Math Vocabulary: More/ Less/ Equal to

Instructor: Kate Verner Grade Level: Kindergarten Duration: 30 minutes

Lesson Name: More than/ Less than game/ Equal to game Lesson Objectives: Students will roll the number cube and connect the number on the number cube to the quantity of shapes to pick up with 100% accuracy in less than 30 seconds. Given a partner, students will compare the quantity of each others pattern blocks stating greater than, less than, or equal to with 95% accuracy. Common Core State Standards: K.CC. 4. Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality K.CC.6 Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies. Assessment Plan (informal assessment) : Monitoring game to see if students are demonstrating knowledge of the math standards. Academic Language: More than Less than Equal to Lesson Materials: 2 Number Cubes Geometric building shapes (pattern blocks) Mat to separate each students pattern blocks Lesson Summary: I will go over the math vocabulary with students. Next I will use interactive modeling to show students how to play the game I have designed to practice the vocabulary. Students will play the game in pairs, practicing the math vocabulary.

Instructional Process 1. Introduce the game during Math meeting through interactive modeling. (see rules below) 2. Monitor game during centers 3. Remind students to compare quantities after they have each selected the pieces and shapes. 4. Help students if needed.

Rationales for Teaching Actions 1. Teaching the rules of the game 2. Making sure that the purpose of the game continues to be educational meeting the common core standards K.CC.4 and K.CC.6 3. Reminding students of the last step to practice the vocabulary words more than, less than, and equal to. 4. Giving assistance to students if needed.

Reflection on Teaching

Extended Activities: Students can name the shapes that they select after they count them. Compare shapes, see how many triangles or other shape each person has seeing how has more or less. Sort shapes into categories by shape or color, then compare. Steps to the game 1. Student 1 will roll the number cube and count the number on the dice. 2. Student 1 will pick out the same quantity of shapes as the number on the dice. 3. Student 2 will repeat the same process 4. The students will compare who has more, less, or equal (Example: 5 is less than 7 so Student 1 has less than student 2) 5. Repeat the game for as long as the center continues.
