SENSE PERCEPTION

A way of knowing.

Muna Ahmed Grade 12

What is sense perception?

Perception by or based on stimulation of the senses.

As humans, we perceive what is around us by using our senses. Our five human senses help us understand what our surroundings are and see the different activities that are happening around us. Sense perception allows us to interact with the world.

Importance of Sense Perception

We are born with our senses, therefore we are allowed to use our senses long before we start using our other methods of knowing, before we are old enough to start reasoning, and way before we start controlling our emotions and learning our language. We use our senses naturally, without even thinking at times, this is why we should learn how to utilize these senses to help us learn.

OUR FIVE SENSES

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Sight : eyes. Hearing : ears. Taste : Taste buds. Touch : hands. Smell : Nose.

SIGHT
IS THE VISUAL PERCEPTION. Visual perception is the ability to interpret the surrounding environment by processing information that is contained in visible light. Our eyes are one of the most important factors that help us learn and gain knowledge, a lot of us are visual learners, which means that SEEING helps a lot in learning.

HEARING
IS THE AUDITORY PERCEPTION. Auditory perception is the ability to perceive sound by detecting vibrations using an organ, the ear. Hearing empowers us and enriches our lives. Hearing enables us to socialise, work, interact, communicate and even relax. Good hearing also helps to keep us safe, warning us of potential danger or alerting us to someone elses distress. Our hearing provides us with an enormous source of information, some of it obvious and some we barely notice but when combined, this information forms the bridge between the world and how we interact with it.

TASTE
IS THE GUSTATORY PERCEPTION. Humans perceive taste through sensory organs called taste buds concentrated on the top of the tongue. One reason that taste sensations are important is that they prepare our bodies for digesting food. Taste helps us learn our preferences more, by tasting different flavors, we tend to understand what we like and what we dislike.

TOUCH
IS THE TACTUAL PERCEPTION. Touch helps us feel what is around us, and predict how it looks and what its texture is. The sense of touching sends our brain signals of pain or heat, which can contribute into our health by knowing what is hurting and curing it. Also, touching helps us in our social lives, by having different body languages and hand gestures people can understand our feelings and inner thoughts.

SMELL
IS THE OLFACTORY PERCEPTION. Smell is an important sense as it can alert us to danger like gas leak, fire or rotten food but also is closely linked to parts of the brain that process emotion and memory. Unpleasant and bad smells actually send pain signals to the brain to warn us of possible danger. Smell is vital for survival of most humans and animals as it enables them to track food and water and as well as communicate.

The previous slides explained the different human senses we use in our daily lives. All 5 senses are linked to one another and help each other out. Each sense is responsible for a certain role. In conclusion, we have learned the importance of sense perception in our learning and daily lives, humans cannot live to the fullest if not for the five senses that assist us.
