short list of
blue chip stocks that are known

Carrots are also supposed to
help break wind and remove
stitches in the side. Chewing a
carrot immediately after food
kills all the harmful germs in the
mouth. It cleans the teeth, re-
moves the food particles lodged
in the crevices and prevents
bleeding of the gums and tooth
decay. Carrot soup is supposed to
relieve diarrhea.
Everyone knows carrots im-
prove vision, as it provides the
highest vitamin A content of all
vegetables. There was this urban
legend about British gunners in
World War II, who were able to
shoot down German planes in the
dark because of their superior
eyesight as a result of consuming
carrots. (Actually, the legend
arose during the Battle of Brit-
ain and was an attempt to cover
up the discovery and use of ra-
dar technologies.)
According to a brochure dis-
seminated by the Laguna-based
Philippine Council for Agricul-
ture, Forestry and Natural Re-
sources Research and Develop-
ment , bright orange carrots con-
tain two important phytochemi-
cals: carotenoids and flavonoids,
which are natural bioactive ingre-
dients.
“These phytochemicals work
with nutrients and dietary fiber
to protect people against dis-
eases,” the PCARRD brochure
explains. “Beta-carotene, a mem-
ber of the carotenoids family, pro-
tects the body by decreasing the
risk of heart disease, stroke,
blindness, and certain types of
cancers.
The carrot gets its character-
istic orange color from B-caro-
tene, which on consumption by
people is metabolized into vita-
min A. The deeper the orange
color in carrots, the more beta-
carotene content. However, some
experts warn that massive over
consumption of carrot can cause
hypercarotenemia, a condition in

ting diodes (LEDs) as compo-
nents for new solar powered
products. The product potential
for this component is unlimited
and as it is now Chinese inven-
tors are ahead of the game.

are “off the grid” should consider
buying solar lamps for students
who have no electricity at home.
The budget for this could be
taken from the local Educational
Support Fund (ESF). This would
also enable the families of the stu-
dents to save about 250 pesos per
month for kerosene.
Are electric cooperatives en-
gaged only in the selling of elec-
tric power? Could it be part of
their mandate to provide lighting
to off grid areas? If they could

pagbagsak ng mga eroplano sa loob ng nakaraang tatlong
taon.
Ito ay sa kabila ng pag-unlad ng aviation industry
kung saan ay higit na mas maraming piloto ang kailangan
sa mga bansa sa Timog Asya at Gitnang Silangan na
nakaranas ng pag-unlad ng ekonomiya sa mga nagdaang
taon.
Ayon kay Bokal Christian Natividad, ang pagrerenda
sa mga flying school ay hindi nangangahulugan na ayaw
nila ang pananatili at operasyon nito sa Bulacan.
Ang mga flying school sa Bulacan ay karaniwang
matatagpuan sa bayan ng Plaridel kung saan ay
matatagpuan din ang isang paliparan ng eroplano, ang
Plaridel Airstrip.

Nikko Materials Philippines. Call me
Jon of Laguna. I’m one of the employ-
ees of Nikko Materials Philippines.
Last October 3, 2005, we (285 rank
and file employee) had our strike at
our plant in Biñan, Laguna by enclos-
ing ourselves in the plant as protest
to the refusal of the Management to
negotiate on our CBA. And on the 8th
of the same month we ended our
strike because of the back-to-work
order issued by Mr. Imson of the De-
partment of Labor after a series of
negotiations. We have a return-to-
work order but the inability of Labor
to issue the writ of execution, 106
ended up terminated. Earlier last
month the said officer of labor issued
the CBA awarding P85 per day and
P400 additional to our rice subsidy,
evident that our argument/request to
the management is attainable. We’re
not just terminated, we are also ha-
rassed by the employer by not giving
the benefits that we are entitled. The
Labor Department seemed deaf and
blinded. Almost seven months of pick-
eting and rallying at their Depart-
ment, but until today the Labor De-
partment opted to release the Execu-
tion of back-to-work. I’m inquiring as
to what steps could we make to end
our problem? Help us please! Thank

response: first of all, if there is a back
to work order coming from the De-
partment of Labor and Employment,
I will advice you strongly to return
back to work. This is not only a means
of showing your good faith on your
fight with your management; it is also
the right and legal thing to do, for
there is an order directing you to re-
turn to work. This is a government
of laws, not of men, we are won’t to
hear every now and then. This only
means that we should follow the or-
ders of duly-constituted authorities,
even if we think the orders are wrong.
The right way of contesting the or-
der which we perceive to be wrong is

Dahil limang taon na hindi ako naka-
kadalaw sa kanyang puntod ay mina-
rapat kong sumaglit noong Martes ng
hapon dahil malapit naman ito sa BF
Homes.
Ang libingan niya ay katapat
lamang ng kay Senador Ninoy
Aquino at kayang-kayang lakarin.
Ngunit anong gulat ko nang pag-
dating ko doon ay tumambad sa akin
ang isa pang lapida sa katabing
puntod ng kapatid ko. Patay na din
pala ang asawa niya na balak ko pa
namang bisitahin sa Pacita Complex,
San Pedro, Laguna upang mapag-
usapan ang tungkol sa lupa namin sa

Nakalagay sa lapida na 2007 pa siya
binawian ng buhay at sa buong pana-
to seek redress from the courts by fil-
ing the appropriate cases. If you have
good grounds in support of your be-
lief that the order is wrong, the courts
will give you relief. If, on the other
hand, you have no good grounds, then
you can be sure the courts will rule
accordingly. This kind of a problem
cannot be solved by the simple expe-
dient of the aggrieved party holding
rallies and pickets. No government
agency will act only on the basis of
rallies and pickets. You must file a
case, and let the courts rule on the
matter. Secondly, on the issue of the
106 employees having been termi-
nated, I am suggesting the filing of
illegal dismissal cases on their behalf,
against your employer. Again, resort
to the courts, in this case the National
Labor Relations Commission, is the
only proper thing to do, to contest a
decision of the management to ter-
minate the employment of its employ-
ees and workers.

niya, tuwing naaalala niya ang

political family — Ninoy Aquino.
Incidentally, the Champion of the
Masses, then President Ramón
Magsaysay, was their godfather.
Years after Magsaysay, a dic-
tator emerged on the throne at
Malacañang — Ferdinand E.
Marcos. Senator Ninoy Aquino
became his foremost opponent.
Marcos had him imprisoned
when he declared Martial Law.
Cory became, in Ninoy’s words,
“sole support, source of comfort
and wellspring of hope” for him
when he was in prison for seven
years and seven months. On her
shoulder fell the pain of a wife of
a political detainee.
It was not only the Aquinos
who suffered. All the Filipinos
were denied the freedom of ex-
pression. Their right to be free
was taken away from them and
they lived in fear of the dictator-
ship, for anyone who dared chal-
lenge it would be taken away to
be tortured or sometimes be
killed.
Cory and their children joined
Ninoy for three happy years in
Boston. But in spite of that, he
decided to sacrifice. He returned
to the Philippines to talk Marcos
into dismantling his dictatorship.
He was the only hope …
Upon arrival, Ninoy was shot
— dead!
With Ninoy’s death, the dicta-
torship thought that it was all
over. It was their greatest mis-
take. With Ninoy’s death, a sleep-
ing nation was awakened to the
abuses of the regime. They
mourned his death and throngs
marched in his funeral. And they
made his widow, Cory Aquino,
their rallying symbol.
When Ninoy’s life ended,
Cory’s fight began.
A million signed up for the
little housewife to run for presi-
dent against the strongman
Marcos. She accepted the call: A
fight between David and Goliath!
Marcos questioned her qualifica-
tions, “She’s only a woman …
What is she going to do when she
becomes president?” Cory an-
swered, “I admit that I have had
no experience in cheating, steal-
ing, lying or assassinating politi-
cal opponents.”
The people supported her all
the way in the elections, but
Marcos cheated and had himself
re-elected. “Tama na, sobra na,
palitan na!” Defense Minister
Juan Ponce Enrile, and General
Fidel Ramos broke away from the
regime on February 22, 1986.
Marcos ordered their arrest but
it couldn’t be effected! Why not?
The camps where the defectors
were, which was situated along
EDSA highway, became sur-
rounded by two million people in
the name of the housewife in yel-
low. With the sound of prayers
and the shouts of “Coree! Coree!”
the people blocked the menacing
tanks of the regime. The turn-
around of events now known in
history as the People Power Revo-
lution: Cory was installed as
president after four days of peace-
ful protest by the people and
Marcos fled to Hawaii never to
return again!
Yes! Cory Aquino was the
lightning rod of the first success-
ful revolution without a drop of
blood shed. People Power was the
contribution of the Filipinos to
the world. Yes! We inspired the
downfall of the Berlin Wall, the
destruction of the Eastern Eu-
rope Communist Bloc, and the
dissolution of the Soviet Union,
all carried out by the people with-
out violence. Cory emerged as an
international symbol of democ-
racy.
The RM Awards cited that
when “she stepped down in favor
of an elected successor … she had
restored her country’s demo-
cratic institutions and its good
name in the community of na-
tions … She governed with integ-
rity and the devout intentions to
do always what was best for the
country and its people.”
The citation added, “No Asian
leader of our time can claim as
much.”
Many considered her presi-
dency as a failure for, in their
words, “little had changed with
their lives.” And that People
Power was inutile.
I just turned two when People
Power happened, too young to re-
member. But I could never accept
that Cory and People Power were
a failure. I believe she was God’s
simple instrument in pinning
down a tyrant and in bringing
back democracy for all of us. Be-
cause of that, she had changed
the lives of millions of people,
even of the next generation, and
the world was inspired with that.
On a more personal level, she
made way for me not to experi-
ence the hardships of a cruel re-
gime, and for me to freely express
myself as a writer (without sup-
pression and censorship), that
sole reason is enough for me to
be inspired to protect and fight
for this democracy even in simple
ways.
Today, at 67, she’s still active
in safeguarding democracy from
those who would attempt to take
it. Because she has the credibil-
ity and moral authority, people
still listen to her or seek her ad-
vice. I believe that as long as Cory
is alive, and we will carry on her
fight, we would remain free!
She showed the world that if
we would just be united as a
people, we accomplish even the
impossible. In her simplicity, she
proved that even the simplest of
us can accomplish great things.
Ninoy described her, “Loom-
ing from the battle, her courage
will never fade.” With her cour-
age, we were never the same
again …
Cory paved the way in order
for me to live free! She also made
me feel proud to be Filipino.
I love Cory Aquino!

Bulakenyong nakatira sa loob ng flight zone ng mga train-
ing plane.
“Kadalasan ay sa mga bukid o mga open area nagka-
crash yung mga eroplano nila, pero paano kung sa mga
bahay bumagsak at madamay ’yung mga nakatira,” aniya
at sinabing noong 2004 ay isang training plane ang
bumagsak sa isang hardware store sa Plaridel na naging
sanhi ng pagkamatay ng dalawang pulis na kasapi ng Spe-
cial Action Force (SAF).
Inayunan naman ni Bise Gob. Wilhelmino Alvarado
ang punto ni Natividad. Kailangang matiyak ang
kaligtasan ng mga Bulakenyo mula sa mga eroplanong
bumabagsak, ani Bise Gob. Alvarado.
Sinabi pa ni Alvarado na dapat ding matiyak kung
ligtas gamitin ang mga eroplanong ginagamit ng mga
estudyanteng piloto.
Ayon kay Col. Jose Saplan, hepe ng Aircraft Accident
Investigation Board (AAIB), patuloy ang kanilang
imbestigasyon sa mga pagbaksak ng mga eroplano sa
Bulacan.
Ipinaliwanag ni Colonel Saplan na sa kasalukuyan ay
dumarami ang mga estudyanteng piloto sa Plaridel na
nagmula sa ibayong dagat dahil sa pag-unlad ng aviation
industry na bunga ng pag-unlad ng mga bansang India,
Qatar at iba pang bansa sa South Asia at Middle East.
Ang nasabing pag-unlad ay nangangahulugan ng
pagtaas ng pangangailangan sa mga piloto. Inihalimbawa
ni Saplan ang bansang Qatar na bumili ng 30 pam-
pasaherong eroplano sa nagdaang dalawang taon.
“Iyan ang isa sa mga dahilan kung bakit biglang tralia at Amerika bukod pa sa nakakaranas ng dis-
dumami ang mga foreign student pilot sa Pilipinas kriminasyon sa dalawang bansa ang mga estudyanteng
partikular na sa Plaridel,” ani Saplan. piloto mula sa Timog Asya at Gitnang Silangan.

Deformer Act 2: On the essence of education and learn-
ing. Sam has just started college. University life becomes
an arena overflowing with sexual allusions: a green-
minded professor who makes use of sexually blatant ex-
pressions in class; student interactions that convey that
college is where males and female hormones arbitrarily
explode.
Deformer Act 3: On human relations. In numerous
occasions the film projects that guys only have sex in their
minds (i.e., through their conversations, dreams and de-
sires). Thus, there are a number of totally unnecessary
scenes — this is where the robot of Megan Fox and other
extra ladies come in — that stimulate one’s imagination
and desires regarding sex and portraying women as mere
sexual objects.
These deforming examples attack the innate dignity
in every person created by God in His image and like-
ness. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches,
“Being in the image of God the human individual pos-
sesses the dignity of a person, who is not just something,
but someone. He is capable of self-knowledge, of self-pos-
session and of freely giving himself and entering into com-
munion with other persons.” (no. 357)
The Catechism further on says: “Man gains such dig-
nity when, ridding himself of all slavery to the passions, he
presses forward to his goal by freely choosing what is good
and, by his diligence and skill, effectively secures for him-
self the means suited to this end.” (no. 2339) But the movie,
instead of contributing to the transformation of man into
a more perfect image intended by God tries to reprogram
man’s true integrity through the trivialization of sex and
the stimulation of his base passions.
If it weren’t for these “deforming acts”, the film would
have been a good and decent sequel. Unfortunately, di-
rectors and producers had another image of man in mind:
It’s a man’s movie so let’s boost his “macho robot image”
plus some fuel of “hyper-testosterone plug-ins” that will
make one come out of it really powered up as an unstop-
pable sex machine …”
[WARNING: SPOILER] The movie ends with the
Decepticons “retreating” for now to oil their wounds. The
Autobots have saved the day again and will continue to
guard — without pay — the earth. But who’s watching
over our kids? And to think that this film’s rated PG-13!
This will be a continuing battle for parents and guard-
ians.

plicity. We cannot take this duty for
granted, because the logic of our flesh
and the logic of the world tend to
complicate us.
